Abstract

Physics education faces challenges in optimizing the development of high-order thinking skills and science literacy, often being trapped in the transfer of concepts and rote memorization. The integration of cognitive science and science literacy offers a potential solution to address the educational challenges of the 21st century. This research aims to conduct a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to map the current research landscape (2015-2025) that integrates both domains in physics education. The focus is on identifying dominant trends, utilized methodologies, examined cognitive and science literacy aspects, and formulating pedagogical recommendations. The SLR method adheres to PRISMA guidelines, utilizing article searches in the Scopus database and performing bibliometric analysis with VOSviewer. Key findings indicate an increased focus on computational literacy, the role of visualization in understanding abstract concepts, strategies for developing high-order thinking skills through scientific argumentation, the importance of metacognition and epistemic cognition, as well as the effectiveness of learning approaches such as contextual and cognitive conflict-based in facilitating conceptual change. The VOSviewer analysis visualizes research theme clusters, topic evolution, and collaboration networks, reinforcing qualitative findings. The conclusions of this SLR provide significant implications for physics education practices, emphasizing the need for instructional design based on cognitive principles to achieve comprehensive science literacy, and identifying directions for further research.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze global trends in the development of adaptive digital modules based on artificial intelligence (AI) in fluid physics learning through a bibliometric approach. As the 21st-century demand for critical thinking skills and technological understanding grows, AI-based modules are becoming increasingly relevant in supporting differentiated learning. However, a comprehensive mapping of scientific publications in this field remains limited, leading to gaps in understanding current research directions and potential collaboration opportunities. This research uses bibliometric software to identify publication patterns, researcher collaboration networks, and key trends in the development of AI-based physics learning modules. The data used is taken from the Scopus database and includes related publications from 2019 to 2024. The research method involves two main steps: data collection of publications using the keywords "adaptive digital module AND AI AND physics education" and metadata analysis to identify research trends and researcher collaborations. The analysis results show a significant increase in the number of publications on AI-based adaptive learning, particularly from countries such as China, the United States, and India. The findings also indicate that the main research topics include the development of AI technology to support adaptive learning, as well as the effectiveness of digital modules in the context of physics education. This research reveals the importance of international collaboration in the development of AI-based adaptive modules and recommends the use of other bibliometric methods as well as the expansion of database coverage for future research. Furthermore, this research provides important insights for the development of more effective learning strategies through AI technology in physics education.

Abstract

This study presents a bibliometric analysis of research trends in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) within the context of physics learning. The aim is to identify dominant research themes, visualize their development over time, and uncover gaps in the integration of STEM and HOTS in physics education. A total of 147 articles published between 2017 and 2024 were retrieved from the Scopus database, with 96 articles selected for analysis. VOSviewer was used to generate three types of visualizations: network visualization to explore keyword relationships, overlay visualization to track thematic trends over time, and density visualization to examine research concentration. The results reveal that: (1) research on STEM, HOTS, and physics learning has grown significantly, especially since 2021; (2) overlay visualization indicates a shifting research focus toward integrating HOTS through STEM approaches in physics contexts; (3) density mapping shows that the integration of HOTS in STEM-based physics instruction remains relatively underexplored; (4) content analysis highlights that STEM is commonly connected with the development of essential thinking skills, the integration of student-centered learning models such as Project-Based Learning and Problem-Based Learning, and the use of digital learning media; and (5) recent studies have also begun to emphasize the importance of considering affective domains, such as students’ scientific attitudes, motivation, and engagement, in the implementation of STEM-based learning. This study provides a structured overview of the STEM-HOTS research landscape, offering both theoretical insights and practical implications for advancing innovative, skill-oriented physics instruction.

Abstract

The paucity of scientific research focusing on the integration of spectrophotometers within STEM-based physics education highlights a significant gap in the existing literature. This underexplored area holds considerable potential, as the application of spectrophotometric tools in instructional settings may enhance students’ scientific competencies and critical thinking skills. This study aims to address an unresolved research gap by conducting a comprehensive data analysis, combining various analytical techniques to obtain more accurate and comprehensive results regarding the implementation of spectrophotometry in STEM-based physics education. Bibliometric analysis was conducted on articles, conference papers, book chapters, and reviews. The research method used in this study combines quantitative analysis and descriptive methods. The results showed an annual growth rate of 29.24% with an average of 4,568 citations per document. China dominated journal publications with 71 articles, while Indonesia contributed 35 articles. This indicates that, especially in the realm of education, this topic is rarely explored in Indonesia. Data show that research on STEM and spectrophotometry continues to increase, except in 2022, when it experienced a significant decline, followed by a notable increase in 2024, compared to previous years, with 119 documents. Furthermore, WordCloud and co-occurrence network data indicate that STEM and spectrophotometry in physics education are under-researched topics. The topics most frequently researched in these articles are non-educational, such as spectrophotometry for humans, animals, or metabolism. This research recommends that the topic of spectrophotometry in STEM-based physics education should be further explored. Practically, these insights may serve as a foundation for educators and curriculum developers to begin incorporating laboratory tools, such as spectrophotometers, into physics instruction to foster 21st-century skills—particularly scientific literacy, problem-solving, and students' critical thinking abilities.
