Abstract

This study aims to describe the textual dimensions in news discourse on climate change in the online media Le Monde and Le Figaro, using the Critical Discourse Analysis model developed by Teun A. Van Dijk. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with documentation techniques on four online news articles about climate change published in Le Monde and Le Figaro in 2024, selected based on the theme of the global climate crisis and its visibility on the main page. The analysis was conducted by identifying global themes, news structure schemes, and semantic, syntactic, stylistic, and rhetorical devices based on Van Dijk's text dimension model. The results show that both media outlets highlight the global climate crisis as a macro theme, but organize information differently and utilize contrasting micro devices. Le Monde more frequently uses evaluative lexicon and references to global political actors to frame climate change as a failure of diplomacy, while Le Figaro emphasizes scientific legitimacy through expert quotes and quantitative data, creating an impression of technocratic urgency. These findings clarify how media ideological orientation influences climate crisis meaning-making strategies and demonstrate the usefulness of Van Dijk's text dimension framework for revealing differences in climate framing in French-language mainstream media.

Abstract

The study aims to elucidate the interdisciplinary perspective of folklore studies and arts-based research (ABR), focusing on the novelization of traditional stories to strengthen character education. An interdisciplinary perspective on language, literature, art, and education studies is employed to investigate how traditional folklore can be re-created through creative literary endeavors. Using an ABR qualitative research design, preceded by realist ethnographic research and in-depth character content analysis, this study explores the complexities of transforming oral traditions into written narratives, emphasizing the role of artistic interpretation in preserving cultural heritage and values. The steps of ABR are carried out through comparative data, literature review, and analysis of art practices of the selected traditional stories for their new adaptation. The results show that the folklore (legend) of Raden Alit has three variants. The variants teach about the values of religiousness, nationalism, independence, cooperation, and integrity. The variants of the Raden Alit folklore (legend) can be combined and transformed into a novel (didactic literature) through the six stages of the creative process of fiction-based research (FBR) design, which is part of arts-based research. The implications of this research are essential for socio-cultural in the contemporary context because it is relevant to the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. By integrating insights from folklore studies, literary analysis, and artistic practice, this study contributes to an emerging interdisciplinary research field. It offers valuable insights into the transformative potential of arts-based approaches to preserving and disseminating traditional folklore.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of an innovative instructional model that integrates critical literacy pedagogy with structured teacher–parent collaboration to enhance elementary students’ advanced critical reading skills. Grounded in the principles of critical literacy, the model extends literacy learning beyond the classroom by aligning school-based instruction with guided home literacy practices. The study responds to the urgent need to strengthen Indonesian students’ higher-order reading abilities in the context of information overload and persistent low literacy achievement. A quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control group design was employed involving 37 fourth-grade students from a public elementary school in West Bandung Regency. The experimental group (n = 21) participated in the innovative collaborative literacy model, while the control group (n = 16) received conventional language instruction. The intervention was implemented through three stages problematization, cultural discussion, and social action—using thematic texts on bullying and environmental issues. Students’ critical reading was measured across six dimensions: interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation, explanation, and self-regulation. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-tests. Results showed no significant pre-test differences between groups. However, post-test findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group (p < 0.05) with medium normalized gain scores. Teachers demonstrated high pedagogical understanding, and parents showed adequate readiness, supporting effective implementation. These findings indicate that innovative family–school literacy integration can effectively advance critical reading development and offers a scalable approach to strengthening advanced literacy in primary education.

Abstract

This study develops an operational playwriting framework by integrating Greimas’s actantial model into an Art-Based Research (ABR) process to transform the Dadaha folklore into a contemporary drama script, “Jantur.” Data were drawn from five oral informants, local archival sources, contextual socio-ecological materials, and an auditable trail of iterative script drafts. The ABR process was organized into a cyclical workflow comprising (1) narrative segmentation and motif indexing, (2) actantial mapping of functional relations and value oppositions, (3) canonical narrative schema alignment (manipulation–competence–performance–sanction), (4) semiotic – to - dramaturgical translation into scene objectives, obstacle systems, and escalation patterns, and (5) reflective revision supported by documented decision logs and expert feedback. Rather than treating narrative semiotics as post hoc interpretation, actantial mapping is positioned as a generative compositional logic that regulates character functions, conflict configuration, and ethical causality during drafting. The resulting script demonstrates how creative writing can operate as analytical inquiry, preserving the folklore’s ecological and ethical meanings while recontextualizing them for contemporary performance and learning contexts. Methodologically, the study contributes a replicable semiotic-to-dramaturgical workflow that makes the analysis-to-composition pathway transparent and reusable for folklore-to-drama adaptation and scriptwriting pedagogy. Keywords: Actantial mapping; Art-Based Research; Folklore-to-drama adaptation; Greimas’s actantial model; Playwriting

Abstract

Abstract

KATA KUNCI: cerita rakyat Panjalu; tradisi Nyangku; relasi sakral manusia–alam; transmisi nilai budaya   SACRED HUMAN-NATURE RELATIONS IN PANJALU FOLKTALES: A STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE NYANGKU TRADITION AS A MEDIUM FOR TRANSMITTING CULTURAL VALUES     ABSTRACT: Folktales and the Nyangku tradition constitute an important cultural heritage of the Panjalu community, representing a sacred relationship between humans, nature, and ancestors. However, previous studies have tended to focus on descriptive aspects of rituals and religious values without systematically examining how human–nature relations are constructed through the narrative structures of folktales. This gap reveals a discrepancy between folkloristic theory, which emphasizes the importance of narrative structure, and existing research practices that remain largely thematic. This study aims to structurally analyze the sacred human–nature relationship embedded in Panjalu folktales that underlie the Nyangku tradition and to explain their function as a medium for transmitting cultural values. The study employed a qualitative descriptive-interpretative approach using Structural-Based Analysis of folktales collected through in-depth interviews with traditional elders, custodians, and Panjalu community members, as well as observations of the Nyangku tradition. The findings indicate that Panjalu folktales possess a systematic narrative structure with cause–effect patterns that place harmony among humans, nature, and ancestors at the core of the stories. Human–nature relations are constructed as relational-sacred rather than utilitarian, integrating religious, social, moral, and historical values. This study concludes that Panjalu folktales and the Nyangku tradition form a Relational–Sacred System of Nature Values that sustains the cultural identity of the Panjalu community through narrative and ritual practices. Abstract

French literature education in Indonesian universities currently faces significant obstacles due to dependence on passive media (87.7%) and high linguistic barriers (77.2%) that make it difficult for students to understand the syntax and meaning of complex literary texts. This study aims to develop and test the feasibility of Francolittera, a web-based interactive learning medium designed to address these gaps. Using the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), this study involved 57 students in the needs analysis stage and 25 students in a limited operational trial. The evaluation instrument was developed by adapting the Learning Object Review Instrument (LORI) 2.0 framework. The result of the development is a web platform with a hierarchical material structure (period, author, work) that integrates asynchronous reflective review features with a curation system by administrators to maintain content and interaction quality. Based on the final evaluation on a scale of 1–5, the media was categorized as Very Suitable with an overall average score of 4.38, covering material expert validation (4.50), media expert validation (4.25), and user acceptability testing (4.40). These results indicate that Francolittera has the potential to support independent learning, as reflected in the level of user acceptance of the asynchronous reflective review feature, which facilitates interpretive understanding of literary works in the context of use without direct supervision.

Abstract

Background: Multimodal learning has gained increasing attention in language education because it enables learners to construct meaning through text, visuals, audio, gesture, space, and social interaction. However, the literature remains fragmented, and no integrated model has been clearly established for Indonesian language learning in elementary schools. Purpose: This study analyses the conceptual and pedagogical characteristics and design components of multimodal learning, its influence on students' language-skill development, and the conceptual, methodological, and assessment gaps in the literature. Methods: This study used a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design. Articles indexed in Scopus were selected through the PRISMA flow. The search identified 277 records, and 44 reports were included in the final analysis. Findings: The integration of text, visuals, audio, gestures, social interaction, and meaning-making activities within structured instructional designs characterises multimodal learning. Across the reviewed studies, it tends to support reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary development, and communicative competence. However, its effectiveness varies depending on instructional design, teacher readiness, student characteristics, and classroom context. The literature also remains conceptually, methodologically, and contextually fragmented, especially regarding Indonesian language learning in elementary schools. Research implications: The findings provide a conceptual foundation for developing Indonesian language instruction that is more contextual, participatory, and supportive of integrated language-skill development. They also offer guidance for designing more coherent instructional models, implementation strategies, and assessment systems for elementary school settings. Conclusion: Multimodal learning should be understood not merely as media variation, but as a design of meaning and learning experience. Future research needs to test integrated multimodal models directly in Indonesian elementary school language classrooms. Originality: This study systematically maps the conceptual foundations, pedagogical patterns, empirical trends, and research gaps in multimodal learning as a basis for developing Indonesian language-learning models in elementary schools. The review highlights that the existing literature remains fragmented and has yet to produce many fully integrated models for this context.

Abstract

Listening skills are an important basic skill in French language learning, especially for beginners at the A1 level. This study aims to analyze the suitability of French listening materials on the Memrise platform with CECRL indicators. The method used is descriptive qualitative through documentation and content analysis techniques. The sample was selected purposively based on relevance to the CECRL Level A1 indicators. The analysis results indicate that the eight contents examined represent all listening indicators at the A1 level. The materials are presented contextually, with audiovisual support and clear pronunciation by native speakers. These findings suggest that Memrise can be used as an alternative learning medium to support the mastery of basic French listening skills.
