Abstract

The goal of this study is to ascertain how the Herringbone technique might be used at SMPN 21 Makassar to enhance students' reading comprehension. Since this study is pre-experimental, it is handled differently. The participants in this study were the eighth-grade students of SMPN 21 Makassar. Using the cluster random sampling approach, a single class—class 8E, which consisted of 27 students—was chosen at random to serve as the study's sample. A written test was administered both before and after therapy as part of the data-gathering procedure. Using IBM SPSS Version 27, the quantitative analysis of the writing test data was conducted to compare the test scores. The paired sample t-test was used to assess the results of the pre-and post-tests. According to the analysis, the average post-test score for the category of "not good" is 58.46, and the average post-test score for the category of "good" is 73.27. According to the study hypothesis, there is a noticeable difference in the reading comprehension of SMPN 21 Makassar students in the 8E class when they apply the Herringbone approach. Thus, it can be said that the 8E grade students at SMPN 21 Makassar benefit from using the Herringbone technique to increase their reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to assess whether the Duolingo application is effective in increasing students’ vocabulary in the English learning process. A pre-experimental study design using a quantitative method was used. 32 pupils from class VII-1 made up the sample, which was chosen by simple random sampling. Pre- and post-questionnaires were used to collect the data. The null hypothesis (HO) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (HA) was accepted when the data analysis showed that students' vocabulary increased significantly when they used the Duolingo application, as evidenced by a t-test value smaller than P (0.000 < 0.05). Therefore, it was determined that the Duolingo program at SMP Negeri 10 Bantimurung's class VII-1 efficiently expands students' vocabulary during the English learning process.

Abstract

This study investigated the perceptions of 10th grade students regarding the use of social media platforms, specifically YouTube and Instagram, in learning English at SMK Negeri 6 Takalar. Social media has gained a significant role in modern educational settings, allowing students to access diverse and engaging language learning materials outside the traditional classroom environment. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten purposively selected students. The interviews aimed to capture students’ experiences and views on integrating social media into their English learning process. The study revealed that Instagram was the most frequently used platform for learning English, while YouTube served as an additional resource to improve various language skills. Students highlighted that both platforms provided rich visual content and contributed to the improvement of their pronunciation, vocabulary, and listening comprehension. Despite the benefits, some challenges emerged such as poor network quality, limited internet access, and the intrusive nature of advertisements on these platforms. Based on the result, it can be concluded that students have positive perception on the use of social media in learning English.
