Abstract

Mathematical literacy and ethnomathematics are the two main approaches to understanding mathematics in everyday life. Research on the two aspects should be conducted in an integrated manner. It is expected to be a reference for the development of urban mathematics education based on the social requirements of mathematics and individuals' mathematical competence in a cultural group. The primary goal of this research is to describe the Sundanese people's mathematical literacy through an ethnomathematical perspective. The research is focused on living equipment systems and technology, which is one of the elements of the seven universal culture elements. The study employed phenomenographic and ethnomethodological approaches with a realist ethnographic design. Participant observations and interviews were chosen as data collection techniques, while content analysis, triangulation, and identification of patterns were chosen as data analysis techniques. Ethnomathematics in living equipment systems and technology consists of counting, measuring, explaining, discovering, designing, and explaining activities. The results show that the ethnomathematics of the Sundanese community are relevant to the aspects of mathematical literacy consisting of content, context, and mathematical processes. The study's results emphasize that mathematical literacy and ethnomathematics cannot be separated from daily life.

Abstract

Functional thinking (FT) is individual’s cognitive process to identify the relation between variables and is essential for students to learn algebra. However, not much studies addressing the examination of the contents of FT problems within school mathematics textbooks, particularly in Indonesian curriculum. This study aims to describe the mathematics problems presented in junior high school mathematics textbooks of the new Indonesian curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka) based on the FT framework. To reach this aim, the student mathematics textbook published by The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbud) in 2022 was used to conduct the analysis. The textbooks used were seventh and eighth-grade mathematics textbooks. The data was collected by observing the textbook's contents in the algebra domain. The analysis was based on the framework of FT consisting of recursive patterns, covariance, and correspondence. The results show that the FT tasks appear in the learning of algebraic terms, modelling with algebra, and linear functions. Moreover, this study also found that tasks in each topic develop students’ FT at different stages. Tasks in algebraic terms fulfill all FT’s stages in hierarchical order, tasks in modelling with algebra focus on the correspondence stage, and tasks in linear functions include all FT stages but not in chronological order; that is, recursive patterns, correspondence, and then covariation. In conclusion, this study finds that algebraic problems provided by Indonesian textbooks already support students’ FT. Thus, designing more FT tasks and connecting each task to different algebra topics might help students develop their FT.

Abstract

algebra is a fundamental topic in mathematics, particularly emphasized during the junior high school years as an essential subject. In the context of linear equations in one variable, students often struggle with obstacles in basic algebra including variable degrees, variable concepts, coefficients, and constants. However, proficiency in understanding algebraic concepts is significantly lower compared to other areas and skills. As a consequence, this research aimed to explore students' learning obstacles in solving linear equations in one variable in secondary schools based on mathematical proficiency. The research design using the hermeneutic phenomenological approach. This research is a framework of the Didactical Design Research (DDR). DDR is based on two paradigms: the interpretive and the critical paradigms, and it aims to empower students in the context of generating new knowledge as justified true belief. In this study, the researcher delves into the interpretive paradigm. The research subjects involved 46 seventh-grade secondary school students from five different schools across four distinct provinces in Indonesia. The instruments used were test and non-test. The test was done by giving a diagnostic test about linear equation problems, while interviews used the non-test technique. The data collected were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The study findings revealed that students met three types of obstacles in linear equation material, namely ontogenic obstacle, epistemological obstacle and didactical obstacle. However, students faced limited knowledge to solve mathematics problems in one variable, for instance, solving mathematical operations and making modelling problems from real situations deal with linear equations in one variable. Therefore, future research can focus on developing a Didactical Design to reduce this obstacle.

Abstract

This study aims to understand how pre-service mathematics teachers conduct prospective analyses comprehensively. A qualitative research method with a case study design was used. The participant was Mrs N, a pre-service mathematics teacher who conducted research using DDR methodology in a grade 9 junior high school in Sindang, Majalengka, involving 48 students. Data were collected by analyzing empirical evidence from Mrs. N's prospective analysis process by uncovering the various stages of a prospective analysis. An iterative approach was used to analyze the data by refining the research questions through discussions and regular meetings with Mrs. N. The process ensured adaptability to new insights and understandings from the empirical data. Our findings reveal that the teacher draws upon fundamental philosophical principles from didactical design research, including hermeneutics, phenomenology, and ethnomethodology. By embracing these approaches, the teacher gains valuable insights into conducting research within an interpretive paradigm, allowing for a deeper exploration of the meaning of concepts, the purpose of learning, and the cultural influences that shape the educational process. Additionally, our study sheds light on the emergence of transpositional didactics theory as the prospective teacher delves into understanding the meaning of the geometrics transformation concept.
