Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan hambatan belajar yang dialami siswa pada konsep penjumlahan dan pengurangan bilangan cacah melalui strategi yang digunakan dalam menyelesaikan soal cerita. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang datanya dikumpulkan menggunakan tes dan wa-wancara. Tes diberikan pada 30 siswa kelas 3 dari dua sekolah yang berbeda. Ja-waban mereka diklasifikasikan berdasarkan jenis kesalahan dan dilakukan wa-wancara untuk mengeksplorasi lebih lanjut bagaimana mereka memperoleh solusi. Sebagai informasi tambahan dilakukan wawancara terbuka dengan guru kelas masing- masing. Ditemukan tiga jenis hambatan belajar yang terjadi. Sikap siswa yang tampak tidak percaya diri dalam menentukan strategi dan tidak yakin dengan apa yang harus dilakukan dengan soal yang berbentuk cerita menunjuk-kan adanya hambatan ontogenik. Keberhasilan siswa menyelesaikan satu situasi dan gagal untuk situasi lain dalam konsep yang sama menunjukkan adanya ham-batan epistemologis. Kegagalan siswa dalam mengenali kata kunci dalam cerita yang menunjukkan situasi penjumlahan atau pengurangan menunjukkan adanya hambatan didaktis.

Abstract

This study aims to understand how pre-service mathematics teachers conduct prospective analyses comprehensively. A qualitative research method with a case study design was used. The participant was Mrs N, a pre-service mathematics teacher who conducted research using DDR methodology in a grade 9 junior high school in Sindang, Majalengka, involving 48 students. Data were collected by analyzing empirical evidence from Mrs. N's prospective analysis process by uncovering the various stages of a prospective analysis. An iterative approach was used to analyze the data by refining the research questions through discussions and regular meetings with Mrs. N. The process ensured adaptability to new insights and understandings from the empirical data. Our findings reveal that the teacher draws upon fundamental philosophical principles from didactical design research, including hermeneutics, phenomenology, and ethnomethodology. By embracing these approaches, the teacher gains valuable insights into conducting research within an interpretive paradigm, allowing for a deeper exploration of the meaning of concepts, the purpose of learning, and the cultural influences that shape the educational process. Additionally, our study sheds light on the emergence of transpositional didactics theory as the prospective teacher delves into understanding the meaning of the geometrics transformation concept.

Abstract

This article discusses the ethnomathematics study of the Kampung Naga community in Tasikmalaya, Indonesia. Ethnomathematics can investigate the application of mathematical notions in these cultural activities. The study explored the forms of ethnomathematics in their ideas and activities in living their daily lives. This study uses an ethnomethodological approach with a realistic ethnographic design to show facts and provide broader meaning. Data were collected from five respondents through in-depth interviews. The study results show that the Kampung Naga community uses the modulo concept to determine the criteria for days that can be used to start various activities, such as building or repairing houses, working, farming, and other social activities. This exploration proves that mathematical concepts are integrated into cultural values ​​in everyday life.

Abstract

The conception of functions, defined as the relationship between magnitudes or sets of ordered pairs, varies among students depending on the contextualization of the concept within the curriculum, notably in school textbooks. This investigation endeavors to scrutinize the approach taken by Indonesian textbooks in introducing the function concept at the lower secondary school level. An eighth-grade mathematics textbook was scrutinized utilizing praxeology, the fundamental construct of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic. The analytical process unfolded in three main phases: examination of the praxis block, analysis of the logos block, and evaluation of the textbook's praxeological structure in collaboration with experts and educators. The examination revealed that the Indonesian textbook organizes functions into three distinct local praxeological frameworks: functions as sets, bijective functions, and functions as relationships between magnitudes. The praxis primarily emphasizes tasks and techniques for functions formulated by sets, shaping the landscape of function learning in Indonesia. Consequently, a notable epistemological gap within logos stems from the disparity between two conceptions of functions: functions as sets and analytical expressions. These findings underscore the necessity for an alternative praxeological arrangement of functions, mainly to bridge the divide between the set-theoretical definition and the analytical expression of a function.

Abstract

Educational research has consistently highlighted that learning obstacles stem not only from the design of learning situations but also from curriculum structures and textbooks, which are pivotal learning resources. Despite the growing body of literature, limited studies focus on the specific challenges posed by the design of learning materials, particularly in early algebra within the Indonesian context. This study addresses the gap by analyzing the grade VII mathematics textbook in the Merdeka Curriculum, with a focus on linear equations with one variable, to uncover learning obstacles in early algebra. Utilizing Didactical Design Research (DDR), a qualitative approach, the research examines the praxeological components of the textbook—tasks (T), techniques (τ), technology (θ), and theory (Θ). The findings indicate three primary categories of learning obstacles: ontogenic, epistemological, and didactic. Notably, the analysis reveals that the design of linear equation content in the textbook is non-systemic and lacks epistemic coherence, posing significant challenges for learners. This study contributes to the understanding of curriculum design by identifying specific obstacles in the Merdeka Curriculum's grade VII mathematics textbook and underscores the need for more systemic and epistemically aligned textbook development. Future research should extend this analysis to other textbooks across various grade levels to determine if these findings are consistent within the broader curriculum framework.

Abstract

In the context of an increasingly data-intensive society, the integration of Computational Thinking (CT) into statistics education is essential to prepare students with the analytical and problem-solving competencies required for navigating complex data environments. Despite growing recognition of its importance, existing pedagogical practices frequently lack systematic didactical frameworks that effectively embed CT within statistical learning, particularly in higher education. Addressing this gap, the present study introduces a novel hypothetical didactical design—termed the Cuboid Framework—which systematically integrates CT components into the learning of descriptive statistics using the R programming language in a Google Colab environment. This research employed the Didactical Design Research (DDR) methodology, emphasizing the prospective and metapedadidactic stages to construct and evaluate the framework. Targeted at third-semester undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory statistics course, the Cuboid Framework aligns with learners’ developmental levels in both statistical reasoning and CT proficiency. The model is organized as a 5 × 4 × 4 structure, comprising five core statistical tasks, four structured didactical situations (action, formulation, validation, and institutionalization), and four CT elements (decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking). Validation procedures included expert review through focus group discussions (FGDs) and an initial classroom implementation followed by metapedadidactic analysis. Findings reveal that the Cuboid Framework fosters a coherent learning progression, enhances students’ engagement in statistical inquiry, and supports the development of CT competencies. Classroom observations confirmed that the intentional design of didactical situations facilitates students’ cognitive adaptation to computational tasks. While preliminary analyses indicate strong theoretical and practical coherence, further retrospective studies and quantitative evaluations are necessary to ascertain the long-term effects on student learning outcomes. This study contributes a structured and theoretically grounded model for CT integration in statistics education, with implications for improving curriculum design and instructional practice in mathematics education. Future research should aim to test the scalability and efficacy of the Cuboid Framework across diverse educational settings.

Abstract

Students’ ability to engage in reversible thinking can enhance their problem- solving skills. Reversible thinking allows students to consider various perspectives, explore different options, and determine the best solution. Therefore, this study aims to describe students’ abilities to solve reversible thinking problems in the context of quadrilaterals, specifically rectangles. This research uses a qualitative method. The participants in this study were three junior high school students from Jambi, Indonesia, who demonstrated sufficient mathematical abilities. This study found that students could solve forward-thinking problems effectively but faced challenges with reversible thinking problems. This difficulty stems from students’ lack of familiarity with problems that require reversible thinking and their struggles with modeling mathematical scenarios from word problems. The study emphasizes the need to introduce more non-routine problems and exercises that encourage the exploration of various problem-solving approaches so that students can develop more flexible thinking skills.         Keywords: reversible thinking, mathematics education, problem-solving, non-routine problem.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i2.pp542-553

Abstract

Making mathematical models involves translating real-life situations into mathematical expressions. This research, conducted in three Bandung schools with 93 students, focuses on iconic and symbolic mathematical models. Findings reveal that students' abilities using these models are below the expected minimum, with symbolic models being more dominant. The score difference may be influenced by the teacher's role, students' experiences, individual abilities, and specific contexts favoring visual understanding. Students face challenges in making mathematical models, including a lack of comprehensive understanding, difficulty identifying variables, creating context-free models, and struggling with relevant visualizations. Additionally, they encounter issues using formulas and interpreting mathematical results when answering questions. In the validation stage, adjusting temporary results to real situations poses challenges. Internal factors contributing to difficulties include a lack of interest, critical limitations, and low self-confidence. External factors like a limited practical experience in making models also play a role. A holistic solution addressing both internal and external factors is essential for students to overcome challenges and enhance their ability to create mathematical models from real-world contexts. The recommended role of the productive struggle learning approach is crucial in assisting students in achieving the expected milestones.

Abstract

Computational thinking skills are systematic ways of thinking that involve formulating a problem, deconstructing the problem, and communicating the solution. The development of students' computational thinking ability is significant; therefore, knowing the obstacles is essential. The purpose of this research is to find out students' learning obstacles in computational thinking. This qualitative research uses a phenomenological approach that describes the meaning of certain concepts related to life experiences for some individuals. The population in this study is one of the high school class XI in Bulukumba district. The subjects in this study were three students in the high, medium, and low categories. Data collection techniques in this study used the following instruments: 1) math test question instrument, 2) interview. The results of this study are (1) ontogenical obstacle in the form of students having difficulty in making models (abstraction stage) because they are wrong in capturing information and do not understand in making mathematical models, (2) epistemological obstacle in the form of students having difficulty in solving problems because the problems given have never been encountered, and (3) didactical obstacle in the form of not understanding the correct writing of permissiveness, this is due to the absence of emphasis on correct permissiveness during learning. This research is expected to help teachers overcome students' computational thinking obstacles.

Abstract

Integrating computational thinking into Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) assessments presents a significant challenge for Indonesian students, particularly in mathematics education. Despite its crucial role in problem-solving, computational thinking has not been widely implemented by students due to the presence of learning obstacles. This study aims to identify the learning obstacles that junior high school students encounter in understanding systems of linear equations in two variables, specifically about their computational thinking abilities. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was employed. Research instruments included a computational thinking test and a semi-structured interview guide. Data were collected from 20 students at a junior high school in Wonosobo Regency, Indonesia. Data analysis consisted of three stages: reduction, display, and conclusion. The findings reveal that students experience three types of learning obstacles—epistemological, ontogenical, and didactical when engaging with systems of linear equations in two variables, indicating that these obstacles hinder the development of their mathematical computational thinking skills.
