The ideational grammatical metaphor is a phenomenon emerging in lexico-grammar which causes new variant construction that is different from its original meaning and grammatical class. This article aims at classifying the translation techiques applied in Jeff Kinney’s Diary of Wimpy Kid novels and also the impact of its application in translating ideational grammatical metaphor which deals with accuracy aspect in translation quality assessment. This research was classified as descriptive-qualitative research with embedded case study research and it used systemic functional linguistics as its approach.. content analysis and focus group discussion were used for obtaining data. The data consisted of linguistic, that is the words representing ideational grammatical metaphors, and translation data, i.e: the analyses of translation techniques and translation accuracy. The techniques were analyzed by using Molina & Albir (2002) theory  whereas the accuracy was assessed based on TQA modified by Nababan, Nuraeni & Sumardiono (2012). Research findings showed that there were eight different translation techniques used for translating ideational grammatical metaphor in the novels. In addition, this average score of translation quality assessment showed that ideational grammatical metaphors in SL have been translated accurately to TL.

Abstract

The Yemeni EFL learners are prone to share their knowledge and views regarding what and how to say. The constraints of combining this expertise have hampered learners’ writing success. Those obstacles can cause learners to make errors. Error Analysis (EA) and Surface Strategy Taxonomy (SST) were used to analyze learners’ linguistic errors. Error causes were also investigated. This research used a qualitative process style to use a case study approach. Ellis’ five-step EA procedure was followed to analyze essay data each comprising 100-350 words or more written by 20 Yemeni EFL eighth semester Arabic-speaking learners at the Department of Education, Sana’a University, Yemen. They were purposely selected as research subjects. It was noticed that omission was the most common error detected in the learners’ writings. Overall, this form of error accounted for 58.71% of 118 cases out of 201 cases. The learners’ common error categories were the number marker, verb-tenses articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreements, and pronouns. This was preceded by addition (20.39%), incorrect formation (15.92%), and word order (4.97%). Intralingual transfer turned out to be the key reason that caused the errors in the learners’ writing. Any of the interlinguistic comparisons was the cause behind the errors. In terms of verb conjugation component, inflectional morpheme, and auxiliary verb abandonment, Arabic and English have different formal definitions. Interlingual transfer and learning context also caused errors. To prevent errors from fossilizing, language instructors should provide continual corrective feedback, and learners should pursue the correct target language form.

Abstract

Background: This study is intended to find out the patterns of CR used in developing phases and stages of narrative and their implication in the genre-based model of language teaching of narratives. The study uses 15 different narratives from two nationally recognized Junior High School English books published by Intan Pariwara and Tiga Serangkai as data sources. Methodology: The narratives are analysed based on their functional engagements of phases and rhetorical functions of stages. Then, the patterns of CR in each phase and stage of the narratives are identified in terms of their types, meanings and roles to develop the phases and stages of narratives. Findings: The findings indicate that the logic of space of external addition and internal similar comparison are used in describing Character, Setting, and Activity in Orientation. Meanwhile, the combination of logic of space and time of external different comparison, external successive time and cause consequence are mainly used to develop phases of Introducing Problem, Developing Problems to Climax in Complication, Evaluation, and phases of Effort 1 to N, Problem Solved in Resolution. Coda, finally, applies internal similar comparison and external successive time to make comments and extract the value of the story. Conclusion: The intricate patterns of CR used in different phases and stages of narrative should be taught delicately in guided and scaffolded instructions through four stages of genre-based model of teaching, namely, BKOF, Modelling, JCT and ICT. Originality: This area of research is under widespread scrutiny and investigation especially conjunctive relationship in each step and phase, as well as the instructional implications of narrative texts.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to evaluate whether the activities of two nationally-recognized English textbooks satisfy the GBA (Genre-Based Approach) and the three aspects of national curriculum, involving knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The data of the research rely on the learning-teaching activities in the two English textbooks used in Class VII, VIII, and IX of Junior High Schools in Indonesia. The sources of data are taken purposively to find five different genres involving description, recount, procedure, narrative, and report. The bases of the evaluation of the book activities are derived from GBA teaching and learning processes which include the completeness, appropriate sequence, and the ampleness of the activities in satisfying the integrations of the three aspects of the national curriculum, GBA activities and language levels activities as realized in general activities. The findings indicate that the activities in the two books can be classified into two patterns. Pattern 1, in general, satisfies the completeness of the GBA and three language levels activities. However, they lack of the appropriate sequences and ampleness of the GBA and language levels and therefore, they miss the integration of the three aspects of curriculum. Pattern 2 do not satisfy all of the three bases of evaluation including completeness, appropriate sequence and ampleness of GBA and language levels activities. Therefore, the activities of the two textbooks need to be redesigned according to the integration of the three aspects of the national curriculum and the completeness, appropriate sequence, and ampleness of the GBA and language levels activities.

Abstract

Communication through online media has increased during the Covid-19 era. This was done to reduce face-to-face interactions to inhibit the potential spread of Covid-19. However, on the other hand, this condition also increases the potential for insulting communication on social media. This article aims to explain the forms, types, and causes of impoliteness in utterances on social media regarding Covid-19. This research is descriptive qualitative. The data used is utterances containing insults about the Covid-19 pandemic on social media. Data comes from social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Youtube. This article uses an observation approach and record method to collect data. Furthermore, the collected data was analyzed based on three things, 1) the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP) to formulate forms of insults, 2) pragmatic politeness theory to see the types of communication violations that result in insults, and 3) cultural themes to explore the factors that cause someone to commit insults. The results of this study are that 1) insults can be classified into 2 categories, slander, and insults, while criticism is an opinion for progress; 2) types of politeness violations in interactions on social media fulfill the 6 elements of the politeness category initiated by Leech; and 3) the cause of humiliation is not only because of hatred but also the humiliation factor that is based on sensation.

Abstract

The novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” is written by Khalid Hosseini, an Afghan American writer, about the lives of Afghans in Afghanistan. Considering the novel as a social semiotic, this paper intends to analyze the politeness strategies used by the two main characters: Mariam, the female protagonist, and Rasheed the male antagonist to conclude whether the female character is more polite or the male character. This paper is qualitative research, and it uses the theoretical framework of Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson. The result of the paper indicates that both the characters used bald on record dominantly followed by positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record; also, the result indicates that women are more polite than men in the novel. It is because the female character used more off record and negative politeness than the male character. This paper adds to our knowledge of how the female and male characters are portrayed in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, and it also suggests that future researchers conduct ethnographic research to conclude about the politeness of the male and female in Afghan Society itself.
