Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the implementation of uchi ‘ingrup’ soto‘outgrup’ from dialogue between tourism actors and Japanese tourists in Bali. The research site was characterized by formal situation at one of the largest Japanese travel agencies in Bali and by non-formal situations carried out in the Kuta beach in Badung regency. This case study grappled with linguistic data in the form of dialogues between tourism actors and Japanese tourists that was laden with the Uchisoto concept. The data collection technique included recording techniques, reference and record techniques, and in-depth interview techniques with 25 tourism actors in an unstructured way to get data in their natural contexts. The data transcribed were classified according to the context of the speech situation and then analyzed using domain, taxonomy, compound and cultural analysis. The research results highlighted the errors in implementing the Uchisoto concept because of differences in mindset and culture, within both formal and non-formal situations. This is evident from the level of speech markers used which still respect the leaders in front of customers. Despite these mistakes, tourism actors are able to carry out maximum hospitality so Japanese tourists understand this condition. They understand the different concepts of thinking and minimum understanding of these tourism actors. These findings help tourism actors in the Japanese business to use the Uchisoto concept when communicating with Japanese tourists and for tour guides, travel agencies and also language schools to provide trainings related to Japanese language and business culture.

Abstract

This study examines lexical cohesion through repetition in three selected poems from the anthology Aku Ingin Jadi Peluru by Widji Thukul. The aim is to identify the types, functions, and meanings of repetition as linguistic and rhetorical tools for conveying ideological messages and emotional expressions. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed using the distributional method with the Immediate Constituent (IC) technique. The findings reveal three primary types of repetition: anaphora (28.57%), which emphasizes themes and personal reflection; mesodiplosis (14.29%), which highlights irony and alienation; and full repetition (57.14%), which reflects the poet's struggles and existential anxieties. These results demonstrate that repetition in Widji Thukul's poetry serves not only aesthetic purposes but also functions as a strategic tool for social critique and identity exploration. This study contributes to the field of lexical cohesion in Indonesian poetry and provides a foundation for further research on cohesion in other literary works.

Abstract

This article examines the editorials in Koran Tempo and Kompas in representing their ideology of COVID-19 handling in Indonesia. This linguistic research is conducted qualitatively. The data were in the form of Indonesian-language editorial discourse, which discussed the COVID-19 handling in Indonesia. The written research data were taken from national newspapers, namely Koran Tempo and Kompas, and were obtained through the use of listening and note-taking techniques. They were then analyzed using Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis model. The results of the analysis show that there are differences in the representation of ideology in Koran Tempo and Kompas on COVID-19 handling in Indonesia through their editorials that are systematically constructed in microstructure, superstructure, and macrostructure. In the microstructure, ideology is realized through the lexicon, specifically the use of the dominant persona, use of syntactic structures in the form of active-passive sentences, affirmative sentences, and imperative sentences, as well as the use of repetition styles and metaphors. Koran Tempo uses ideological patterns as actions and ideology beliefs in its superstructure. Meanwhile, Kompas uses ideological patterns as systems of thought and systems of action. The difference between the microstructure and the superstructure results in a different macrostructure. Koran Tempo portrays government as the key stakeholder in handling COVID-19 in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Kompas’ editorial was directed at how the handling of COVID-19 was done through communal actions. The Koran Tempo ideology underlines who has a role in handling COVID-19, while the Kompas ideology focuses at what needs to be done in handling COVID-19.

Abstract

There were two objectives of the research. The first was to analyze the word ‘scandal’ from textual analysis (micro-level) and sociocultural analysis (macro-level). To analyze the findings, the research made use of Norman Fairclough’s model as the basis of critical discourse analysis. The research was qualitative, which tended to use inductive as the approach. There were 23 informants who participated in the survey and the FGD. They were selected purposively based on their profession and the workplace areas. The data were the four of Fadli Zon’s tweets containing the word ‘scandal’ and its context, which was available in some online media. Research content based on the textual analysis (microanalysis) shows that the text structure is short and directly conveys Fadli Zon’s criticism or negative assumptions toward any policies of government issues. Besides, the macro analysis indicates Fadli Zon has a dominant power to utter the negative judgments toward the government regarding the position in the government structure as one of the leaders in the Indonesian House of Representative. Substantially, the use of specific terms’ scandal’ overall illustrates the negative opinions and indicating declining trust in the policymakers on certain governmental issues. The use of cynicism, sarcasm, and satire styles colors Fadli Zon’s tweets that are also accompanying the overused of ‘scandal’ word. The analysis based on the dimension of discourse practice (micro-level) indicates that using the word ‘scandal’ in Fadli Zon’s tweets is cynical according to the public opinions. The analysis based on the social-cultural practice dimension (macro-level) indicates that Fadli Zon is one Indonesian politician who is often opposed to the Indonesian government policies.

Abstract

The research aimed to describe dimensions of the Mayor of Surakarta’s (2016-2021) Javanese COVID-19 posters. The research design was qualitative with Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) paradigm. The research data were the two Javanese COVID-19 posters retrieved from the Mayor of Surakarta’s (2016-2021) Instagram account. Data were analyzed in three stages: (1) Analyzing linguistically by paying attention to textual and linguistic elements, (2) Analyzing its discourse process, and (3) Analyzing by examining the sociocultural context. This research finds three dimensions: (1) textual dimension; those posters are constructed by the Javanese language with a persuasive-educative form. Also, there is a relationship between consumers and producers that are interwoven in power and cultural relations. (2) Discourse practice dimension, the process of production, distribution, and consumption, shows that the poster is produced and distributed directly by the ruling institution through social media and is intended to be consumed by Surakarta’s citizens. Also, there are intertextual refers to the central government regulations. (3) Socio-cultural dimension, three levels are found. Those three levels are the situational, institutional, and social levels, which show that the poster is influenced by pandemic situations and contexts beyond the language, such as Surakarta’s cultural context and social conditions. Based on these dimensionalities, the poster is functioned by the Mayor of Surakarta’s Institution to persuade, educate, andinfluence the citizen, also to respond to the COVID-19 situation.

The data collection was in form of online texts made by reporters. The qualitative descriptive method was used in this study. The instrument of this research is observation. The collected data were analyzed using the theories of Martin & Rose and Miles & Huberman. The research showed that the number of positive attitude lexis was more than the negative attitude lexis.  Among 150 Data, 59.3% (89 data out of a total of 150 Data) were positive, and 40.7% were negative (61 data out of 150 data). If the data is calculated in detail, the percentage of the affect was 38% Affect, 8% Judgment, and 54% appreciation.
