Abstract

Social remittances (ideas, system practice, and social capital flow from the receiving country to the home country) of Indonesian female migrant workers (BMP) in Hong Kong appeared better and more complete than other BMP in other countries like Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, or Singapore.  Based on that research, we are encouraged to do extensive research in order to identify factors  that push  BMP’s social remittances development  in Hong Kong, to identify kinds of social remmitances they receive  and to understand on how far their social remittances become a medium to empower them and their society.  This study is done in qualitative method that uses an in-depth interview technique and FGD.  Subjects of study are BMP, the government (Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration and BNP2TKI), NGOs, migrant workers’ organization and researchers of BMP. The study done in Cianjur (West Java), Wonosobo and Banyumas (Central Java) and Hong Kong indicates that during their migration process, female migrant workers not only have economical remittance that can be used for productive activities, but also social remittances.  The social remittances are in the form practical knowledge such as language skill and nursery; knowledge on health, financial management; ethical work; the mindset changing and networking. The study  indicate that female migrant workers are extraordinary women more than just an ex-helper.  Their migration has put them into a position as an agent of development in society.

Abstract

The aim of decentralization is to increase the empowerment of independently owned potential in an effort to improve the welfare of the people in their respective regions. But real conditions do not describe the ideal situation that is expected. Economic development is not accompanied by equal distribution of income and disparities still exist. Bogor Regency has an average Gini Ratio value of 0.4 in 2018-2020, indicating that inequality is approaching a critical point and has the potential to give rise to social jealousy. Equal distribution of community welfare has become a strategic issue in the 2018-2023 Bogor Regency RPJMD which is manifested in financial assistance for village infrastructure for the Samisade program (Samilyar Sadesa – One Billion One Village) with the concept of developing villages. The community can actively participate in preparing and implementing priority programs that have been formulated together and have the same rights in receiving this assistance. Therefore, a study is needed regarding the contribution of community participation and policy implementation to the effectiveness of the Samisade Program as well as the contribution of community participation and policy implementation through the Samisade Program to equal distribution of welfare through the program. The research method used was descriptive quantitative based on data obtained through questionnaires distributed to 100 villages in 12 sub-districts. Data analysis using SmartPLS.

Abstract

The progress of development and tourism in East Lombok Regency results in a need for labour and demands the mindset of society to be able to keep up with changes. Institutions of local communities such as pesantren (Islamic boarding school) and non-formal educational institutions provide services to the community for increasing competence. The community encourages the society to play a role in filling job and business opportunities and maintaining local wisdom. Community activities attract other actors from various levels, both government and private, to offer collaboration as an instrument to achieve goals. The community’s expectation of collaboration is synergizing, not delegating bureaucratic affairs. This approach offers an inclusive and participatory relationship within the Multilevel Governance (MLG). This study uses a qualitative approach with a constructivism paradigm. Data collections was carried by observation, interview, and documentation. The aim of the research is to see how the community's expectations of the MLG approach are in strengthening job and business opportunities and how the community's SOAR strategy analysis maintains the sustainability. The results of the study show that the awareness of the actors in carrying out their roles and authorities creates a conducive environment for the community to be independent. The strategy SOAR analysis is in the OA quadrant, advantage of opportunities to achieve expectations by developing partnerships that create participatory dialogue to strengthen accessibility and support local potential

Abstract

Kerinci Seblat National Park in Bengkulu, Indonesia, was gazetted by the Indonesian government, and its overlaps with forests occupied by most indigenous communities made their farming activities in the area illegal. People were prohibited from accessing and expanding their farming areas in the national park, threatening their livelihoods. The livelihood diversity index (LDI) and livelihood asset index (LAI) were used to explore the livelihood systems of these communities. This study also examines the effect of livelihood assets on livelihood diversity and analyzes livelihood strategy choices using Giddens’ structuration theory. A quantitative survey combined with in-depth interviews was conducted in two villages with different land types: wetlands (rice fields) and drylands (farmlands). This study found that the communities diversified their livelihoods into eight types of livelihood strategies. Almost all livelihood indicators were different, and the differences in livelihood asset indicators affected the LDI. As a process of structuration, communities have diversified their livelihoods into farm (e.g., annual and perennial crops), off-farm (e.g., farm wages), and non-farm (e.g., services and government transfer) activities. Rural households have modified their social and physical structures to secure their livelihoods by optimizing agricultural intensification technologies or by seeking non-agricultural income. Households decide whether to specialize or diversify their livelihoods based on factors such as the area of cultivated land, number of crops cultivated, distance of the farming location from the house, total household income, non-farm income, and reciprocal relationships.
