Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contributions of classical Arab semantic scholars to the history and development of ?Ilm al-Dil?lah and to trace the relevance of their thought to modern semantic theory. Employing a literature review with a qualitative historical-analytical approach, the research examines the major works and ideas of Al-Far?h?d?, S?bawayh, Al-Jurj?n?, and Ibn Far?s through both classical and contemporary sources. The findings reveal that Al-Far?h?d? established the structural foundations of lexicography, S?bawayh expanded the grammatical-semantic dimension, Al-Jurj?n? constructed a relational theory through na?m, and Ibn Far?s developed a historical perspective through ta?awwur al-ma?n?. The intellectual legacy of these four figures played a pivotal role in shaping theories of meaning and lexical indication in modern Arabic linguistics. The study further recommends modifications to contemporary ?Ilm al-Dil?lah to make it more dynamic, integrative, and rooted in classical epistemology. The integration of classical traditions with modern approaches enables ?Ilm al-Dil?lah to evolve as a discipline that is relevant, contextual, and applicable in the fields of linguistics, Qur’anic exegesis, and contemporary Arabic language education.

Abstract

This study is a library research aimed at analyzing the phenomenon of semantic change (extension, narrowing, and shift) in the Arabic language based on both classical and modern theories. The primary source of this research is Tam?m ?assan’s Al-Lughah al-?Arabiyyah: Ma?n?h? wa Mabn?h?, which emphasizes the interrelation between form (mabn?) and meaning (ma?n?) within the structure of Arabic. The findings indicate that semantic change arises not only from internal linguistic processes but is also influenced by socio-cultural, psychological, religious-historical, as well as scientific and technological factors. The implementation of these phenomena can be observed in Qur’anic exegesis and Hadith studies, the compilation of modern dictionaries, digital communication, and contemporary Arabic language teaching. Thus, semantic change reflects the vitality and adaptive capacity of Arabic in responding to the dynamics of time without losing its semantic and historical roots.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of Stephen Ullmann’s theories of referential and structural-cognitive meaning, as presented in Semantics: An Introduction to the Science of Meaning, within the teaching of Ilmu al-Dil?lah wa al-Ma??jim in the Arabic Language Education program. The research method employed is a literature study with a qualitative theoretical-conceptual approach, focusing on publications from 2020–2025. The findings indicate that the referential meaning theory plays a crucial role in training students to connect linguistic expressions with concrete realities, while the structural-cognitive theory enriches students’ understanding of semantic relations, connotations, cognitive associations, and the symbolism of the Arabic language. The integration of these two theories into the curriculum enables a more applicative approach to semantics, moving beyond normative instruction toward contextual and critical learning. Recent literature (Al Fajr et al., 2025; Umar & Hariyadi, 2025) affirms that this integrative approach enhances students’ skills in semantic analysis, cultural sensitivity, and practical competence in interpreting both classical and contemporary Arabic texts. Thus, the application of Ullmann’s theories is expected to serve as a foundation for developing the Ilmu al-Dil?lah wa al-Ma??jim curriculum, thereby strengthening the competencies of Arabic Language Education students comprehensively.

Abstract

Arabic holds a significant position in Indonesian education due to its close association with Islamic teachings and classical Islamic literature. However, Arabic language instruction in higher education remains dominated by grammatical and translation approaches, with limited emphasis on communicative aspects. This study aims to analyze the use of Arabic vocabulary in students’ daily lives and to understand its contextual application in social and academic interactions. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research involved five students from the Arabic Language Education program who actively use Arabic within the campus environment. Data were collected through observation and interviews, and subsequently analyzed through processes of reduction, categorization, and contextual description. The findings reveal that students frequently employ five core vocabulary items: Assalamu’alaikum/Marhaban (greetings), Alhamdulillah (expression of gratitude), Afwan (apology), Syukran (thank you), and Al-Ma’ (water). The use of these expressions illustrates the practical application of applied Arabic linguistics in everyday communication while simultaneously reflecting religious, social, and cultural values internalized through language. Accordingly, context-based Arabic language learning is essential to enhance students’ communicative competence in an effective and meaningful manner.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of interactive media based on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Arabic language learning at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah. The method employed is a literature review, examining various relevant studies and research findings. The results indicate that the use of interactive media such as Wordwall, iSpring, and Canva Edu can enhance students’ interest, motivation, and learning outcomes. These tools support the balanced and enjoyable development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Furthermore, the teacher’s role shifts toward that of a facilitator, guiding students in active learning. Nevertheless, the implementation of ICT still encounters challenges, including limited facilities and teachers’ digital competencies. Training and policy support are therefore required to ensure that the use of interactive media can be optimized and sustained. This study contributes to the development of ICT-based Islamic education literature and provides direction for innovative 21st-century learning in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah.

Abstract

The research addresses the central question of how applied linguistics and translation contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of Arabic language learning in the modern era. The background of the study encompasses the dynamics of language development, the challenges of globalization, and educators’ limitations in adapting to technology and linguistic theories. This study aims to explain the interrelation between applied linguistics and translation, as well as their contribution to improving the quality of the teaching and learning process. Using a qualitative descriptive method through library research, the data were analyzed thematically and comparatively across theories in linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, pedagogy, and translation studies. The findings indicate that applied linguistics provides a scientific foundation that enables teachers to comprehensively understand the structure, meaning, social variation, and acquisition mechanisms of Arabic. Meanwhile, translation serves as a practical application that helps students develop vocabulary, comprehend grammatical structures, enhance analytical skills, and bridge the cultural context between Arabic and Indonesian. The integration of both fields has been shown to support mastery of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and to create more communicative and meaningful learning experiences. These conceptual findings underscore the urgency of integrating applied linguistics and translation in developing Arabic language teaching strategies that are adaptive to learners’ needs and global challenges.

Abstract

This study discusses the dynamics of language use in contemporary Arab society by examining the phenomenon of diglossia and bilingualism from a sociolinguistic perspective. Diglossia refers to the functional division between Modern Standard Arabic (fusha) used in formal domains and local dialects (‘ammiyah) utilized in daily communication. This linguistic situation not only reflects structural differences but also indicates social status, identity, and cultural values within society. Meanwhile, globalization, technological development, and cross-cultural interaction have contributed to the rise of bilingualism, particularly through the widespread use of English in education, media, and professional fields. These conditions further encourage linguistic behaviors such as code-switching and code-mixing in various communication contexts. Through library research, this study highlights how both phenomena shape the evolution of Arabic in the digital era. The findings reveal that Arabic continues to adapt to modern communication needs while maintaining its role as a language of knowledge and religious identity. Therefore, strengthening the use of fusha in education and formal communication is necessary, alongside recognizing the existence of dialects and foreign language influence as part of the living linguistic reality in Arab society today.

Abstract

This study examines Arabic phonology according to Ibn Sina and its relevance to learning in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (Islamic elementary schools). The aim is to understand Ibn Sina’s concept of phonology and its application in teaching Arabic at the elementary level. The method used is library research by reviewing classical and modern sources related to makh?rij al-?ur?f (articulation points of letters) and ?if?t al-?ur?f (characteristics of letters). The results show that Ibn Sina views phonology as a science encompassing the physical, physiological, psychological, and semantic aspects of speech sounds. His scientific and systematic approach is relevant for improving pronunciation, listening, and understanding of sound meanings. Applying this theory in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah can help students develop auditory sensitivity, articulation accuracy, and fluency in speaking Arabic.

Abstract

This article explores the interrelation between morphology (?arf), linguistic synthesis (na?wu), and semantics (dal?lah) within the framework of Fiqh Lughah as the pillars of Arabic linguistics. Using qualitative and analytical methods, it highlights how classical Arabic linguistics provides analogies that are still relevant for modern pedagogy. Morphology is conceptualized as the organic structure of language, synthesis as its systemic architecture, and semantics as its vital energy. These analogies not only illustrate the depth of classical Arabic linguistic thought but also offer a foundation for developing integrative teaching methods in contemporary classrooms. Findings show that traditional pedagogy often focuses excessively on rote memorization of patterns without connecting them to communicative use. By integrating morphology, syntax, and semantics in a holistic manner, modern pedagogy can foster more effective and meaningful Arabic learning. This research contributes to bridging classical scholarship and 21st-century educational needs, especially in the digital era where language learning requires contextual, communicative, and technology-enhanced approaches.
