Abstract

Hypertension remains a major global health concern, causing numerous deaths worldwide. Approximately 1.13 billion people suffer from hypertension, with an estimated 10.44 million deaths annually due to hypertension and its complications. This study aims to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and actions taken by hypertensive patients in Bukittinggi City. The research was conducted in the Mandiangin Health Center Working Area, involving 17 hypertension patients, one officer responsible for the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) program, and the head of the community health center. This qualitative study used a phenomenological approach, identifying three main themes: knowledge, attitude, and action. The sub-themes include "awareness of hypertension diagnosis," "emotional response to diagnosis," "hypertension management efforts," and "support from health workers." Findings indicate that most patients were unaware of their hypertension diagnosis until they experienced symptoms or were screened during routine checkups. The dominant hypertension management strategies involved seeking treatment at the community health center and maintaining dietary modifications. This study highlights the experiences of hypertensive patients in improving knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral strategies for better hypertension control.

Abstract

Food waste refers to the food discarded at both distribution and consumption stages, posing significant environmental, economic, and social challenges. In Indonesia, this issue is particularly alarming, with an estimated 23-48 million tons of food waste produced annually. Research from China identifies university cafeterias as significant contributors to food waste, underscoring the need for sustainable food waste management strategies within higher education institutions. Universities, as centers of learning and social influence, play a critical role in promoting sustainable practices, including effective food waste management. This study aimed to identify factors influencing food waste management behaviors among university cafeteria tenants using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The method used in this study was a qualitative approach with a case study design. The primary informants consist of 10 university cafeteria tenants who have been operating for at least six months. Informants were selected purposively, based on principles of adequacy and relevance. Data were gathered through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), facilitating in-depth exploration of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control regarding food waste management. Findings reveal that tenants' attitudes towards food waste, social norms, and their perceived control over food management practices all significantly impact their behaviors. This study emphasizes the need for comprehensive educational programs for tenants and university policies to enhance food waste management, ultimately fostering a sustainable campus environment.

Abstract

The success of diabetes prevention is influenced by several factors, including access to information, family support, diet, activity patterns, nutritional status, and self-efficacy. These factors play a significant role in the self-care practices of individuals with diabetes. Self-care refers to actions taken by patients to improve their ability to meet their daily needs independently, enabling them to prevent and manage their illness and adhere to treatment and recommendations provided by healthcare services. This study aims to identify the self-care practices of individuals with diabetes. The research involved 40 respondents diagnosed with diabetes. The average self-care score among diabetic patients in the working area of Banjar Baru Selatan Community Health Center was 68.53, with the lowest score being 39 and the highest score 92. Establishing self-care behaviors as part of a cultural norm requires consistent repetition and routine, to the extent that these behaviors may eventually become secondary needs. One approach to cultivating such habits in individuals with diabetes is to focus on addressing their weaknesses through methods that align with their routines and learning patterns. This strategy can help foster motivation and enthusiasm in managing their condition.

Abstract

All adolescents are entitled to access reproductive health services that are appropriate to their developmental stage, both through formal and non-formal education. Preliminary findings indicate that students generally lack adequate knowledge of reproductive health, with limited information provided both at school and within the family. Teachers report that students tend to feel embarrassed or consider discussions on marriage and reproductive health to be taboo. This study aims to analyze the implementation of adolescent reproductive health education programs at the senior high school level in Ogan Ilir Regency, Indonesia. This qualitative study employed in-depth interviews with teachers, community health center personnel, and family planning counselors, along with two key informants, four student focus group discussions (FGDs) and document analysis. The findings reveal that all schools have made efforts to implement adolescent reproductive health education through teacher-led instruction, the Youth Care Health Services (Pelayanan Kesehatan Peduli Remaja/PKPR) program, and the Youth Information and Counseling Center (Pusat Informasi dan Konseling Remaja/PIK-R) initiative. However, personnel involved in these programs require further training to enhance their knowledge and competencies. While implementation guidelines are available, several adjustments are often made during practice. Key challenges identified include limited budget allocations, insufficient facilities and resources, and restricted accessibility for some adolescents. Although reproductive health education through teacher instruction, PKPR, and PIK-R programs provides significant benefits for adolescents, further efforts are needed to optimize their implementation and outreach.

Abstract

Stoma bags are essential for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with stomas. However, access and affordability in Indonesia remain challenging as the National Health Insurance (NHI) does not fully cover these devices. This study aimed to describe the availability and distribution of stoma bags for patients with CRC in national referral and private hospitals, focusing on outpatient access. A qualitative case study was conducted through observations and in-depth interviews with four enterostomal therapy nurses and six patients across three national referral hospitals and one private hospital in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area, Indonesia. Notably, the availability of stoma bags was limited in both hospital types, especially for outpatients. Most patients faced financial barriers, as they had to purchase stoma bags independently at high prices because of limited hospital supply and lack of NHI coverage. Moreover, hospital policies restricted the number of bags distributed, worsening access issues. These challenges increase stoma-related complication risk and negatively affect patients’ quality of life. Integrating stoma bags into NHI coverage, regulating prices, and improving distribution are recommended to reduce healthcare disparities and improve outcomes for CRC patients, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 3.

Abstract

Excessive use of social media can lead to vulnerability to social media disorder, which is significantly related to the trend of mental health problems among college students. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of social media disorder among college students and to determine the relationship between the number of social media accounts, the total duration of social media use, and social media disorder. This cross-sectional study collected data through an online survey of 201 college students from the class of 2021 in the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia. This study used the Social Media Disorder scaleand univariate and bivariate analysis to analyze the data. The prevalence of social media disorder was 23.9%; 93% of students were classified as high-duration social media users, and 58.2% had more than 10 accounts. Statistically, there was a significant relationship between the number of accounts (p-value= 0.045) and social media disorder. However, there was no significant relationship between the duration of social media use and social media disorder (p-value = 0.560). As a suggestion, the self-regulation factor must be considered an independent variable in predicting social media disorder among college students.

Abstract

Intensi pemberian ASI eksklusif diukur menggunakan kuesioner the Infant Feeding Intentions scale. Sedangkan sikap, norma subjektif dan persepsi kontrol perilaku dinilai menggunakan modifikasi kuesioner Breastfeeding Attrition Prediction Tool. Data dianalisis menggunakan analisis regresi logistik ganda. Sebanyak 61,5% ibu memiliki intensi kuat memberikan ASI eksklusif. Exclusive breastfeeding intention is a mother’s intention to provide her baby only breast milk since the infant was born until at the age of 6 months. Intention in prenatal period is the direct affirmation of exclusive breastfeeding. This study aimed to find out the most dominant factor related to exclusive breastfeeding intention among pregnant women at a mother and child hospital in South Tangerang. A cross-sectional study design was conducted primarily. The samples were 143 pregnant women on their third trimester pregnancy selected by purposive sampling. Intention was measured by the Infant Feeding Intention scale questionnaire. Meanwhile, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control were measured by the modified Breastfeeding Attrition Prediction Tool questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the multivariate logistic regression analysis. It was 61.5% mother had strong exclusive breastfeeding intention. Perceived behavioral control dominantly influenced the exclusive breastfeeding intention (p value = 0.007; Odds Ratio 3.030; 95% CI = 1.361 6.746). The other factors influencing intention were attitude, exposure to exclusive breastfeeding from social media, health workers’ support, previous breastfeeding experience and mothers’ occupation. A mother with high perceived behavioral control has three times more likely to have ‘high exclusive breastfeeding intention’ than those having the low ones.

Abstract

Measles is one of the main causes of global mortality in the under-fives. The existence of groups that reject immunization caused a decrease in immunization coverage. Anti-vaccine messages are widely delivered on social media. Identification of vaccine rejection behavior can be used as the basis to formulate effective program strategies. The design of this study used rapid assessment procedures (RAP). The informants were from two anti-vaccine communities in the Facebook group. In-depth interviews and observations were done for data collection, and data analysis was performed using the Framework Method. The results found that determinants, such as knowledge, beliefs in health behavior and disease prevention, religion, culture, and government policies play a role in shaping informants’ perceptions of vaccines and disease risks. The design factors of vaccination programs and the reliability of vaccine producing sources were found to be inhibiting factors for informants to receive vaccines. Also, experience with vaccines, health workers' role, and lobbying by anti vaccine groups strengthened informants' attitude who initially doubted vaccines, causing them to reject vaccines ultimately. It is suggested to the Ministry of Health to improve vaccination campaigns through social media, conduct vaccine development study, and increase health workers' knowledge related to vaccines and make their communication techniques more effective.

Abstract

Lack of familiarity among the community, medical workers, and administrative staff regarding reproductive health services covered by Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial (BPJS) or the National Health Insurance (NHI) in Indonesia remained a problem. Therefore, this resulted in sub-optimal use of the medical services, as shown by surveys from the Women's Health Foundation for three consecutive years (2015-2017). This qualitative study was conducted with a Rapid Assessment Procedure design in three cities within Indonesia: Padang Pariaman, Manado, and Kupang. Data were collected through IDIs (n = 47informants) and 6 FGDs (7 persons/group). Participants also consisted of NHI RHS users (mothers and young women), administrative officers at health facilities, medical services providers, and officials related to the NHI assistance. Data were managed using NVivo version 2.0 software, accompanied by thematic analysis. The internal barriers in NHI use included inadequate knowledge of RHS covered by NHI, and a culture of shame in informants. External barriers included additional costs for medicines not covered by NHI, the dissatisfaction of health services provided by medical workers, busy work and household activities, and lack of women's role in decision-making within families, which related to reproductive wellness.
