Abstract

This study was to investigate Indonesian English University students’ perception on plagiarism in an online world. This study was a mixed-method with explanatory sequential design. The population and sample in this study were 633 EFL students in a University in North Bali, Indonesia. Two instruments were employed to collect the data, namely a questionnaire and an interview guide which were developed based on three dimensions, namely knowledge about plagiarism, attitudes toward plagiarism, and beliefs to prevent plagiarism. The questionnaire consisted of 14 valid statements while the interview guide consisted of 19 valid questions. The data were analyzed descriptively. The result showed that 62.88% of EFL students reported to have positive and very positive knowledge about plagiarism, 69.87% of EFL students reported to have positive and very positive attitudes toward plagiarism, and 72.27% of EFL students reported to have positive and very positive beliefs to prevent plagiarism. This implies that the EFL students were aware about plagiarism and they tended not to plagiarize on their assignments. However, finding trusted sources and paraphrasing sentences were the students’ most challenges on plagiarism in the online world. Familiarizing with concept, understanding, referencing style and system, like APA, Mendeley, and subscribing to online database, like ERIC or DOAJ are highly suggested.

Abstract

The switching between conventional learning to online learning during this pandemic quite affected the learning approach adopted by students. This study aims to determine the learning approach of the eighth-grade students at one of public schools in Bali during online learning. The mixed-method was used in this study with two instruments for data collection: the R-SPQ-2F questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. This study involved 168 eighth grade students of one public junior high school in Bali. The analysis of the mean score of R-SPQ-2F was used to evaluate the data from questionnaire, while the interactive model analysis was used to analyze the interview data. Based on the findings, the learning method of the eight-grade students in the context of online learning tends to be of deep approach. The results of the interview revealed that the student learning approach was influenced by several supporting and inhibiting factors. This shows that student learning approaches can adapt and be influenced by various factors faced by students during the learning process. These factors can come from within students and students’ learning environment. Therefore, teachers should have a better understanding of learning approaches adopted by students during online learning situations to assist students in achieving learning success. Keywords: EFL, online learning, students’ learning approach

Abstract

The COVID-19 situation causes a sudden and unexpected shift of face-to-face pedagogy to emergency remote teaching mode. In that transition, teachers often do not have enough space and time to explore various technology to support their teaching and learning practices that should be done flexibly in multiple places and times. In response, the primary purposes of this article are to introduce a technology tool called Screencast-O-Matic (SOM), its potentials, and possible practices of using SOM that EFL lecturers might adopt for their teaching and learning purposes, specifically in the current pandemic era. Some of the practices discussed in this paper are the use of SOM to: record a video lecturer on how to write a paper following an APA format, give video-based feedback to students’ work, make a digital video presentation, and be a digital mirror that helps students review their speaking performance before they do an actual video presentation. The discussions of the paper are supported by some of the authors’ actual experiences in using SOM in their classrooms, related research findings, and literature. Ideas for future research are presented.

Abstract

Education has increasingly turned to virtual learning in response to greater awareness of the benefits of virtual learning, increased technology to support learning outside of educational institutions, and, sadly, the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, awareness has also increased of the benefits of student-student cooperation, and technology to facilitate that cooperation has multiplied. Unfortunately, not all students have access to that technology. This article shares ideas, both low-tech and high-tech, to enhance the functioning of groups in virtual learning environments.

Abstract

Teachers have a responsibility to help students become autonomous learners. However, in promoting learner autonomy, the teachers were faced with the challenges. This descriptive qualitative study aimed to describe the challenges in promoting learner autonomy in 21st-century learning faced by EFL teachers and their strategies. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview technique. Four qualified EFL junior high school teachers with at least five years of teaching experience in Singaraja Bali Indonesia were involved. The interview guideline was constructed based on the dimensions of policy constraints, institutional constraints, language teaching methodology, and learner's background. The interviews were transcribed and categorized into the table of identification based on the four dimensions. Finally, the data regarding the challenges and the strategies were interpreted, and the excerpts of the interview were provided.  The results show that the policy constraint identified in this study was due to the school zoning system. The institutional constraint was due to the unscheduled events. The language teaching methodology was due to the lack of knowledge of teaching strategy and different characteristics of students. Thus, in transforming the challenges into possibilities, some strategies were implemented, such as initiating activities, applying collaborative learning, and having good planning and time management.

Abstract

Google Forms is one of the educational applications that teachers in teaching activities can use to assess students. Teachers usually create questions and quizzes and process students' scores through Google Forms. This study was a qualitative study that explains the perception of elementary school teachers in using Google Forms as a medium to assess their students. The data were collected through a perception questionnaire which provided five statements and three questions about the use of Google Forms in assessment. There were 45 primary teachers as the respondents, which consisted of 37 female teachers and 8 male teachers. The data were analyzed qualitatively by presenting and explaining the data. The survey showed that most of them often use Google Forms media to assess students. The respondents agreed that Google Forms is easy to use, effective, efficient and paperless media to evaluate the students. Moreover, sometimes they also use Google Forms to conduct other activities, such as completing the administrative data of students, conducting students' attendance, and obtaining the parents' opinions. They will also continue to use Google Forms as a medium to assess their students and assist in organizing teaching and learning activities if the online learning system returns to normal (face to face). Based on the data results, Google Form can be stated as one of the applications that help teachers implement online learning to carry out online assessments for primary school students.

Abstract

As the facilitator of the learning process, the teacher needs to utilize appropriate media for students to help them learn better. Visual media is considered a great help as it provides information more attractively. Thus, this study aimed to develop infographics as an English teaching medium for 8th-grade junior high school students. The subject of this research was the English learning media used by the 8th-grade teacher at SMPN 4 Singaraja. This study was a Design and Development research which consisted of 3 steps of research, namely design, development, and evaluation. The researcher's notes, infographic development blueprints, instrument validation, and expert judgment were used to collect the data. The data were from the researchers' notes, and the infographic development blueprint was described qualitatively. Meanwhile, the score obtained from the instrument validation and the results of the expert judgment were explained quantitatively. The final result indicated that the infographic is very good to be used as an English teaching medium, especially for the 8th grade of junior high school students. Therefore, this research concluded that by developing books containing infographics, English teachers could have another type of visual media to teach all topics in grade 8 by using infographics.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the students’ and teacher’s challenges in learning EFL in distance learning context for 162 eleventh grade students and one English teacher in SMK Nusa Dua Toya Anyar Kubu, Karangasem in the academic year of 2020/2021. This study used mixed-method as the data were collected through questionnaire for the quantitative data and interview for qualitative data. The quantitative data were analyzed by using SPSS to find the mean score and used TCR guidelines of categorization developed from Sugiyono (2017), while the qualitative data were analyzed according to the steps by Miles and Huberman (1994). The result of students’ challenges are found that the challenges related to instructional variables (lack of explanation from teachers and limited opportunity to practice four English basic skills) were categorized the highest challenges experienced by the students compared to in institutional and individual variables. In addition, the result for the teacher’s data analysis found that the evaluation and assessment variables are the highest challenges compared to access and motivation variables. Understanding the role of teacher as the instructor in distance learning is important to improve students’ ability and can minimize the students’ challenges in distance learning.
