Abstract

Indonesian retired female migrant workers (RFMWs) are pivotal in strengthening household economic and social resilience post-migration. This study analyzes remittance management, livelihood strategies, and family resilience among RFMWs in Kenanga Village, Indramayu Regency. A mixed-methods approach was applied, combining a survey of 80 households with in-depth interviews. Research instruments included a livelihood strategy questionnaire and the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (WFRQ). Results show that remittances were primarily used for housing construction or renovation, children's education, and business capital, enhancing physical and financial assets. The dominant livelihood strategy was non-agricultural business diversification due to limited natural capital. As many as 83.75% of households had high resilience, characterized by open communication, role flexibility, and adaptive capacity. These findings highlight the need for integrating remittance management with livelihood strategies to reinforce post-migration family resilience. Remittance management functions as an economic resource that supports household livelihood strategies, while livelihood strategies determine the sustainable use of remittances. These two dimensions are mutually reinforcing and, when integrated, contribute significantly to strengthening post-migration family resilience.

Abstract

Merauke's 2025 Community Paddy Field Expansion (CSR) is a strategic policy to expand rice fields outside Java to achieve food self-sufficiency in Indonesia. This study aims to examine how the development of sustainable food farming communities is shaped by the dialectic between local and neoliberal food governance in Merauke's 2025 CSR. Using a critical qualitative approach and a multi-level case study method in three of the 46 villages implementing Merauke's 2025 CSR, this study analyzes the interaction between state rationality and local governance in three socio-ecological types of villages. Qualitative primary data processed and analyzed through data condensation revealed that the implementation of Merauke 2025 CSR in three socio-ecological types of village communities created an antagonistic landscape between the former transmigrant village communities and the indigenous farming communities (native Papuans). Within this antagonistic landscape, the development of sustainable food farming communities is shaped by a negotiated interaction between central government policies with neoliberal governance and local community practices that lead to sustainable governance.

Abstract

Water resources are a crucial element in supporting the agricultural sector. The success of agricultural development is determined by water availability, as it is crucial for production activities. Unpredictable climate change significantly impacts various agricultural activities, particularly agricultural cultivation, which ultimately impacts agricultural productivity. Water resource management itself is an effort to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate the process of water resource conservation, water resource use, and control of damaged water resources. This research focuses on strengthening the role of farmer groups in managing water resources sustainably through capacity building and community organization. The main objectives of this research are to identify challenges faced by farmer groups by examining the level of farmer participation, evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs using the SROI method, and design more effective and sustainable capacity-building strategies through a SWOT analysis.

Abstract

Community participation plays an important role in determining the success of community-based waste management programs, especially waste banks. This study aims to analyze how different forms of community participation influence the success of the Sehati Waste Bank. Participation is examined through four dimensions: planning, implementation, utilization of results, and evaluation. This research employs a quantitative approach using a survey method involving 64 respondents. The findings show that community participation has a significant influence on the success of the waste bank. However, participation that is directly related to perceived benefits plays a more dominant role compared to other forms of participation. These findings indicate that the success of community-based programs is strongly influenced by how far the community can directly experience and utilize the benefits of the program.

Abstract

Many studies on rice landrace (Oryza sativa sbsp. indica) have been conducted by biodiversity, ethnobotany, and agroecology disciplines. The importance of rice landraces as genetic resources and the basics of human civilizations. Conservation landraces in Tumbang Datu and Pongbembe nowadays are affected by the following socio-cultural constraints: a) decline numbers of local varieties after the regional government-imposed funding to local communities to substitute new-high yield varieties, b) rice rites and landrace conservation are on the brink of extinction. This research explores daily behaviors that contribute to rice landrace conservations through the sociological approach of collective memory and symbolic interaction. Today’s generations use new meanings and symbols of rice derived from collective memories and virtues. Various interviewees practice mnemonic devices (what, why, who, where, when, and how) that reflect foodways. According to Blumer, social structures are networks of interdependence among actors that place conditions on their actions. In these networks, people act and produce symbols and meanings of rice to interpret their situations and to have their own set in a localized process of social interpretation. Moreover, the Toraja language is used as a bridge in communicating the past, present, and future to strengthening collective identity. This research uses a qualitative method to explore rice landrace conservation using open-ended questions, in-depth interviews, and Focus Group Discussions. A free-listing method was followed to gather interviewees’ collective memories of rice landraces. Findings show that a combination of methods, tradition-based conservation, and current scientific-technology-based conservation become a practice for promoting, educating, and stimulating the public and researchers to engage in landraces conservation. These findings suggest that the socio-cultural ecosystem and Blumer’s social network support new networks to deliver science in agricultural innovation policy. The results showed that collective memories and foodways create ways that would benefit rice landrace conservation the most.

Abstract

Bandung Regency Regional Regulation Number 7 of 2020 regarding the development of 100 tourism villages does not explicitly regulate the governance mechanism of tourism villages. Effective governance requires the involvement of individuals as local creators who are capable of initiating and sustaining tourism village management. This study aims to identify the qualities of local creators in driving tourism village governance and determining the sustainability of tourism village communities in Bandung Regency. This research employs a qualitative approach using primary data through observation, interviews, and focus group discussions, as well as secondary data obtained from village records. The informants consist of 23 individuals analyzed at the individual level. Data analysis includes the stages of data reduction, data display, verification, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that local initiators with strong leadership, education, experience, capacity, and innovative initiatives serve as local creators capable of mobilizing tourism village governance mechanisms. They operate through penta-helix collaboration, role-sharing dialogues, and profit distribution to ensure community sustainability. Community sustainability is marked by regional and national achievements based on indicators such as increasing tourist numbers, economic gains, and culturally and environmentally based development. Local creators and governance structures interact dynamically to ensure the long-term sustainability of tourism village communities. In conclusion, competent local creators act as key agents in driving adaptive and transformative governance mechanisms that ensure the sustainability of rural tourism communities in Bandung Regency.
