Abstract

This research discusses the empirical historical approach in Islamic studies as one of the scientific methods used to understand Islam not only as a normative teaching but also as a historical phenomenon. This approach examines primary and secondary sources through verification of historical data and critical analysis of the socio-cultural context of a period. In modern Islamic studies, this approach is important because it is able to reveal the historical dynamics of the development of Islamic teachings, institutions and thoughts objectively. This research uses a qualitative method based on literature study, with results showing that the empirical historical approach has significant epistemological, methodological, and practical implications. The empirical historical approach in Islamic studies offers a more comprehensive view of Islam as an entity that develops in time and space. This approach does not only focus on theological or normative aspects, but also examines how Islamic teachings are practiced, interpreted and developed according to specific social, political and cultural contexts. By tracing the dynamics of history and using empirical evidence from the past, researchers can describe the transformation of Islamic thought and institutions more objectively and avoid ideological bias. In a methodological context, this approach requires precision in sorting and interpreting historical sources, both primary sources such as manuscripts, official documents, and secondary sources such as the results of previous studies. The data is analyzed critically by considering the socio-cultural background and power relations that influence an event or thought. The results show that the empirical historical approach not only enriches the treasures of Islamic scholarship, but also makes a real contribution in formulating Islamic responses to the challenges of modernity and contemporary social change.

Abstract

This research aims to formulate a conceptual framework for the development of Islamic education teaching materials based on scientific integration in the context of non-formal Islamic education (majelis taklim). The research uses a qualitative approach through literature studies as the main data source, complemented by limited non-participatory observations as contextual supporting data. The data were analyzed descriptive-analytically through thematic categorization and conceptual synthesis. Literature synthesis shows that scientific integration has implications for strengthening conceptual understanding as well as opportunities for developing students' reflective and critical thinking skills. The research output is in the form of integrative teaching material design principles which include relevance, comprehensiveness, integrability, contextuality, and applicability. Integration is positioned as a reconstruction of the relationship between revelation, reason, and reality that enriches the understanding of Islam and strengthens the internalization of Islamic values in modern life. This conceptual framework is expected to be a reference for educators and curriculum developers in designing contextual and integrative Islamic education teaching materials.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of faith (‘aqidah), ethics (akhlaq), and Sufism (tasawwuf) as the foundational elements in cultivating comprehensive religious awareness among Muslims. Employing a qualitative methodology through a literature review, the research delves into the historical, philosophical, and conceptual interplay of these three dimensions and underscores their collective significance in addressing the challenges posed by modernity, secularism, and moral relativism. While ‘aqidah establishes the core beliefs of a Muslim, akhlaq guides social and interpersonal conduct, and tasawwuf nurtures the spiritual depth and inner purification. Historically, the compartmentalization or neglect of one or more of these aspects has resulted in an imbalanced understanding and practice of Islam, often diminishing its transformative potential. This paper argues that a holistic integration of these three pillars is essential for developing a well-rounded Muslim identity—one that is intellectually grounded, ethically responsible, and spiritually conscious. Furthermore, integrative character education rooted in Islamic teachings is presented as a strategic and sustainable model for nurturing rational, moral, and spiritually aware individuals in contemporary contexts. The findings highlight the need to revisit classical Islamic educational frameworks and adapt them to current realities to ensure a meaningful and resilient religious life.

Abstract

Religious moderation is a fundamental concept in Islamic teachings that prioritizes the principles of balance, justice and tolerance, both in religious and social life. In facing the challenges of globalization and the dynamics of modern times such as radicalism, gender inequality, human rights violations, and environmental crises, a moderate approach to religion is an important strategy in maintaining harmony, harmony, and diversity. This research aims to explore the relevance of religious moderation in the contemporary social context by highlighting the importance of reinterpreting Islamic teachings based on the values of gender justice, respect for human rights, and rejection of all forms of violence in the name of religion. Through a study of contemporary Islamic thought and the maqashid sharia approach (the main purpose of sharia), this study reveals that religious moderation can be used as a foundation in the formation of character education, the development of inclusive public policies, and the strengthening of constructive interfaith dialog. This approach not only plays a role in overcoming social polarization, but also in building a just, equal and sustainable society. Thus, religious moderation in Islam is not just a middle-of-the-road attitude, but an active commitment to the values of civilization, social justice and peace. The findings of this study confirm that a moderate and contextualized Islam is able to contribute to a just and sustainable society.

Abstract

Background: Religious moderation has become a strategic issue in education amid rising signs of intolerance and radicalism among adolescents, particularly at the secondary school level, which is a crucial phase in identity formation. Although the value of moderation has been integrated into the Islamic Religious Education curriculum, its implementation remains largely normative and has not yet fostered a deep internalization process within learning practices. Purpose: This study aims to analyse how the values of religious moderation are constructed and internalized in Islamic Religious Education learning and how they contribute to the formation of students’ attitudes. Method: This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design, conducted at a high school in Indonesia. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, and were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Findings: The results indicate that religious moderation is not merely taught as a value but is formed as a pedagogical habitus through the interaction between the curriculum structure, teacher role modelling, and repeated social practices. The internalization process occurs through the mechanisms of role modelling, reflective dialogue, and habituation, resulting in social empathy, self-control, and harmony in diversity. These findings offer a new conceptual contribution by positioning religious moderation as a pedagogical habitus in education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Islamic Personal Development Program (Bina Pribadi Islam, BPI) in fostering students’ religious character and social attitudes in integrated Islamic junior high schools. The research addresses concerns over moral degradation among adolescents and the need for effective character education models grounded in Islamic values. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis to collect data. Data were analyzed through condensation, display, and conclusion drawing to capture the program’s impact comprehensively. The findings indicate that BPI is implemented systematically through mentoring sessions (halaqah), habitual worship practices, and social activities. This approach effectively enhances students’ religious character, including discipline in worship, honesty, and responsibility, while also promoting social attitudes such as cooperation, tolerance, and empathy. Program effectiveness is influenced by mentor competence, student participation, and parental involvement. Key supporting factors include institutional commitment, a conducive religious environment, and teacher role modeling, whereas barriers involve limited time, lack of family integration, and an overemphasis on ritual over social development. The study concludes that BPI represents a holistic and effective Islamic character education model, yet its sustainability and impact can be strengthened through enhanced implementation, stakeholder collaboration, and integration of social development components.

Abstract
