Abstract

Abstract: The use of technological tools to teach English skill, especially listening, has proved by previous study bring a positive effect towards students’ performance. Therefore, this study aimed to see the effectiveness of TED-Ed as video based media on students’ listening skill at SMAN 1 Singaraja, Bali. This research is an experimental study, in which applied quasi-experimental design with post-test only control-group design. The data were collected through post-test and later, the post-test result from both groups were compared and analyzed. The result showed that the mean score of experimental group was higher than the control group, 80,03 > 75,49. It indicates that the group taught with TED-Ed had better result than the other group who taught by using audio based media. Moreover, the sig. (2-tailed) value in the independent sample t-test was lower than 0,5, in which 0,003. It means that there was a significant effect towards the use of TED-Ed on student’s listening skill. Therefore, TED-Ed affects the students’ listening skill and makes the students perform better than the use of audio based media.

Abstract

School Literacy Program is expected to be able to develop students' interest in reading. However, in practice, schools can still not achieve these goals indicated by the existence of challenges in its implementation. Thus, this study aimed at describing the challenges faced by EFL teachers in implementing school literacy programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducting a descriptive qualitative study, four EFL junior high school teachers were interviewed using a semi-structured interview. The results of the study show that the EFL teachers were challenged by four factors in implementing the school literacy program during COVID-19, namely, 1) students' interest in reading, 2) the technical challenges, 3) the teacher's lack of understanding about the school literacy program, 4) time management. These four factors were considered some of the challenges, such as students read in order to fulfil the obligation to fill out daily journals, not because of their own desires, technological illiteracy, and inadequate source of online reading. Therefore, the practitioners of school activities can respond and take thoughtful actions regarding the problems they face in implementing the school literacy program.

Abstract

The use of Wordwall is essential for learning English vocabulary as an interactive and effective medium. Wordwall media can help students increase their engagement in learning vocabulary. The purpose of this research is to investigate students' perceptions of how engaged students are in learning English vocabulary using Wordwall. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. This research was carried out in one of the junior high schools located in Bima NTB, especially in grade eight. Then, three students were selected purposively to participate in the research to represent the population based on recommendations from English teachers with the criteria of being low to active in learning English. The data was collected through documentation and interviews. In the documentation, students are asked to do several activities in Wordwall regarding learning material for around 20 minutes. Then, students are asked to write about 10 new vocabularies based on the Wordwall they learned. Furthermore, interviews in the form of semi-structured interviews are related to three main aspects of student engagement by Fredricks and McColskey (2012) such as cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement. The findings in this research are that using Wordwall can help the students enrich their vocabulary (cognitive), students provide positive reactions during learning (emotional), and students actively participate during the learning process by using Wordwall (behavior).
