Abstract

I Infection Prevention and Control Nurse (IPCN) has an essential role in preventing and controlling infections in hospitals. IPCN's role has been developed to optimize the prevention and monitoring of infection in hospitals. Some countries such as Korea, the United Kingdom, Ireland have developed graduate program nurse control specialists by obtained needs for particular science that can deal with hospital conditions, specifically related to the prevention of infection and care of infectious patients. This case study aims to identify and analyze IPCN's optimization of IPCN in conducting infection prevention and control in a government hospital in Jakarta, which is also a national referral center hospital. Data collection was done by observing the daily activity of the IPCN, reviewing IPCN's role by focus group discussion with nine out of ten IPCNs, and interviewing the nurse committees and director of nursing. The results obtained indicate that the implementation of the functions and roles of IPCN cannot be carried out maximally. This is because, in addition to serving as IPCN, IPCN was also involved in the activities carried out by the unit as well as the implementation of wide surveillance hospitals by the Hospital Infection Control Committee (HICC). It is recommended to optimize the implementation of the functions and roles of the IPCN through the establishment of IPCN competency guidelines aimed at improving IPCN competency standards now and in the future, as well as guiding the determination of IPCN's duties and responsibilities to be more maximal in preventing and controlling infections. Abstract

Hand Hygiene (HH) is the most effective step to reduce the transmission rate of patient care infections. Attempting to increase HH is carried out by using technology and handwashing compliance as an indicator of its success. The study aimed to describe information on technological developments in HH monitoring in hospitals and their effects on the level of compliance of health workers, especially nurses, in conducting HH. This study uses the literature review method, using the Science Direct, Scopus, Ebsco, and PROQUEST databases. The author uses keywords: "electronic hand hygiene monitoring" and "technology of hand hygiene monitoring" in searching the database. The development of technology in HH monitoring has increased in the last decade. The main goal of its development is to reduce the bias that occurs with control by a human. There are three kinds of HH technology, such as wireless tracking technology, auditing video, and chemical fluid sensor. The use of electronic HH monitoring can increase HH compliance, both assessed in terms of quality and quantity. In contrast, until now, there are no tools that can detect HH compliance in all HH WHO's moments. In its development, the successful use of these tools also experienced obstacles

Abstract

The determinant of nursing ethics practice is not identified yet. This problem affects the ethical behavior of nurses in performing nursing care. According to that, it was influencing satisfaction and patient well-being. This study aims to identify the determinants of the ethical principles application in nursing. Descriptive, correlation, cross-sectional design was applied, through simple random sampling to 120 nurses. Data collecting used questionnaires, with univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyzes. Determinants of nursing ethic application principle were job characteristics, nurses knowledge related to nursing ethics, supervision by supervisor, relationship with colleagues, awards, the role of head nurse, and tenure (p = <0,001-0,049). The most dominant variable was job characteristics (p <0,001). These factors need an attention by hospital manager to keep evaluating the other factors in order to improve the application of ethical principles in nursing.

Abstract

Background: The increase in COVID-19 cases in Indonesia has resulted in changes in the hospital workflow, including the staffing process and scheduling, especially in the isolation units. Nurse managers are working hard in the scheduling system to ensure high-quality care is provided with the best human resources. Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences of nurse managers in managing staff nurses’ work schedules during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used in this study. Eleven nurse managers from three COVID-19 referral hospitals were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using online semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis, and data were presented using a thematic tree. Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist was used as a reporting guideline of the study. Results: Four themes were developed: (i) Nurse shortage, (ii) Strategically looking for ways to fulfill the workforce, (iii) Change of shift schedule, and (iv) Expecting guidance from superiors and compliance from staff. Conclusion: The lack of nurse staff is a problem during a pandemic. Thus, managing personnel effectively, mobilizing and rotating, and recruiting volunteers are strategies to fulfill the workforce during the pandemic. Using a sedentary shift pattern and sufficient holidays could prevent nurses from falling ill and increase compliance with scheduling. In addition, a staffing calculation formula is needed, and top nursing managers are suggested to provide guidance or direction to the head nurses to reduce confusion in managing the work schedule during the pandemic.
