Abstract

The shift from traditional agriculture to monoculture plantations has significantly altered land tenure, land use, and livelihoods among the Dayak Hibun Community in villages of West Kalimantan. This study aims to examine the impacts of oil palm development on land relations, cultural values, and livelihoods within Indigenous communities embedded in the palm oil commodity supply chain.  This study uses a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative methods such as field observations, transect, interviews, and FGDs. Snowball sampling was employed to identify key informants with deep contextual knowledge. A survey of 31 Dayak Hibun households provided quantitative data on livelihood activities, land access, and resource relations, which  strengthened the qualitative analysis. The unit of analysis was the household of Dayak Hibun farmers in Gunam Village located in the lowland area of Sanggau district. Findings indicate that households that own less than 2 hectares of oil palm farms predominantly experience survival conditions, some of which engage in consolidation intensification, and diversification. In contrast, households that own more than 2 hectares of land tend to pursue consolidation diversification, intensification, extensification, and accumulation. Cultural values serve as a collective strength across all social strata particularly for survival household condition with landholdings of less than two hectares.

Abstract

The decreasing interest of young workers in the agricultural sector can threaten agricultural sustainability and food security. This research aims to analyze the social stratification and interest of millennial farmers in vegetable commodities, determine the factors that influence interest. This research uses mixed methods research with a sequential explanatory research type. The research was conducted in the Central Bangka Regency from Septemberi 2023 to February 2024. This research involved 117 respondents and 30 informants. The quantitatif data analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS version 25. Qualitative data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The research results place experience indicators valued by millennial farmers. Millennial farmers' interest in vegetable commodities was in the very high category (88.00%). The results of the multiple linear regression show that commodity variables, digital technology, environment, and government support simultaneously or partially have a significant effect on the interest of millennial farmers, with a simultaneous contribution of 44.60%. Environmental variables are the variables that most strongly influence the interests of millennial farmers.

Abstract

Social remittances (ideas, system practice, and social capital flow from the receiving country to the home country) of Indonesian female migrant workers (BMP) in Hong Kong appeared better and more complete than other BMP in other countries like Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, or Singapore.  Based on that research, we are encouraged to do extensive research in order to identify factors  that push  BMP’s social remittances development  in Hong Kong, to identify kinds of social remmitances they receive  and to understand on how far their social remittances become a medium to empower them and their society.  This study is done in qualitative method that uses an in-depth interview technique and FGD.  Subjects of study are BMP, the government (Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration and BNP2TKI), NGOs, migrant workers’ organization and researchers of BMP. The study done in Cianjur (West Java), Wonosobo and Banyumas (Central Java) and Hong Kong indicates that during their migration process, female migrant workers not only have economical remittance that can be used for productive activities, but also social remittances.  The social remittances are in the form practical knowledge such as language skill and nursery; knowledge on health, financial management; ethical work; the mindset changing and networking. The study  indicate that female migrant workers are extraordinary women more than just an ex-helper.  Their migration has put them into a position as an agent of development in society.

Abstract

Badan Usaha Milik Desa (BUMDes) or Village-Owned Enterprises (VOEs) play an essential role in developing the rural economy. Unfortunately, there are numerous hurdles that VOEs must overcome, therefore many do not perform optimally. This study aims to examine how internal and external factors affect VOE performance in the agricultural and tourism sectors to boost rural economic development. Alternative solutions are then presented to improve VOE's performance. The study employs two samples: one VOE focuses on agriculture and the other on tourism. Observation, in-depth interviews, and a literature review were used to collect data, which was then evaluated using A'SWOT (AHP and SWOT). The findings demonstrate that both industries face infrastructure restrictions, market competitiveness, and poor branding. For agricultural VOEs, incorporating digital marketing to increase market reach, fortifying branding, and growing distribution networks are important tactics. Meanwhile, tourism VOEs should prioritize branding to boost destination appeal and infrastructure development to improve accessibility. Strengthening local branding through a compelling narrative and utilizing technology-driven marketing are critical for competitiveness. By implementing these strategies, VOEs can improve sustainability, attract a wider market, and support rural economic growth. Integrating branding, digital marketing, and infrastructure development ensures adaptability in an increasingly competitive landscape.

Abstract

Many studies on rice landrace (Oryza sativa sbsp. indica) have been conducted by biodiversity, ethnobotany, and agroecology disciplines. The importance of rice landraces as genetic resources and the basics of human civilizations. Conservation landraces in Tumbang Datu and Pongbembe nowadays are affected by the following socio-cultural constraints: a) decline numbers of local varieties after the regional government-imposed funding to local communities to substitute new-high yield varieties, b) rice rites and landrace conservation are on the brink of extinction. This research explores daily behaviors that contribute to rice landrace conservations through the sociological approach of collective memory and symbolic interaction. Today’s generations use new meanings and symbols of rice derived from collective memories and virtues. Various interviewees practice mnemonic devices (what, why, who, where, when, and how) that reflect foodways. According to Blumer, social structures are networks of interdependence among actors that place conditions on their actions. In these networks, people act and produce symbols and meanings of rice to interpret their situations and to have their own set in a localized process of social interpretation. Moreover, the Toraja language is used as a bridge in communicating the past, present, and future to strengthening collective identity. This research uses a qualitative method to explore rice landrace conservation using open-ended questions, in-depth interviews, and Focus Group Discussions. A free-listing method was followed to gather interviewees’ collective memories of rice landraces. Findings show that a combination of methods, tradition-based conservation, and current scientific-technology-based conservation become a practice for promoting, educating, and stimulating the public and researchers to engage in landraces conservation. These findings suggest that the socio-cultural ecosystem and Blumer’s social network support new networks to deliver science in agricultural innovation policy. The results showed that collective memories and foodways create ways that would benefit rice landrace conservation the most.

Abstract

The aim of decentralization is to increase the empowerment of independently owned potential in an effort to improve the welfare of the people in their respective regions. But real conditions do not describe the ideal situation that is expected. Economic development is not accompanied by equal distribution of income and disparities still exist. Bogor Regency has an average Gini Ratio value of 0.4 in 2018-2020, indicating that inequality is approaching a critical point and has the potential to give rise to social jealousy. Equal distribution of community welfare has become a strategic issue in the 2018-2023 Bogor Regency RPJMD which is manifested in financial assistance for village infrastructure for the Samisade program (Samilyar Sadesa – One Billion One Village) with the concept of developing villages. The community can actively participate in preparing and implementing priority programs that have been formulated together and have the same rights in receiving this assistance. Therefore, a study is needed regarding the contribution of community participation and policy implementation to the effectiveness of the Samisade Program as well as the contribution of community participation and policy implementation through the Samisade Program to equal distribution of welfare through the program. The research method used was descriptive quantitative based on data obtained through questionnaires distributed to 100 villages in 12 sub-districts. Data analysis using SmartPLS.
