Abstract

Effective principal performance assessment plays a vital role in enhancing school leadership, teacher effectiveness, and student outcomes. However, the implementation of such evaluations often faces various practical challenges. This study investigates the principal assessment process at SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta, aiming to identify key obstacles and propose actionable improvements. A qualitative research design was employed, incorporating in-depth interviews with principals, vice principals, and school supervisors, as well as document analysis. The data were thematically analyzed to uncover recurring issues and patterns in the assessment process. The findings reveal three primary challenges: (1) limited understanding of assessment criteria and components among vice principals, (2) insufficient technical support provided by school supervisors, and (3) lack of structured mentoring during the verification stage. These issues hinder the reliability and effectiveness of the principal evaluation process. To improve the assessment system, the study recommends targeted technical training for school staff, integration of digital tools for efficient data management, and strengthened collaboration among stakeholders involved in the evaluation process. These strategies are expected to enhance the transparency, accuracy, and impact of principal performance assessments. This study contributes to the discourse on educational leadership by identifying critical gaps in current assessment practices and offering practical solutions. Although limited to a single institution, the findings provide a foundation for broader investigations into principal evaluations across different school contexts and their long-term effects on school improvement.

Abstract

This study explores how teachers utilize the Merdeka Mengajar platform and how its use contributes to pedagogical transformation within Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar reform. Employing a qualitative multi-site case study design, the research involved six teachers and two school leaders (n = 8) from two private junior high schools in Central Java. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis conducted over a three-month period (February–April 2024). The data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns of platform use and pedagogical change. The findings reveal three dominant patterns of Merdeka Mengajar utilization: selective adoption for lesson preparation, instrumental use for administrative and reporting tasks, and emerging reflective engagement for professional learning. These patterns were shaped by leadership support, peer collaboration, curriculum alignment, and teachers’ levels of digital literacy. Although challenges such as limited time and infrastructural constraints persisted, the platform supported reflective practice, differentiated instruction, and collegial collaboration among teachers. The study concludes that Merdeka Mengajar has the potential to function as a catalyst for professional growth and pedagogical innovation when supported by strong institutional commitment and continuous mentoring. These findings offer practical insights for strengthening national digital professional development initiatives within equitable education reform.

Abstract

Background: Smoking behaviour among adolescent girls is a growing public health concern, influenced by peers, parental guidance, and social environment. These factors play a critical role in shaping norms and smoking habits. Purpose: To determine the factors related to smoking behavior among adolescent girls. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used with a total population of 76 female adolescents. Data were collected using a structured online questionnaire via Google Forms, measuring smoking behaviour and the influence of peers, parents, and social environment. Univariable analysis described respondent characteristics, while bivariate analysis using the Chi-square test examined the association between variables, with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The study found that 53.9% of respondents were active smokers. Bivariate analysis indicated that peer influence (p = 0.031) and social environment (p = 0.009) were significantly associated with smoking behaviour, whereas parental influence was not statistically significant (p = 0.131). Adolescents with influential peers and a permissive social environment were more likely to smoke. Conclusion: Smoking behaviour among female adolescents is significantly influenced by peers and social environment, while parental influence shows no significant association in this age group. Preventive interventions should focus on strengthening positive social influences and controlling environmental factors to reduce the risk of smoking among adolescent girls. Keywords: Adolescent Girls; Parental Influence; Peer Influence; Smoking Behaviour; Social Environment.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to develop an authentic mathematics assessment for elementary schools in the form of a testlet-based instrument integrated with deep learning principles and the Adiwiyata context within the framework of transformative Islamic education in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Employing basic research with an embedded mixed-methods design, the development process adapted the Plomp model and the instrument development framework of Oreondo and Antonio. Data were collected through teacher needs surveys, expert validation, readability testing, and field trials involving 462 fifth-grade students from elementary schools and Islamic elementary schools. Quantitative analyses included Content Validity Index (CVI), Aiken’s V, Cronbach’s Alpha, Classical Test Theory (CTT), and Item Response Theory (IRT) using the 2-PL Graded Response Model. The results indicate that the developed instruments meet acceptable psychometric standards, with Aiken’s V values ranging from 0.75 to 1.00 and high internal consistency for both the testlet instrument (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.845) and the environmental awareness questionnaire (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.850). Item analysis shows adequate discrimination and a structured progression of difficulty, although one item exhibited low discrimination in the 2-PL GRM, highlighting the importance of IRT-based diagnostics for testlet refinement. Descriptive findings reveal that students demonstrate high levels of environmental awareness, particularly in the knowledge and attitude dimensions, while mathematical achievement remains low on non-routine items. Correlation analysis shows no significant relationship between environmental awareness and mathematical ability. Methodologically, this study contributes a validated and contextually grounded assessment framework that integrates expert judgment, reliability analysis, and complementary CTT–IRT procedures. Theoretically, the findings reconceptualize authentic assessment as a diagnostic bridge rather than a direct causal link between affective values and cognitive performance, demonstrating that environmental concern functions as a potential cognitive resource only when explicitly activated within mathematical tasks.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of sex education on the moral development of students at SMPN 1 Cipaku. The approach used was quantitative with a correlational design, involving 40 students as respondents. Validity and reliability tests showed that the instruments used were valid and reliable (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.838 for understanding sexual education and 0.811 for moral development). The results of Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant and strong relationship between understanding of sexual education and moral development of students (R = 0.720; p < 0.01). The results of simple linear regression showed that understanding of sex education has a significant positive effect on students' moral development with a regression coefficient of 0.546 (p = 0.000). However, barriers were found related to the limited implementation of sex education, which was conducted only once, causing inhomogeneity in students' understanding. This study suggests the need to increase the frequency and quality of sexual education programs that are more structured and sustainable, as well as the active involvement of parents to strengthen moral education at home. In addition, sexuality education should be integrated with moral values that are relevant to students' daily lives. In this way, a sustainable sexuality education program can have a greater impact on the moral formation of students in the future.

Abstract

Curriculum reform has been a widely discussed topic during every change of government, from its name to its implementation, and has generated various reactions. This study aims to examine curriculum management to improve the quality of education in Indonesia, from elementary school through university, rather than at a single level. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. The data sources comprised 41 relevant scientific articles on curriculum management to improve the quality of education in Indonesia for the 2020-2024 period, collected via Google Scholar, Crossref, Scopus, and PubMed using the Publish or Perish tool. The results of the study indicate that curriculum management follows the classic educational management model, which involves four main components: Planning, Organizing, Implementation, and Evaluation (using a model such as CIPP) at all levels of education, resulting in 1) Improved Graduate Quality: Both in terms of academics and character, including spirituality in faith-based schools. 2) More Relevant Learning: With a project approach and student-based learning. 3) Readiness for Change: Schools are better prepared to face the demands of the times, the pandemic, and technology. Challenges include balancing the national and local/religious curricula, and systemic and technical constraints in implementing curriculum management, which is unique to Indonesia. This research can provide a theoretical basis for further curriculum improvements to produce a high-performing generation across all levels of education.
