Abstract

Mathematical reasoning is needed in solving AKM problems. Mathematical reasoning can be shown through geometry material. One of the factors that influence mathematical reasoning is multiple intelligences. Multiple intelligence is a theory presented by Gardner which states that each individual has eight intelligences. The three intelligences that affect the learning process of mathematics are logical-mathematical, linguistic, and visual-spatial intelligence. This study aims to describe students' mathematical reasoning in solving AKM problems about geometry and measurement content viewed from multiple intelligences. This research is qualitative research. The subjects of this study were three senior high school students consisting of one person each who has dominant logical-mathematical, linguistic, and visual-spatial intelligence. Data collection was carried out by providing multiple intelligence questionnaires, AKM geometry and measurements problems, and interviews. The data were analyzed based on the selected mathematical reasoning indicators. The results of the study show that: Student with dominant logical-mathematical intelligence analyzing a problem by giving reasons based on important information using logic. Students with dominant linguistic intelligence and students with dominant visual-spatial intelligence analyzing a problem by giving reasons using the help of an image that represents the shape described in the problems. Each student implementing a strategy to solve the problem according to what was planned in the previous stage by giving reasons based on the results to be obtained. In reflecting on a solution to a problem, each student draws a conclusion by giving reasons based on the results obtained from implementing the strategy and providing evidence by giving reasons based on the calculation results.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the mathematical argument of students in modeling mathematical problems with curved side shapes according to the classification of high and low initial mathematical abilities. This study used the descriptive method with the qualitative approach. Six ninth-grade students from junior high school in Surabaya were given five initial mathematics ability test questions. From the results of the initial mathematics ability test, two subjects were selected with the highest and lowest scores. Data instruments in this study use modeling solid with curved surface problem tests and interviews. The collected data were analyzed based on elements of mathematical argument, that is, claims, evidence, reasoning, and rebuttal. The result shows that subjects with high initial ability can make accurate claims, provide appropriate evidence and reason, and provide evidence to reject the counterclaim. This subject is categorized in level 2 of mathematical argumentation. While the subject with low initial ability cannot make claims accurately, the evidence and reason are unsuitable to support the claim and do not provide evidence and reasons to reject the counterclaim. This subject is categorized in level 1 of mathematical argumentation.

Abstract

Change and relationship problem is considered one of the most challenging PISA problems for students. This qualitative research aims to describe students' error in solving Change and Relationship-PISA problems in terms of self efficacy and the possible scaffolding. The subjects of this study were three students who had low, medium, and high self efficacy. The instrument used was a task-based interview in the form of Change and Relationship-PISA problems. The data were analyzed according to Newman’s Error Analysis and Scaffolding by Anghileri. The results of this study show that students with low self-efficacy experienced error in transformation, proccess skills, and encoding. Students with medium self-efficacy experienced error in proccess skills and encoding. Students with high self-efficacy only met error in encoding. To overcome these error, students with low self-efficacy are given scaffolding in the form of reviewing, explaining, and restructuring. While students with medium and high self-efficacy are given scaffolding in the form of reviewing and restructuring only. Errors made by students in the problem solving process vary for each level of self efficacy, so that the way to overcome with scaffolding also needs to be adjusted.

Abstract

Abstract The addition of flip-worksheets to the statistics curriculum is anticipated to enhance students' capacity for critical thinking. This research is a development research that aims to create a worksheet supported by a Flipbook that is reliable and useful for teaching statistics and could influence students' critical thinking skill. Some exercises and open-ended questions from the provided infographics are included in the Flip-Worksheet. The worksheet uses mean, median, and modus material. The flip-worksheet was created during a formative evaluation stage with 15 junior high school students in the eighth grade. Data was analyzed using walkthroughs, questionnaires, interviews, and document reviews. According to the validation results, Flip-Worksheet is extremely valid in terms of media (89.58%), and it is valid in terms of material (79.43%). The practicality percentage was 90.74%. It is in an interval between 80% - 100% which falls into the very practice category. The N-gain value was 0.71. The grade VIII student's capacity to think critically increased as a result of using the Flip-worksheet which had high criteria. Additionally, based on the document analysis of students' responses about the process of interpretation, analysis, assessment, inference, explanation, and self-regulation on a variety of critical thinking tasks, it may have the effect of developing students' critical thinking abilities. It can be used as a learning medium and can develop critical thinking skills needed in the 21st century. It is hoped that next studies of learning media will be conducted in the future to enhance critical thinking abilities with other technologies.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe an innovative Teacher Professional Development Program (TPDP) to develop pre-service mathematics teachers’ curriculum knowledge. The participants of this study were eighteen pre-service mathematics teachers who have not learned about curriculum as a course in their teacher education program. Two different instruments to measure Pre-Service Teacher Curriculum Knowledge in the domain of statistics and algebra were delivered before and after the TPDP. The innovative TPDP for pre-service teachers in this study considered the current school mathematics curriculum as an entry object of learning. Furthermore, the triangle object such as the development of curriculum among countries, essential mathematics content, as well as designing lessons were elaborated in the model. The developed TPDP and pre-service teachers' lesson designs were described and analyzed qualitatively to see the pre-service teachers' curriculum knowledge. The result of the study shows that there is an improvement in Pre-Service Teachers' Curriculum Knowledge in almost all the components of Curriculum Knowledge, except basic skills and concepts. This implies that for designing a lesson plan, pre-service mathematics teachers need to carefully understand the school mathematics structure as a whole in a brief before the basic competence is reviewed.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate mathematics teacher educators’ (MTE) knowledge in noticing preservice teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) on the hierarchical classification of the quadrilateral. A multiple case study was conducted to analyze the responses of ten MTEs in an online moderated-forum group discussion (M-FGD) from their written work on the MTE-PCK test completed prior to the M-FGD. The PCK test consisted of two tasks: the task that examines MTEs’ knowledge to predict pre-service teachers’ reason in representing the hierarchical classification of quadrilateral in Venn diagrams, and the task that examines MTEs’ knowledge in making a flowchart as a recommendation to mathematics teacher to analyze the validity of quadrilateral classification. Results show that the MTEs indicate two considerations of noticing pre-service teachers’ PCK on the quadrilateral classification: by definition and properties of quadrilaterals and by the visual appearance of quadrilaterals. Despite this, 20% of them were indicated to perform a lack of understanding of the hierarchical classification of quadrilaterals, as indicated by invalid flowcharts of validating the hierarchical classification of the quadrilateral.
