Abstract

Understanding function derivatives shows global patterns of difficulty in comprehension and application. More research is needed to examine students' understanding of APOS theory. This research analyzes prospective mathematics teacher students' understanding of function derivatives based on mathematics anxiety. This study used a qualitative-exploratory design to describe the understanding of function derivatives of prospective mathematics teacher students with APOS theory, considering mathematics anxiety through assignments and interviews. A saturated sample of 26 students was studied. Instruments included math anxiety questionnaires, math ability tests, and function derivative tasks. Data was analyzed using triangulation, peer debriefing, member checking, data reduction, presentation, conclusion, and verification. The study of function derivatives, based on APOS Theory, integrates mental structures and mechanisms like encapsulation and coordination, showing proficiency in simple function derivatives and composition function derivatives but challenges with graphing function derivatives. This research emphasizes the need for teaching strategies that address math anxiety to improve conceptual understanding. It encourages further study of teaching interventions, emotional support, and the long-term impact of math anxiety.

Abstract

There is an ongoing research interest to disclose factors that influence problem-posing performance by involving cross-national backgrounds. This research extends that effort by conducting a comparative analysis on the performance of Indonesian and Hungarian prospective teachers in a problem-posing task. A total of eighty-three prospective teachers from Indonesia and Hungary were asked to pose a problem based on the current calendar. For more in-depth insights, an interview was conducted with a representative participant. The obtained data were analysed quantitatively using Fisher's exact test and qualitatively in nature. Their mathematical background seems to influence the characteristic of their proposed problem and the solution approach they utilized. The typical tasks proposed by Indonesian prospective teachers are exercise and mostly related to arithmetic operations, while those by Hungarian prospective teachers are challenging problems and generally connected to arithmetic sequences. Moreover, in solving their problems, Indonesians tend to show arithmetic reasoning while Hungarians often denote algebraic reasoning. These disparities might be attributed to the types of problems that each group typically encounters during their mathematics lessons.

Abstract

Abstraction is essential to learning mathematics because the mathematical concepts obtained through abstraction will be more meaningful than directly receiving these concepts. This study aims to describe the pre-service teachers' abstraction in constructing relationships among quadrilaterals. This research method was explorative qualitative research with a purposive sampling technique. The subject of this research was a pre-service mathematics teacher who had taken a geometry course. The data analysis techniques used in this study were data condensation, data display, drawing and verifying conclusions. The research results showed that the participant used epistemic actions in an abstraction, such as recognising each quadrilateral type, building-with their properties, constructing relationships among them, and consolidating the abstract results made. Thus, the abstraction in constructing relationships among quadrilaterals can be observed from the epistemic actions: recognising, building-with, constructing, and consolidation, known as RBC+C.

Abstract

A whole attention in didactic situations that might occur/ influence is the strength of didactic engineering as a research design for the development of mathematics learning media. The results of the epistimological obstacle and didactic obstacle analysis of students' creative thinking abilities in geometric material showed a gap between expectations and reality. Based on the results of the a priori analysis, flipbook media is appropriate to be used as one of the media development innovations to improve elementary students' creative thinking skills. Armed with completeness and a clear structure, this media got implementation results that show valid, practical as learning media and and not yet effective because students need time to adapt a new media but it can be seen that there was an increase from the value of presentation student who pass the minimum learning completeness criteria from 0% up to 46%. Based on the results of the a posteriori analysis which is validated by the results of the a priori analysis, it showed that this media can be used to improve students' creative thinking skills in terms of learning outcomes and other didactic phenomena during and after using the media

Abstract

Proportional reasoning is the basis for understanding advanced mathematical concepts, but students in Indonesia still have difficulty in solving problems involving proportions and ratios. This study aims to describe the level of students' proportional reasoning in solving missing value problems with the help of GeoGebra. The research method used was qualitative with a case study approach, involving three students in class IX at one of the public junior high schools in Surabaya. The selection of subjects was based on mathematical ability, the same gender, and good communication skills. The research instruments included the researcher, mathematics ability test, proportional reasoning test, and interview. The results showed that students with high, medium, and low mathematics ability had reached level 2 in solving missing value problems using GeoGebra. The significant difference among the three students lies in the strategy used when solving the problem. This research has implications for students' proportional reasoning using GeoGebra. However, the results of this study do not represent the overall level of proportional reasoning of junior high school students.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the cognitive process employed in problem-solving related to the concept of area conservation for seventh graders. Two students with different mathematical ability were chosen to be the subjects of this research. Each of them was the representative of high achievers and low achievers based on a set of area conservation test. Results indicate that both samples performed more cyclic processes on formulating solution planning, regulating solution part and detecting and correcting error during the problem-solving. However, it was found that the high achiever student performed some processes than those of low achiever. Also, while the high achiever student did not predict any outcomes of his formulated strategies, the low achiever did not carry out the thought process after detecting errors of the initial solution gained. About the concept of area conservation, the finding also reveals that within the samples’ cognitive processes, the use of area formula come first before students decided to look for another strategy such as doing ‘cut-rotate-paste’ for the curved planes, which do not have any direct formula. The possible causes of the results were discussed to derive some recommendation for future studies.

Abstract

This article discusses the analogical reasoning of students' types in solving trigonometric problems based on cognitive styles. This research was conducted at MAN I Probolinggo, eighteen students was asked to complete cognitive style tests and math ability tests. It was found that students' answers can be grouped into two types of cognitive styles, namely systematic and intuitive. From each group, one student was taken to be interviewed with the aim of getting a more detailed explanation of each type of analogical reasoning. The results show that the two types can be explained as follows, first, the type of systematic cognitive style, students can understand the problem given, mention in detail all the information that is known and asked, use all known information about the problem, read and understand the problem, map the structure relational problems, applying a structured way to solve problems that have been planned in advance. In the intuitive cognitive style type, students can understand the problem only by reading the problem once, mention some information that is known about the problem, use the information that is known in the problem, read and understand the problem, apply problem-solving methods. pre-planned but unstructured. Therefore, teachers must encourage and enable students to use analogical reasoning optimally in learning mathematics.

Abstract

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) approach to learning plays an important role in improving teacher competency, learning innovation, and technology use skills. However, the results of an initial survey at Sekolah Indonesia Makkah showed that 44.12% of teachers faced challenges in the form of a lack of training and understanding related to STEM integration. This study involved 34 teachers and aimed to improve their ability to implement STEM-based learning through the Collaborative Professional Development (CPD) approach. The results showed that teachers who participated in CPD activities experienced a significant increase in their understanding and readiness to implement STEM. In addition, teachers began to realize the benefits of STEM learning in developing students' affective, cognitive, and psychomotor aspects, as well as its potential as a means of career guidance. As many as 52.94% of teachers stated that they strongly believed that STEM was important to implement, and 58.82% considered the CPD program to be continued. This study recommends that CPD training be carried out continuously with more applicable and contextual materials. Strengthening collaboration between teachers and the integration of STEM-based curriculum is also needed to support the sustainability and effectiveness of the program in the long term.
