Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to analyze the Indonesian language teaching program for foreign speakers organized by the BIPA institution and how cultural integration in language learning enhances students' comprehension and language skills. This study seeks to answer two main questions: (1) What is the structure and implementation of the Indonesian language teaching program in BIPA institutions? (2) How does cultural integration in BIPA learning affect students' language acquisition? This study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing semi-structured interview and documentation as data collection methods. The collected data were analyzed through thematic analysis techniques involving coding, categorization, and interpretation of emerging patterns from interview responses and studied documents. The results show that BIPA programs can be categorized into two main types: (1) Indonesian for Academic Purposes (BIPATA) which focuses on linguistic aspects and their use in academic settings, and (2) Indonesian for Cultural Purposes, which emphasizes hands-on experience in a cultural context. Academic-based programs are conducted through classroom learning with a theoretical approach and language practice in a formal environment. Meanwhile, culture-based programs include activities outside the classroom, such as cultural camps, visits to historical sites and tourist attractions, jumparingan (traditional archery), and cultural workshops. Further analysis reveals that cultural integration in learning not only enriches participants learning experiences but also accelerates language acquisition through direct interaction with Indonesian society and cultural environment. Thus, this study highlights the significance of a culture-based approach in Indonesian language teaching for foreign speakers to enhance their communicative skills and contextual understanding of the language.  Keywords: BIPA, culture, program, foreign learners

Abstract

Social media as a means of public communication has led to an increase in the phenomenon of hate speech, especially on the TikTok platform. This study was triggered by the controversy that hit the non-celebrity food vlogger account @codebluuuu, who received criticism from netizens for writing culinary reviews that were considered unethical. The purpose of this study was to find the types of hate speech, analyze the factors that caused the phenomenon to emerge, and study the social impact of the phenomenon in the context of modern digital culture. A qualitative descriptive method was used to analyze netizen comments that were collected purposively from TikTok video uploads belonging to the @codebluuuu account. To analyze the data, hate speech was put into three categories: harsh criticism, sarcasm, and provocative speech. In addition, this study investigates triggering factors such as public expectations, digital socio-cultural sensitivities, and the impact of social media algorithms. The results show that harsh criticism that attacks the creator personally is the most common type of hate speech. Followed by sarcastic sarcasm and provocative speech that triggers collective reactions. These speeches affect a person's reputation in addition to instilling public stigma and encouraging cancel culture practices. This phenomenon shows that social control has turned into instant collective digital punishment. According to this study, hate speech in food reviews on social media is a reflection of broader social dynamics in digital society rather than just individual expression. Consequently, to use virtual public spaces morally and responsibly, a strong critical understanding and digital literacy are needed.

Abstract

This study investigates how satire and sarcasm serve as pragmatic devices in a single TikTok video by Rian Fahardhi addressing Indonesia’s subsidized fuel policy. It aims to delineate the distinctive linguistic strategies such as ironic framing, metaphorical exaggeration, and mocking lexical choices through which public discontent is articulated, and to assess their implications for digital political discourse. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology within a pragmatic framework, the research analyzes the video’s transcript selected via purposive sampling, focusing on illocutionary acts and impoliteness strategies that breach politeness norms to amplify critique. The findings reveal that satire manifests subtly through rhetorical questions and ironic contrasts, while sarcasm appears more explicitly in stark lexical juxtapositions and mocking tonal shifts (e.g., “it feels like we got beaten and given candy”) tic maneuvers not only expose policy inconsistencies but also leverage TikTok’s multimodal affordances to engage and persuade audiences. The study corroborates Culpeper et al.’s model of impoliteness and demonstrates critical humor’s potency as sociopolitical resistance, underscoring TikTok’s emerging role as a platform for nuanced policy critique.
