Abstract

Lambda-cyhalothrin is a toxic insecticide frequently used to control pests in agricultural settings. This insecticide is very toxic to aquatic organisms and can potentially disrupt the balance of metabolism and physiology of farmed fish. Striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) is one of farmed freshwater fish species highly susceptible to being exposed to Lambda-cyhalothrin due to the common shared location of the farming system with agricultural land. This study aimed to determine the acute toxicity effects of Lambda-cyhalothrin and the sub-acute effects on the organs of the striped catfish. The striped catfish was obtained from fish farmers in Bogor, West Java, with an average weight and length of 8.59 ± 0.47 g and 7.52 ± 0.83 cm, respectively. The toxicant material used was Lambda-cyhalothrin insecticide. The tested fish were reared in aquarium sized 30x30x30 cm3 filled with 20 L of water. This study was divided into three stages, i.e., range value test, acute toxicity test (96h-LC50), and sub-acute test. The result showed that 96h-LC50 of Lambda-cyhalothrin on striped catfish was 5.2 µg L-1. The results of the sub-acute test with a treatment level of 2.6 µg L-1 showed minimal growth at 0.688% and a significant impact (P<0.05) on glucose levels, which reached 148.16 mg dL-1. This study concludes that Lambda-cyhalothrin insecticide is detrimental to striped catfish, causing noticeable damage to the gill, intestine, and liver, as evidenced by hyperplasia, proliferation, vacuolization, congestion, fusion, necrosis, cloudy swelling, and inflammation.

Abstract

The Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is one of the most important species in global aquaculture but remains highly vulnerable to bacterial, viral, and environmental stressors. Conventional reliance on antibiotics and chemicals has raised concerns over resistance and sustainability, underscoring the need for eco-friendly alternatives. Alginate, a natural polysaccharide extracted from brown seaweeds such as Sargassum, has emerged as a promising immunostimulant and functional feed additive. Experimental studies show that alginate supplementation enhances non-specific immune responses, including total haemocyte count, phenoloxidase, superoxide dismutase, phagocytic activity, and total plasma protein. At the molecular level, alginate upregulates immune-related genes (e.g., Toll, LGBP, proPO), resulting in higher resistance against Vibrio spp. and White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV). In addition, low molecular weight sodium alginate improves antioxidant activity and stress tolerance under cadmium exposure, while dietary supplementation supports growth performance and feed utilization. From a sustainability perspective, converting Sargassum biomass into alginate aligns with circular economy principles by transforming an abundant, underutilized seaweed into high-value aquafeed additives. This reduces dependency on antibiotics and synthetic chemicals while generating added value for coastal communities. Overall, alginate represents a multifunctional and cost-effective strategy to strengthen shrimp immunity, enhance resilience to pathogens and stressors, and promote environmentally responsible aquaculture production.

Abstract

Ornamental comet fish are highly sought after by Indonesians and command high prices. These fish are generally distributed throughout Indonesia in plastic bags using closed transportation. Efforts are made to minimize stress on the fish and reduce the deterioration of water quality during transportation by using the chemical MS 222. However, awareness of the side effects of chemicals has led to the need for organic alternatives. One such solution is the bandotan leaf (Ageratum conyzoides), which contains anesthetic properties. The extraction method for bandotan leaves involves maceration, which is the mixing of bandotan leaves and 96% ethanol in a ratio of 7.5:1. A single factor was used in the experimental design, consisting of 3 treatments and 3 replications, totaling 9 experimental units, with statistical analysis conducted using ANOVA. Metabolic waste plays a role in reducing water quality and physiological responses, which can be suppressed by adding bandotan leaf extract. The treatment with the addition of bandotan leaf extract showed superior results in increasing the Survival Rate (SR). Therefore, bandotan leaf has been proven effective in supporting in good water quality and physiological responses of fish.

Abstract

Litopenaeus vannamei is a leading aquaculture commodity with high economic value. Efforts to enhance the production of L. vannamei shrimp can be achieved by selecting the type of pond. Culture ponds are crucial in controlling water quality and managing culture waste. Based on these conditions, selecting the appropriate type of pond is essential to improve the production performance of L. vannamei shrimp. This study aimed to analyze the effects of earthen ponds and high density polyethylene (HDPE)-lined ponds on production performance and water quality factors, identify key water quality parameters influencing shrimp yield, and conduct an economic analysis. This study was conducted with two types of ponds, earthen ponds and HDPE-lined ponds. Water quality factors were analyzed weekly using a composite sampling method. Meanwhile, shrimp weight sampling was conducted weekly after 35 days of culture using 30 shrimp for each pond. The results showed that shrimp production performance in HDPE-lined ponds was significantly higher than in earthen ponds. This enhanced production performance was attributed to the more optimal water quality parameters in HDPE-lined ponds, particularly the lower abundance of Cyanophyta. Furthermore, the soil quality in earthen ponds also reduces shrimp survival rates, leading to decreased pond productivity. Although the production costs for HDPE-lined ponds were 17.54% higher than earthen ponds, this investment increases farmers' total revenue by 57.20%. HDPE ponds produce high production performance and healthier water quality, thereby increasing farmers' income and proving economically viable. Keywords: economic, growth, pond type, soil   Abstrak Litopenaeus vannamei merupakan salah satu komoditas unggulan perikanan budidaya yang memiliki nilai ekonomis tinggi. Abstract

Mortality represents a significant challenge in enhancing productivity in intensive vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) farming systems. In ponds with soil bottoms, shrimp mortality is often caused by poor water quality, influenced by fluctuations in physicochemical parameters and changes in phytoplankton communities. This study aims to analyze the correlation between water quality, phytoplankton succession, and shrimp mortality. Pond water samples (E9, E10, F9, F10, and F11) were collected periodically to measure key physicochemical parameters, such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia (NH3), total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), and nitrite (NO2), as well as the abundance and dominance of phytoplankton. The results showed that shrimp mortality positively correlated with plankton abundance (0.57) and the presence of Blue-green Algae (0.43) in the water. Further, descriptively, shrimp mortality followed a similar pattern across several observation ponds, with deaths occurring after the decline or disappearance of Blue-green algae from previous observations. The water quality parameters that correlated with plankton abundance and blue-green algae dominance included TAN, BOD, and turbidity. The transformation in phytoplankton dominance to Blue-green algae can increase BOD levels and produce toxic compounds upon lysis, which may disrupt physiology and lead to shrimp mortality. These results underscore the importance of water quality management and phytoplankton monitoring to reduce vannamei shrimp mortality. Keywords: Blue-green algae, correlation, earthen pond, Vaname shrimp, water quality   Abstrak Kematian merupakan tantangan dalam meningkatkan produktivitas pada kegiatan budidaya udang vaname (Litopenaeus vannamei) dengan sistem intensif. Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of clove oil as a natural anesthetic for Batak fish juveniles during transportation. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatment levels of clove oil: P0 (control/0 ml/l), P1 (0.01 ml/l), P2 (0.02 ml/l), and P3 (0.03 ml/l), each with three replicates. Observed parameters included physiological responses (induction time, recovery time, and behavior), survival rate, and water quality before and after transportation. The results indicated that clove oil significantly affected the physiological responses of Batak fish juveniles, although it did not significantly influence survival rates, which remained above 90% for all treatments. The optimal concentration was 0.01 ml/L, with an average induction time of 64 minutes and recovery time of 1.15 minutes. During transportation, water temperature increased from 27.48 °C to 29.53 °C, pH decreased from 7.22 to 7.17, and dissolved oxygen (DO) decreased from 5.38 mg/l to 5.32 mg/l. These changes remained within the tolerance range of Batak fish juveniles, thus not affecting survival. The findings demonstrate that clove oil effectively reduces physiological stress and maintains water quality, suggesting that it can be recommended as a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly natural anesthetic for transporting Batak fish juveniles.
