Abstract

The world of Saudi Arabia in the diaspora experiences of Fuad Abdurahman is written in a novel entitled Pelukis Gurun Pasir (2018). The problems discussed in this study are: (1) the position of subject or author in the narrative structure of the text, (2) the author's relationship with the country of origin, and (3) the voices that appear within the migrant subject in dealing with Saudi Arabian tradition. The theory used is diaspora poetics, which emphasizes the concept of language expression as part of the subject's identity. The object of the research is Pelukis Gurun Pasir (2018) and the author's response to traditions in Saudi Arabia. The data include the narrative structure of the novel’s text, the ideas in the text, the author's biography, and diaspora discourse or social situations. The results show that the image of Saudi Arabian society tends to be evaluated negatively by emphasizing on the chaotic sexuality description of Arabic men, making Saudi Arabia a masculine country. In addition, the author finds tolerant Islamic values in Indonesia, which causes his longing to return to Indonesia.

Abstract

This study intends to show the self-image of Indonesian women who are considered ‘exotic’ in Gijsbert Francis’ novel Tjerita Njai Dasima. The term exotic refers to alienation and othering Europeans raised towards the eastern world, especially Indonesia. The author discusses the image of Indonesian women featured in the novel Tjerita Njai Dasima through the point of view of postcolonial feminists using a qualitative descriptive method by displaying the result based on subject relations and imagery built in the novel. The data in the discussion focuses on the contents of literary works dealing with postcolonial discourse, which brings out the construction of identity towards women based on the reality that women are often seen as symbolic images and objects of male invaders.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract Conventional methods often fail to actively engage students in painting lessons. As a result, students tend to have poor academic performance and low creativity. This study demonstrates that students' creativity and learning outcomes can be improved through the use of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model. The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of the PjBL model on students’ creativity and learning achievement in painting lessons at SMPN 2 Tempel, Yogyakarta. Research methodology was conducted using a quantitative approach with an ex-post facto design. The experimental and control groups consisted of eighth-grade students. Data were collected through documentation, interviews, observation, and analysis of students' art portfolios. The results indicate that the use of PjBL not only helps students achieve better academic performance but also encourages them to be more creative, to perceive the world through a visual lens, and to actively participate in the artistic process. These findings suggest that the project-based learning model can be considered an effective instructional approach that supports the objectives of the Kurikulum Merdeka, particularly in enhancing students' understanding of cultural arts in a meaningful and contextual way.

Abstract

This research examines the power built through the language of objectification and women's resistance in the novel Rara Mendut by Y.B. Mangunwijaya. The author wass not only known as a writer, but also a social fighter who devotes much of his attention to the little people. The story of Rara Mendut is based on historical background that talks about a looted slave who refused to be the concubine of Tumenggung Wiraguna, a Mataram commander. He was described as a brave figure and is not afraid to voice his thoughts and opinions. By using the Sara Mills model of critical discourse analysis approach, the researcher reveals the position and role of women in the text as well as the author's efforts to convey a message through female characters. Even though in the text, women are used as objects to be controlled and exploited, women are shown as subjects who show control within themselves to fight injustice.

The research aimed to analyze pornography discourse in the reception of Enny Arrow’s stencil novels between two millennial men. This was a qualitative research. The research sample focused on two millennial men in Surakarta who read the stencil novels intensively. Data were obtained by interview, and observations were conducted over six months. The research observed two newly recognized millennial men to read and interpret the stencil novels. After that, the research looked at the effect on the social relationships of the participants. The theory used to analyze the data was Normand Holland’s psychoanalytic literary reception. After data analysis process, it is revealed that pornography discourse makes the participants think that the stencil novels are entertaining but can be a taboo subject to discuss with others. Because of the pornography discourse, participants also think that story on the stencil novels should not be used as a general topic conversation.

Abstract

The research aimed to describe the depiction of the female body’s domination as a form of political-cultural legitimacy raised in Sindhunata’s work entitled Putri Cina. Michel Foucault’s theory of discourse was applied as the approach to reveal how sexuality was closely related to power practices. The discourse presented in the novel was dissected by qualitative methods, descriptive qualitative, and interpretative data analysis techniques. The results show that the two main characters of this novel are Chinese women who experienced oppression in Java. The existence of a cultural identity crisis, abjection, passivity, and not subversion represents the figure of alienated women. This perspective is intertwined with how indigenous men perceive Chinese women figures. Sindhunata describes the unequal construction of sexuality between men and women and the discrimination of the Chinese race as repeated during the kingdom era, pre-independence, to the New Order era.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the representation of orientalism in the novel Kereta Semar Lembu by Zaki Yamani (2022), using Edward Said's theory. Orientalism is understood as a discourse created by the West to establish and maintain its superiority over the East. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive method using observe and note technique. The study focuses on three main aspects: (1) discrimination against the local (pribumi) people, (2) the construction of superiority and inferiority between the West and the East, and (3) the practice of domination by Western (Dutch) powers over the Eastern (Indonesian) people. Data were obtained from narrative excerpts in the novel that portray colonial power relations and representational strategies of the East. The analysis shows that colonial domination occurred not only physically, such as through the exploitation of labor and agrarian resources, but also symbolically through language, social systems, education, and cultural values. Indigenous characters are reduced to backward, irrational, and passive figures, while European characters are depicted as symbols of rationality and progress. Thus, the novel can be interpreted as a critique of colonialism and the hegemonic discourse of the West over the East.  Keywords: Orientalism; Colonialism; Discrimination
