Abstract

Abstract

Conceptual knowledge is a crucial foundation for learning more advanced mathematics, especially when students begin to explore algebraic concepts such as linear equations. However, even students with high mathematical ability may encounter challenges in articulating and transferring conceptual understanding to new contexts. This study aims to describe a seventh-grade student's conceptual knowledge of solving linear equation problems. A qualitative descriptive method was used, involving one student selected based on mathematics ability and communication skill. Data were collected through a conceptual knowledge task and a semi-structured interview. The results indicate that the student demonstrated a solid understanding of unit conversion and the structure of the problem, applied procedures accurately, and showed awareness of relationships among concepts. However, the student struggled to express formal mathematical terminology and encountered difficulty transferring concepts when the problem context was slightly altered. These findings emphasize that even high-performing students may benefit from instructional support that increases flexibility and the depth of conceptual knowledge.

Abstract

Students' mathematical problem-solving skills currently demonstrate a low proficiency, thus necessitating a collaborative approach that effectively integrates cognitive and social abilities in problem resolution. This study aims to describe the process of Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) among students at SMPN 22 Surabaya on the topic of sets, based on the heterogeneity of their mathematical ability, namely the high-medium, high-low, and medium-low groups. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing problem-solving tests, video interaction observations, and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using established CPS indicators and standard problem-solving steps. The findings reveal that the high-medium group successfully executed a complete CPS process characterized by balanced interaction. In contrast, the high-low group exhibited unequal collaboration, marked by the dominance of the high-ability student. Furthermore, the medium-low group experienced significant obstacles in nearly all problem-solving stages and was heavily dependent on researcher assistance. The study concludes that the range of mathematical ability within a group is a determining factor for the success of CPS, as ability gaps impede the necessary exchange of ideas, negotiation of meaning, and joint strategy formulation. The practical implications of this research underscore the importance of mapping student capabilities and reinforcing fundamental concepts prior to implementing CPS in mathematics instruction.

Abstract

Objective: The study aims to identify mathematics anxiety profiles among junior high school students and examine the dominant psychological predictors influencing students’ mathematical problem-solving ability. The study addresses the limitation of previous research that often treats mathematics anxiety as a single emotional barrier by examining variations in students’ anxiety characteristics and their associated predictors. Method: A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed involving 183 seventh-grade students from two public junior high schools in West Surabaya, Indonesia. Quantitative data were collected using a mathematics anxiety questionnaire and a mathematical problem-solving ability test. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were conducted to identify anxiety profiles and determine dominant predictors within each profile. Qualitative data from interviews were analyzed to provide deeper explanations of quantitative findings. Results: The findings revealed that students demonstrated different mathematics anxiety characteristics associated with variations in problem-solving ability. Regression analysis showed that dominant predictors differed across anxiety profiles. Psychological factors emerged as the strongest predictor in Cluster 1 (B = 1.692, p < 0.001), while personality factors became the dominant predictor in Cluster 2 (B = 1.899, p = 0.021). Novelty: The study contributes to mathematics education research by demonstrating that mathematics anxiety should not be viewed as a homogeneous construct. Instead, different anxiety profiles are associated with different dominant predictors, providing implications for developing differentiated learning strategies that support inclusive and quality mathematics education aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4.

Abstract

This research reveals an improvement in mathematical problem-solving skills through the implementation of Problem Based Learning (PBL) model with the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach. The TaRL approach was chosen based on cognitive diagnostic test results showing significant differences between high and low-achieving students. Observations of student learning habits also identified passivity and reluctance to ask questions to teachers about unclear topics, which impacted their learning outcomes. In Cycle I, the researcher conducted planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Students were grouped into three levels (high, medium, and low) based on diagnostic test results. These groups were used to distribute students heterogeneously within one group, with high-achieving students acting as peer tutors for others. The results from Cycle I showed improvement, with 19% of students achieving very high scores, 66% achieving high scores, and the rest achieving medium scores. In Cycle II, after modifying the teaching modules based on Cycle I results, there was a significant improvement in learning outcomes. There were no students with medium-level abilities, and most students achieved high or very high levels of proficiency. These results reflect an enhancement in mathematical problem-solving skills through the PBL model with the TaRL approach.

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (PTK) aims to increase students' active learning in mathematics learning in class VII-B of SMP Negeri 6 Surabaya through the application of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) learning model based on wordwall interactive media. This research was conducted in two cycles, with cycle I using the Problem-Based Learning learning model but not yet based on wordwall interactive media and cycle II using the Problem-Based Learning learning model already based on wordwall interactive media. The research subjects used were 32 students in class VII-B of SMP Negeri 6 Surabaya. Researchers use research objects in the form of students' level of activity and mathematics learning using Problem-Based Learning (PBL) based on wordwall interactive media. This research uses data collection techniques in the form of observation sheets and documentation. The results of the research showed that there was a significant increase in students' learning activity from cycle I to cycle II. In cycle I, the average percentage of students' active learning was 40.83% in the less active category. Meanwhile, in cycle II, the average percentage of students' active learning increased to 83.33% in the very active category. Based on the results and discussion, it can be concluded that the application of the Problem-BasedLearning learning model based on interactive wordwall media has been proven to increase students' active learning in mathematics learning in class VII-B SMP Negeri 6 Surabaya.
