Abstract

More and more problems cannot be solved without collecting and processing data. Therefore, a data processing science called statistics is needed. There are several statistical abilities that an individual needs to have in order to help an individual in solving problems, one of which is statistical reasoning. A person's statistical reasoning can be seen from how a person solves problems. One of the things within a person that can influence the way a person solves problems is learning style. From these several things, it is suspected that there is a connection between learning style and a person's statistical reasoning. Therefore, researchers developed this research with the aim of finding out whether there is a relationship between learning styles and statistical reasoning. This research uses mixed methods, a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods.  The quantitative method used was the One-Way Anova test and the result was that Fratio < Critical F. So all visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles have the same influence on statistical reasoning. Meanwhile, the qualitative method also supports previous results that the statistical reasoning profiles of students with visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles are almost the same

Abstract

Algebraic thinking is a mental activity that involves analyzing relationships between quantities, observing structure, understanding changes, generalizing, modeling, justifying, proving, and predicting based on expressions and symbols that appear in solving algebraic problems. This research describes the algebraic thinking process of field-dependent and field-independent students in solving mathematical problems based on APOS (Action-Process-Object-Scheme) theory. This type of research is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The data in this study consisted of the results of the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), Mathematics Ability Test (TKM), Algebraic Thinking Ability Test (TKBA), and interviews. The research subjects were eighth-grade students consisting of one field-dependent and field-independent student, each with high mathematical abilities and male gender as the control variable. Based on the research that has been carried out, the following results were obtained: (1) Students with a field-dependent cognitive style carry out the Action, Process, Object stages, and fulfill one of the Schemes, and have a tendency towards transformation activities in solving mathematical problems on number pattern material. (2) Students with a field-independent cognitive style carry out the Action, Process, and Object stages, fulfill all Schemes well, and tend towards generalization activities in solving mathematical problems on number pattern material.

Abstract

Dyscalculia is the inability to perform simple numerical calculations in everyday life. However, no one has researched this topic worldwide in about two years. This study aimed to investigate the research trends on dyscalculia through bibliometric studies and research issues related to dyscalculia in the Scopus database starting 2017 to October 2022. The sample consisted of 536 total documents. The results showed that scientific publications on dyscalculia fluctuated. In the next five years, its movements cannot be predicted. The highest number of document types is articles, which is 369. The number of cross-border documents from 2017 to 2022 is in the United States, as many as 75 papers, and in Italy, 74 copies. These two countries are more dominant on the topic of dyscalculia. Furthermore, 536 documents comprising 94.4% of articles were used in English. In general, in research on dyscalculia, researchers produce four out of five significant clusters: patient, approach, task, and grade. However, topics related to dyscalculia and mathematics often studied are deficit students, deficit addition and subtraction, mathematics difficulty, instruction, and primary school. The results can be used to shed light on developing tendencies in dyscalculia investigations and suggest directions for future studies.

Abstract

The Pythagorean Theorem is a basic mathematical concept that is widely applied in various fields, but students often have difficulty understanding and applying it effectively. Understanding students' learning styles, particularly sensing and intuition, can provide valuable insight into their problem-solving approaches and improve teaching strategies. This study aims to describe solving the Pythagorean theorem problem for students with sensing and intuition learning styles. This research uses a qualitative approach involving two class VIII junior high school students in Sidoarjo, each of whom consists of students with sensing and intuition learning styles. Data collection techniques were carried out by administering sensing and intuition learning style questionnaires, mathematical ability tests, problem solving tests, and interviews. The data analysis technique in this research uses learning style questionnaire scoring guidelines, mathematical ability test scoring guidelines, problem solving stage indicators according to Mason et al (2010) which consist of entry, attack and review stages, and data reduction from interviews to explore students' problem solving. The results showed that at the entry stage, students with a sensing learning style focused more on the concrete facts given in the problem, while intuition students tended to see patterns and conceptual relationships. At the attack stage, although both learning styles were able to solve the problem according to initial assumptions, there were similar errors in detailed calculations, especially those involving the concept of special triangle comparisons and root forms. At the review stage, sensing students focused more on checking the answer without looking for alternative solutions, while intuition students tried to explore other possible solutions even though they did not produce valid answers.

Abstract

Understanding function derivatives shows global patterns of difficulty in comprehension and application. More research is needed to examine students' understanding of APOS theory. This research analyzes prospective mathematics teacher students' understanding of function derivatives based on mathematics anxiety. This study used a qualitative-exploratory design to describe the understanding of function derivatives of prospective mathematics teacher students with APOS theory, considering mathematics anxiety through assignments and interviews. A saturated sample of 26 students was studied. Instruments included math anxiety questionnaires, math ability tests, and function derivative tasks. Data was analyzed using triangulation, peer debriefing, member checking, data reduction, presentation, conclusion, and verification. The study of function derivatives, based on APOS Theory, integrates mental structures and mechanisms like encapsulation and coordination, showing proficiency in simple function derivatives and composition function derivatives but challenges with graphing function derivatives. This research emphasizes the need for teaching strategies that address math anxiety to improve conceptual understanding. It encourages further study of teaching interventions, emotional support, and the long-term impact of math anxiety.

Abstract

One of the cultural outcomes of the Madurese community is the traditional tanean lanjang house with a long front yard, designed from several batih (nuclear) families, consisting of a married couple with unmarried children. This study explores geometric concepts of the traditional house to demonstrate how they can be useful for learning mathematics. The descriptive qualitative study described the mathematical concepts found in the tanean lanjang traditional house or settlement in Madura. Furthermore, an ethnographic method was also used to analyze documents, ethnographic notes, and documentation (photos). Data analysis techniques employed an interactive model of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study show that the cultural values and geometric concepts of the tanean lanjang traditional house comprised (1) kinship and brotherhood values, (2) harmony in the household, and (3) strength in the household. The geometric concepts contained in the traditional tanean lanjang house include 2-dimensional shape (i.e., rectangle, trapezoid, triangle), perimeter of 2-dimensional shape, area of 2-dimensional shape, 3- dimensional shape (i.e., triangular prism), the volume of 3-dimensional shape, curve, and the concept of reflection in geometry.
