Abstract

Research on heavy metals is important to be done to protect consumers from dangerous impact especially on human beings. The purpose of this study was to determine the Lead (Pb) content in Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) taken from Rawa Taliwang Lake. Specifically, the benefit of this study is to protect consumers who consume Tilapia from Lead heavy metal contaminants. Data collection for the tilapia species in this study was carried out in water bodies within the Taliwang Lake area. There were 2 data collection stations, namely on the east and west sides of the lake. Gill nets were used to catch tilapia. Fish samples were caught as many as 4 fish for each station. Next, each fish sample was put into a plastic bag and then stored in a sample box. The fish samples were then analyzed at the West Nusa Tenggara Health, Testing and Calibration Laboratory Center. The data analysis method was carried out by taking muscle tissue from the fish and then analyzing the Pb heavy metal content using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The concentration of Lead in fish tissue was measured after adding concentrated Na2SO4 and CuSO4, which were heated at 350ºC for 2-3 hours until the solution was clear. The conclusion of this study is that the heavy metal content of Pb in Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is <0.5 ppm.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a non-communicable disease whose prevalence continues to increase, including among adolescents. Lack of knowledge and awareness among adolescents about risk factors and prevention of DM can increase the likelihood of developing DM in adulthood. This community service activity aims to optimize the use of leaflets in educating adolescents about diabetes mellitus as an early prevention strategy. The method of implementation includes providing health education using leaflets containing information about DM, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and prevention efforts through the application of a healthy lifestyle. The target of this activity is adolescents living in the Setiaratu Village, Cibeureum District, Tasikmalaya City. This activity was carried out as part of the Tasikmalaya Health Polytechnic's IPTEKS community service program for the community (IbM). The activity was carried out in October 2025. The training results showed that adolescents' knowledge scores about diabetes mellitus increased by 30 points compared to before. Statistically, using the Wilcoxon test, the results showed a difference in the average knowledge scores before and after training, with a significance level of ρ = 0.0001 (ρ < 0.05). It is hoped that after receiving this training, adolescents will contribute to increasing public knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus. Thus, the optimization of leaflets has proven effective as a health education tool in increasing adolescents' awareness and knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus as an early prevention effort.

Abstract

The quality of future human resources is closely linked to the current nutritional status of children. Unhealthy and irregular dietary patterns can lead to undernutrition or overnutrition, affecting overall health and brain development. This study aimed to examine the relationship between dietary patterns and the nutritional status of fifth-grade students in Kediri District. A correlational design with random sampling was conducted in eight schools, involving 221 respondents. Dietary patterns were classified as good (66.5%), fair (24.4%), very good (7.2%), and poor (1.8%). Nutritional status was predominantly normal (96.8%), with 3.2% categorized as overweight, and no cases of underweight. Chi-Square analysis indicated a significant association between dietary patterns and nutritional status (p = 0.009 < 0.05), with a low correlation coefficient (r = 0.224). These findings suggest that dietary patterns are not the sole determinant of nutritional status; factors such as health condition, physical activity, illness frequency, and environmental conditions also contribute. It is recommended to promote healthy eating habits among students and parents, ensure food hygiene in schools, and provide nutritious food options. Future research should consider nutritional education interventions to assess their impact on students’ dietary patterns and nutritional status.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to convert the starches from iles-iles tubers (Amorphophalus campanulatus) and sorghum grains (Sorghum bicolor L) into bioethanol as an alternative energy. Both of these agricultural products contains a high content starches and they do not use as the major foods in Indonesia. To find out the maximum ethanol concentration and yield, both the raw materials were converted to ethanol on various process variables including the concentration of flour substrate solution (100-300 g/L), β-amylase enzyme concentration (0.8 - 6.4 ml/kg of flour ), the  concentration of dry yeast S. cerevisiae (2-15 g), and fermentation time (72-168 hours). The results showed that at the flour substrate concentration of 250 g/L produced the maximum ethanol contents of 100.29 g/L and 95.11 g/L   for iles-iles and sorghum, respectively. Effect of β-amylase enzyme in the saccharification process showed that at concentration  of 3.2 ml/kg  the maximum reducing sugar content of 204.94 g/L and 193.15 g/L  for iles-iles and sorghum substrate, respectively were generated therefore it was corresponding to the maximum ethanol production. The concentration effect of dry yeast S. cerevisiae in the fermentation stage for the iles-iles and sorghum substrate revealed that the maximum ethanol obtained at 5 g yeast activated in 100 ml medium starter resulted the highest ethanol content 100.29 g/L 95.11 g/L for iles-iles and sorghum substrate, respectively. To determine the effect of fermentation time on ethanol yield from iles-iles and sorghum substrate, the fermentation process were performed at 3, 5, and 7 days. The maximum ethanol fermentation was obtained at 5 days fermentation. The ethanol yield is calculated by weight of ethanol is formed (g) divided by the weight of flour (g). Based on the experiment results, conducted, generally the highest ethanol yield of iles-iles was higher than that of sorghum flour. The highest yield (g/g) iles-iles and sorghum flour were 71.25 and 68.92 respectively

Abstract

In an effort to understand the factors influencing healthy eating habits among adolescents, there remains a lack of research that comprehensively examines the relationship between nutritional knowledge and dietary patterns of junior high school students in Mataram City. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of nutritional knowledge and dietary patterns of students at public junior high schools in Mataram City. This study utilized a quantitative framework featuring a descriptive correlational method and a purposive sampling strategy to gather data from 317 seventh-grade pupils across 10 schools in Mataram City. The data were evaluated using the Pearson correlation method and the Chi-Square analysis. The findings revealed a positive and significant link between students' nutritional knowledge and their eating patterns, though the correlation was weak (r = 0.178; p = 0.002). These results suggest that enhancing nutritional knowledge may lead to improved dietary habits, but environmental and social influences are also significant. Further investigation is necessary to gain a deeper understanding of this relationship and to explore how other factors might affect the link between nutritional knowledge and student eating behaviors in a more thorough manner.
