Abstract

Emergency online learning has transformed today’s learning while opening up opportunities and challenges, one of which is learning approach. This study aims to investigate students’ learning approach in the English Education study program in emergency online learning. A mixed-method was employed using two instruments; R-SPQ-2F questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The results of the instrument check showed that the R-SPQ-2F survey and interview guide were valid (.90) and reliable (α=.88). Calculated using Slovin formula, there were 302 respondents for this study. The survey data were analysed using R-SPQ-2F mean score analysis and interview data were with interactive model analysis. The results of the study indicate that the learning approach of students in the English education study program in the context of emergency learning tends to be deep. The interview results provide important information that the student approach is influenced by several supporting and inhibiting factors. This shows that the student learning approach is dynamic in adjusting to learning process. Policy makers, lecturers, and students need to consider aspects of this learning approach in the current emergency online situation for a more effective and meaningful learning process.

Abstract

The globalization and 21st century learning needs students to adopt a better approach to learning. As there are two types of approaches namely surface approach and deep approach, it is needed to investigate which are students leaning towards to, including the supporting and inhibiting factors that influence them especially in the sudden transition of online learning in pandemic situation. Using the modified R-SPQ-2F and a semi-guided interview, the study was conducted in one high school in North Bali. Using Slovin formula, there are 200 respondents who participated in the study. The modified R-SPQ-2F were analyzed using the mean score analysis and the results are students leaning towards the surface approach in the context of EFL Online learning. The interview analyzed with interactive model analysis gives comprehensive view of the supporting and inhibiting factors of the deeper approach. Turns out personal motivation, teachers’ style of teaching, and environmental factors directs their approach. These findings showed that the student learning approach is one way to evaluate the learning process. Teachers, students, and government should consider this to re-adjust the current learning situation to improve the quality of education.

Abstract

This paper aimed to analyze Polytechnic learners’ perception of multimodality in Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in an English instructional context. This research was a survey with a quantitative approach. Purposive sampling was employed and considered only for students who learned English language lessons at eight classes in the Business Administration Department, Politeknik Negeri Bali. Questionnaires focused on the Performance Expectancy (PE), Effort Expectancy (EE), and Behavior Intention (BI) of UTAUT theory. The result of the study indicated that internet technology was prevalent to be used by the students and there was a keen exploration of the English materials in a multimodal perspective that is a combination of technology-based learning materials with various modes, involving audiovisual, pictures, realia, in different formats. The usefulness of the device and the ease of technology used contribute to the use of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) in learning the English language. The result also revealed the entrepreneur candidates tended to choose MALL with multimodal immersion as a fruitful combination to escalate their English language skills. Policies, subject matter expertise, appropriate pedagogies, and relevant use of technology support are suggested to explore the usefulness of MALL for students in Polytechnic education.

Abstract

The study aimed to develop supplementary material using Wordwall-based learning media for learning relative clauses and examined the experiences of 12th-grade students in using Wordwall. The study employed Design and Development (DnD) research method which conducted design, development, and evaluation steps. This study used the topic of the relative clause as a result of pre-observation in tackling an existing problem in learning relative clauses. This research used two instruments: a blueprint of supplementary material and a User Evaluation Questionnaire (UEQ). The UEQ examined 5 dimensions of users’ experiences in using a digital product: attractiveness, perspicuity, efficiency, dependability, stimulation, and novelty. The data were collected by analyzing the syllabus, preparing the Wordwall platform, distributing the questionnaire, and analyzing the questionnaire’s results. The questionnaire was filled with 32 students and 1 teacher who are taking English Language and Literature (Concentration) subjects. The data collected was analyzed and explained qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the user experiences were attractiveness gained excellent (2.1), perspicuity gained above average (1.68), the efficiency gained excellent (1.88), dependability gained excellent (2.25), stimulation gained good quality (1.55), and novelty gained excellent quality (2.13). These results indicate that the developed supplementary material brings students attractive, fun, motivating, efficient, and fresh experiences in using Wordwall for learning relative clauses. Therefore, the developed Wordwall-based supplementary material for learning relative clauses material is very good to be implemented for the learning and teaching process for 12th-grade students.

Abstract

During pandemic, almost all school activities rely on the use of technology. Teachers are expected to teach using the online platforms. This study aims at analyzing the readiness of English high school teachers who are categorized into Gen X in integrating technology in teaching, by using TPACK framework.  The study applies a descriptive qualitative design. Research subjects were 58 Gen X English high school teachers in one province in Indonesia. Data were collected by distributing online questionnaire to the teachers. Data analysis of triangulation was conducted by doing semi-structured interviews to volunteered teachers. The findings revealed that the Gen X teachers were not ready to integrate teaching with technology. Of all seven integration variables in TPACK, the first level knowledge bases are responded positively. When it comes to the second and third level knowledge bases, the teachers’ responses tend to decrease. Some problems in the technology integration were revealed during the interview. Trainings of teachers’ professionalism for teachers from generation X are considered necessary, especially training on the use of technology and the internet in learning. ICT curriculum integration is also an important issue. Finally, limitations and implications for the education authorities and future research were discussed.
