Abstract

Background: This paper seeks to shed some light concerning on evaluative language maintenance and shift at translation phenomenon of online news. Though this translation issue is frequently discussed in academic discourse, little has been concerned on comprehending to what extent the evaluation used in political news has been retained of shifted in their target texts. Methodology: Three political news articles published on ‘The Conversation’ online media were selected for the analysis. For doing so, appraisal system and translation technique theory-based concepts were adopted to guide the analysis as well as the discussion. We employed a noteworthy move in terms of data collection technique, that is focus-group discussion by involving a number of experts who are engaged in the field of linguistics and translation studies. Findings: This research findings can be understood as evaluative language maintenance dominating the data compared to translation shift. Translators attempted to bridge Indonesian readers by rendering some ideologically news, with the aim of knocking language distance down between English and Indonesian texts. Meanwhile, a plenty of translation techniques encourage translator awareness to take position upon rendering ideological news, in case of retaining, altering, as well as omitting the constructed meanings. Conclusion: It is pivotal, as a consequence, to increase news translators’ awareness of understanding attitude constructed in political news. Otherwise, there will be reframing phenomena as the cause of translators’ intervention depriving readers’ rights to understand mass media attitude. Abstract

Background: Although many kinds of research on gender discrimination have been made, empirical research on this matter under the perspective of translation technique is still rare. Therefore, this present research aimed to study gender discrimination in three novels authored by Pramoedya Ananta Toer and how gender discrimination is translated into English. Methodology: This case study was applied in three novels written by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Anak Semua Bangsa, Rumah Kaca, and Jejak Langkah. The data were collected through observations and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings: The results showed that gender discrimination in the three novels was subordination, stereotype, marginalization, workload, and violence. Gender discrimination is translated using established equivalence, explicitation, modulation, paraphrase, implicitation, addition, transposition, reduction, compensation, discursive creation, pure borrowing, deletion, generalization, and particularization. Conclusion: This research reveals that gender discrimination is a phenomenon that commonly occurs in the world community. The research implications are also discussed either empirically or practically at the end of this article.

Abstract

A significant change in education instructional goals effects assessment techniques used to evaluate students’ progress. The root of this phenomenon highly offers to authentic assessment as an alternative assessment. This study deals with authentic assessment implementation and its effects within teaching and learning in the context of Year 7 English students. It employs case study to get a in-depth understanding of the case. Data of the study were gained from deep-interview, observation, and document analysis. While, the data were analyzed by using Interactive model involving data reduction, data displays and conclusions: drawing/verification. The study finds that the relevance of implementation of authentic assessment becomes the main factor of determining its washbacks. Since most the authentic assessment stages undertaken by teachers are in line with National Regulation on how the assessment is designed and implemented, it provides more positive washbacks for both teachers and students such as motivated to be more creative and innovative in teaching and learning process. Nevertheless, the administration of assessment as guided by the government had a negative effect to teachers since it makes them feel overburdened and stressed. Abstract

This article is a translation product oriented study designed to investigate a systemic way of analyzing the divergent of Ideational metafunction realizations in novel graphic translation using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The objectives of this study are to identify divergent of ideational realizations in the translation and what cause them. The study is a descriptive qualitative with an embedded case study. The linguistics data of this study included all the lingual units of translation namely clauses, phrases and words in the monologue and dialogue of the main character in graphic novel V for Vendetta: Europe After Reign by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. The content analysis is used to determine the divergent of Ideational metafunction meanings in translation by comparing the source texts and target texts. The results show the divergent of Ideational realizations in the translation occur in (1) experiential meaning (transitivity structure and lexical items) (2) logical meaning. The divergences in transitivity structure and lexical items are caused by idiom phrases, politeness strategy, and intertextuality. The logical subtype divert in clauses interdependency which caused by two factors namely (1) the translation not maintaining the structure of the source language by downgrading in clause rank and (2) the limitations of the speech balloon format.

Abstract

Abstract. Being the kernel of persuasive devices in a speech, methods and strategies of repertoire rhetoric ascertain the objective of the persuasion. They are unique and their exertion in an individual doing the persuasion may differ from one to another. This paper attempts to reveal the use of methods and strategies of repertoire rhetoric in the presidential inauguration speech of Barack Obama and Donald Trump. The objectives of the study cover the categorization of the strategies and methods of repertoire rhetoric employed by each of them and compare their strategies and methods of rhetoric to unravel the effectiveness of the persuasion in their presidential inauguration speech. This study is based on the qualitative paradigm resorting to multiple case study model. The sampling of data and data source are purposive. The research method implemented the principles of ethnography in terms of data collection and data analysis. The result of the study shows that both Obama and Trump resort to three different methods of rhetoric, with the same propensity towards pathos method. However, it is also found that Obama’s use of logos is almost as high as his use of pathos, leaving Trump’s logos far behind. Even so, the finding of Trump also resorting to logos is contradictory with the common and media belief that Trump solely employs pathos method in all of his remarks. In terms of strategies of rhetoric, both utilize a wide range of options with Obama tending to use syntactic devices and Trump opting for repetition mostly as expected. Keywords: repertoire rhetoric method, repertoire rhetoric strategies, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, presidential inauguration speechAbstrak.

Abstract

The Yemeni EFL learners are prone to share their knowledge and views regarding what and how to say. The constraints of combining this expertise have hampered learners’ writing success. Those obstacles can cause learners to make errors. Error Analysis (EA) and Surface Strategy Taxonomy (SST) were used to analyze learners’ linguistic errors. Error causes were also investigated. This research used a qualitative process style to use a case study approach. Ellis’ five-step EA procedure was followed to analyze essay data each comprising 100-350 words or more written by 20 Yemeni EFL eighth semester Arabic-speaking learners at the Department of Education, Sana’a University, Yemen. They were purposely selected as research subjects. It was noticed that omission was the most common error detected in the learners’ writings. Overall, this form of error accounted for 58.71% of 118 cases out of 201 cases. The learners’ common error categories were the number marker, verb-tenses articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreements, and pronouns. This was preceded by addition (20.39%), incorrect formation (15.92%), and word order (4.97%). Intralingual transfer turned out to be the key reason that caused the errors in the learners’ writing. Any of the interlinguistic comparisons was the cause behind the errors. In terms of verb conjugation component, inflectional morpheme, and auxiliary verb abandonment, Arabic and English have different formal definitions. Interlingual transfer and learning context also caused errors. To prevent errors from fossilizing, language instructors should provide continual corrective feedback, and learners should pursue the correct target language form.
