Abstract

During the pandemic, healthy life behavior is needed in an attempt to reduce the transmission risk.  One of them could be done by washing hands. Various human activities may not allow them to wash their hands frequently, for example, using hand sanitizer to wash hands. Hand sanitizer or Isopropyl based alcohol are recommended materials by WHO to clean bacteria on hands. Storing hand sanitizer for a longer time leads to inaccurate quality of the hand sanitizer to the written quality on the package. A simple alcohol meter is designed to test the liquid percentage of hand sanitizer or Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) based alcohol. The required materials are easy to get from the surrounding environment. Thus, this device could be established at home without ignoring the health protocol. Although it has strength IPA-based alcohol or hand sanitizer is also risky if it is incorrectly used

Abstract

The importance of water management for milkfish cultivation determines the yields. This research aims to find the performance specification and pH, TDS, and Salinometer measurement (PTS) design validity and relevance. These tools are combinations from various sensors connected by Arduino nano 328 system, pH meter analogue, turbidity, and salinity measurement sensors complemented by Liquid Crystal Display and battery. They are connected by data cable. The findings showed that 1) the system’s performance specification was applying copper electrodes as the salinity, turbidity, and pH meter sensors. The Arduino system did the readings of the data. 2) the device-design specification was valid and relevant to measure the pond water quality for cultivating milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsk).

Abstract

Coffee grounds are a by-product of the coffee brewing process. Currently, coffee grounds in the community are still untapped waste. Whereas spent coffee grounds has the potential to be converted into various high value bio-products that are environmentally friendly. This study aims to characterize coffee grounds waste which is popular in the community as a supporting material for renewable energy. This study uses a comparative method of 3 samples of Arabica coffee grounds (SCG-A), Robusta (SCG-R), and the Arabica-Robusta blend (SCG-AR) from coffee brands that are popular in Indonesian. Quantitative analysis was carried out by comparing the percentage of residual yield of the three samples. Qualitative characterization of coffee grounds was carried out using the FTIR 8300/8700 Spectrophotometer. The results of the three samples showed different rendemen values, namely 70% SCG-A, 60% SCG-R, and 80% SCG-AR. The FTIR test results showed that the three spent coffee grounds had the same functional group characteristics in the frequency range of 650–3900 cm-1. The detection of the hydroxyl functional group (-OH), the asymmetric strain of the CH bond of the methyl group (-CH3), and the stretching vibration of CO in the COH bond found in coffee grounds waste shows its potential as a supporting material for renewable energy if a further process is carried out in the form of pyrolysis/calcination at room temperature. 700◦C. Utilization of spent coffee grounds in the community can be done by establishing a Spent Coffee Grounds Bank (SCG Bank), educating the public so that they are willing to donate spent coffee grounds, and managing SCG as a supporting material for renewable energy.

Abstract

The liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) formula from peanut and banana peels. This research aims to: (1). Analyze the effect of LOF provision from peanut and banana peels on the vegetative growth of spinach; (2). Analyze the best LOF dose for vegetative growth of spinach, and (3). Analyze the effect differences between NPK fertilizer and LOF from peanut and banana peels toward the vegetative growth of spinach. The researchers promoted this study from November to December 2020 in a greenhouse in Banjarbaru. The researchers applied RAL design by providing fertilizer since the spinaches were 10, 17, and 24 days. The vegetative growth parameters were: Plant height, number of leaves, leaf width, and the leave color. The result proved that: (1). LOF provisions from peanut and banana peels significantly influenced the height and leave numbers of spinach; (2). The best dose for LOF provision is 50ml of peanut peel LOF + 50ml of banana peel LOF to get excellent height and leave numbers of the spinach; (3). The growth of the spinach, in terms of height, numbers of leaves, and leaf width during NPK fertilizer provision, was in line with the provisions of banana and peanut peel LOF.

Abstract

Abstract

This work investigated the effect of post-annealing treatment on the fabrication of zinc oxide (ZnO) thin film by spraying deposition method. Based on SEM analysis, the annealed ZnO thin film at 400˚C presented better uniformity as compared to the non-annealed film. Further measurement by UV-Vis revealed that the lowest optical band gap energy (Eg) (3.22 eV) was achieved by 400˚C sample. These results confirmed that post-annealing treatment enhanced the optical and morphological properties of the fabricated ZnO thin film.

Abstract

This study aims to find an alternative sound-absorbing material from nature that is cheap and environmentally friendly, namely the water hyacinth plant (Eichhornia crassipes). The experimental soundproofing tool from a glass box with a placemat skat was developed by integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) elements as an alternative project-based learning model (PjBL) for students. The research method used is experimental. Water hyacinth was sun-dried, woven in the form of a placemat with two variations of the test samples at several frequencies of 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 750 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 1500 Hz. Six stages of PjBL are used, and elements of STEAM are integrated. The results of the study obtained the value of Noise Reduction (NR) of sound for test samples 1, test sample 2, or a combination of test samples 1 and 2. Each test sample is effective at 1500 Hz high frequency; namely, test NR 1 = 8.7 dB, test NR 2 = 8.3 dB, and NR Gab=9.3 dB. The combined test sample was also effective at frequencies of 500 Hz and 750 Hz, with NR Gab=4.3 dB and NR Gab=4.7 dB. Following the theory that changes in sound between 3 to 12 dB have effects that humans can feel. This study concludes that natural water hyacinth fiber has fairly good quality as an alternative sound-dampening material. This experimental tool can also be an alternative to the STEAM-integrated PjBL learning model.
