Abstract

This study aims to reveal the origins of cave naming in Central Buton. This is carried out by classifying the aspects of toponymy, namely physical manifestation, social aspects, and cultural aspects, so that the close relationship between language, environment, and the culture of the local community can be demonstrated. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with inductive data analysis. The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with traditional leaders and local community members who understand the history of the caves. The interviews were conducted using recording and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed through qualitative thematic analysis. The results show that the physical manifestation aspect is reflected in cave names based on their physical conditions and environment, with 6 data findings. The social aspect appears in cave names associated with local figures, with 3 data findings. Meanwhile, the cultural aspect is present through community myths and legends, with 4 data findings. Thus, it can be understood that the toponymy of caves in Central Buton does not merely represent the identity of physical space but also functions as a living archive that records ecological knowledge, social memory, and the cultural heritage of the community.

Abstract

This research targets a holistic investigation of the types of politeness strategies performed by the characters in Joker movie along with their social contexts. It further aims to find the influences of movie stages (orientation, complication, evaluation, resolution) and social factors (power, social distance) to the use of politeness strategies by the characters of the movie. This study utilized a socio-pragmatics approach to investigate the social contexts and a theoretical framework proposed by Brown and Levinson (1978) to identify politeness strategies in the movie. This research was upheld using descriptive qualitative research which is underpinned by four major stages of analysis by Santosa’s (2021) model, in combination with Spreadly (1980), and Miles and Huberman (1996) ranging from domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analysis. The data of this research are taken from the dialogues that contained politeness strategies performed by the characters. The data sources come from the stages of Joker movie ranging from the orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution.

Abstract

Apology is one of expressive speech acts aims to erase the wound. Speech texts, uttered by most influential people, has transactional function to emphasize the content of the apology as speech act itself. Pope’s apology is considered a significant moment to reconcile societal conflicts, especially indigenous Canadians. The strategy used by Pope in his apology was considered successful, because it received a positive response from the victim's family. This study describes Pope Francis' apology strategy to Indigenous Canadians using the CDA model presented by van Dijk and Foucault and the theory of apology strategy proposed by Trosborg. The data are taken from the speech transcripts derived from official websites and analyzed usik content analysis. Through the description of apology strategies, it can bea concluded that Pope Francis used direct and indirect strategies that show his effort to erase the racism issues in society. This also shown how hegemony handles the main role to overcome the issues of racism that has raised by the media. It is hoped to be investigated further to get more explanation of language roles to reconcile the conflicts.

Abstract

Sentence shifts often occur when a sentence in the source language cannot be directly translated into the target language without altering the meaning or message of the source language. This research investigates sentence-level and its types of transpositions in The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read and examines their influence on translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. A qualitative method with a single-embedded case study design was used to gather the data from transposed sentences. Findings revealed a predominance of downward rank shifts (189 instances) over upward rank shifts (15 instances), indicating the translator’s tendency to simplify complex source structures into more concise target-language forms. The translation quality achieved high scores in accuracy (2.9) and readability (2.9), suggesting that the intended meaning was preserved and the text remained easy to comprehend. However, acceptability scored slightly lower (2.7), implying that some lexical and syntactic choices did not fully conform to the cultural and linguistic norms of the target language. With an overall mean score of 2.8, the translation is categorised as “good” but could be improved through refined vocabulary selection, enhanced idiomatic expressions, and greater cultural adaptation. These findings highlight the functional role of transposition in balancing semantic fidelity, naturalness, and clarity in English–Indonesian translation.

Abstract

This study investigates the strategic deployment of appraisal system resources in Indonesian tourism opinion discourse, comparing evaluative patterns in articles focusing on Java versus those on destinations outside Java, across Detik.com, Kompasiana.com, and Jawapos.com. The research problem addresses the language choices used to construct diverse tourist destinations in an expanding digital sphere. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics and Appraisal Theory, the study analyzes six tourism opinion articles, purposively selected from the three prominent online media outlets. Findings indicate that Java destinations are presented with a multifaceted image, balancing positive APPRECIATION attributes like affordability, accessibility, and comfort, with more frequent negative JUDGMENT regarding site challenges and visitor responsibility. On the other hand, non-Java destinations are framed as exceptional and aspirational through highly intensified positive evaluations and prominent APPRECIATION:QUALITY and APPRECIATION:VALUATION, reflecting a strategy to differentiate and highlight unique selling propositions for less familiar audiences. While all the articles are MONOGLOSSIC, media variations further reveal distinct editorial practices, with Kompasiana emphasizing JUDGMENT for responsible tourism and Jawa Pos using hyperbole GRADUATION for aspirational non-Java travel, while Detik maintains a more HETEROGLOSSIC informational tone. This research contributes to understanding how language systematically persuades in digital tourism promotion, offering insights for academics and practitioners on effective audience engagement and destination branding in Indonesia.

Abstract

The rapid evolution of competitive gaming has emphasized communication as a crucial strategy in elite tournaments. However, directive speech acts in this high-pressure environment remain largely unexplored in sociopragmatic research. This study addresses that gap by examining the sociopragmatic features of directive speech acts in professional e-sports, using the documentary EVOS Legends: Final M-Series Pertama (M1) as a case study. As findings from a single bounded case, results are specific to this context and should not be generalized to other gaming communities, e-sports titles, or media; this also means the observed patterns may be shaped by the documentary's emphasis on striking, authority-driven exchanges. Spradley's ethnographic framework, comprising domain, taxonomic, and componential analysis, was applied to organize the data and reveal relational patterns across the documentary's narrative stages. A total of 515 directive speech acts were identified and validated through an expert-led Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Taxonomic classification shows register variation shaped by situational constraints: of twenty theoretical directive types, only nine emerged, concentrated in tell (28.74%), order (21.55%), and command (17.09%). Componential mapping ties this uneven distribution to recipient design and shifting urgency within the team's temporary hierarchy; its consistency with the team's documented authority structure suggests genuine register constraints rather than mere narrative artifact. Authoritative roles use direct commands to enforce strategic plans during orientation and evaluation phases, while peers rely on implicit "tell" functions in declarative form during crisis resolution, enabled by a shared mental model (SMM) of game mechanics that lets brief utterances be read as explicit tactical moves. Rather than proposing a generalized model, this study offers a structural account of linguistic compression and cognitive alignment in one elite e-sports discourse, suggesting testable hypotheses for future research, such as whether implicit directives correlate with faster response times in peer-to-peer versus hierarchical exchanges.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of AI has created new learning opportunities; however, excessive reliance on AI may produce negative cognitive and ethical consequences, commonly referred to as “brain rot.” This phenomenon includes reduced critical thinking, dependence on automated responses, plagiarism, and vulnerability to misinformation. Such risks may also undermine core Islamic values, particularly tawhid (monotheism), moral responsibility, and academic integrity. These concerns are especially critical for students whose cognitive and moral development is still forming. This study explores the impact of excessive AI by examining how brain-rot symptoms appear in students’ language and attitudes. Using a qualitative design, the study applies CDA integrated with an SFL approach to analyze students’ questionnaire responses as the primary data source. The research was conducted in Jombang, East Java, a region widely known as a religious and educational center. The findings reveal two discourse patterns related to brain-rot symptoms. The first pattern reflects critical awareness of excessive AI, indicated by 21 linguistic and behavioral indicators showing resistance to overreliance on AI. The second pattern reflects support for excessive AI, indicated by 8 indicators showing perceived positive impacts of AI dependence. These patterns demonstrate varying levels of students’ cognitive dependence on AI. This study proposes a linguistic framework for identifying brain-rot symptoms in educational discourse and provides empirical evidence linking excessive AI use with risks to academic integrity and Islamic moral values. The findings highlight the need for educators, policymakers, and religious institutions to promote responsible and balanced AI use in education, particularly for adolescents

Abstract

This study presents a meticulous examination of evaluative language patterns in culinary promotional texts, focusing on the emotive dimensions of communication within the context of Solo City’s culinary tourism discourse. Through a systematic analysis of culinary and restaurant review texts, distinct evaluation patterns and linguistic phenomena are identified and scrutinized. The analysis reveals a predominant emphasis on APPRECIATION aspects, particularly REACTION:IMPACT and REACTION:QUALITY, in conveying evaluations towards culinary entities, highlighting the strategic use of emotive language to captivate reader interest and engagement. However, there exists a notable underutilization of VALUATION aspects, which diminishes the comprehensiveness of the evaluative discourse. Furthermore, the absence of AFFECT and JUDGMENT aspects represents a missed opportunity to enrich the evaluative narrative and build familiarity with readers. Authors adeptly navigate the terrain of evaluative language, employing ATTITUDE aspects such as INTENSIFIERS and ATTITUDINAL LEXIS to imbue their discourse with emotive depth and foster reader engagement. The findings underscore the need for a balanced evaluation approach integrating APPRECIATION, VALUATION, AFFECT, and JUDGMENT aspects to sustain reader interest effectively. Future research directions include exploring cultural influences on evaluative language and investigating linguistic strategies’ effectiveness in culinary promotional texts.

Abstract

Background: Children’s literature, particularly bible stories, plays a crucial role in shaping children’s moral values. However, translation quality in children’s bible stories is often overlooked, impacting accuracy and acceptability. This study examines the translation techniques used in Classic Children’s Bible, assessing their influence on translation quality, particularly accuracy and acceptability.Methodology: This descriptive qualitative study is product-oriented research which was focused on 43 children’s Bible stories. Data were collected from Classic Children’s Bible and its Indonesian translation. They were analyzed through content analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis.Findings: The study found that some techniques influence translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The mostly used techniques (established equivalence, transposition, and modulation) contribute to accuracy and acceptability. In addition, it also found the translator’s effort in maintaining the original story through correction technique. However, accuracy and acceptability are considered to gain a nearly perfect score because of several techniques (discursive creation and deletion). Conclusion: This study confirms the crucial role of translation techniques in ensuring accuracy and acceptability in children’s Bible story translations. Translation techniques such as established equivalence, transposition, and modulation were effective while discursive creation, deletion, and reduction reduced accuracy.Originality: The translation of children’s Bible stories has been studied primarily in terms of methods, techniques, and quality. Howeverseveral studies examined some linguistic parts, not the whole story. In filling the gap, this study investigated the translation techniques in 43 children’s Bible story translations as the whole story.
