Abstract

Social studies learning in elementary schools plays a crucial role in shaping students' character, social insight, and critical thinking skills. However, its practice is still dominated by lecture methods and lacks contextualization. This study aims to describe the role of teachers in improving the quality of social studies learning through a deep learning approach. The method used is a literature review, analyzing literature related to the concept, implementation, and strategies of deep learning in elementary education. The results of the study indicate that deep learning encourages active student engagement through exploratory, collaborative, and reflective activities. Teachers act as designers, facilitators, and evaluators of learning that emphasizes the process and character development. This approach makes social studies learning more meaningful, contextual, and supports the mastery of 21st-century competencies

Abstract

This study aims to develop an educational monopoly game containing West Javanese culture (Motekar) as an effort to build character, Sundanese cultural literacy, and financial literacy among the younger generation. The low level of understanding among the younger generation of local culture and the lack of awareness of the importance of financial literacy in everyday life form the background of this study. Monopoly games with local wisdom content are an educational and interactive learning medium that can hone students' cultural and financial literacy skills, thereby fostering positive character traits. Using the Research and Development (R&D) approach according to Borg and Gall, this research began with problem identification, literature review, product development, product testing, and product dissemination and implementation. The research questions cover the steps in developing the monopoly media, expert validation, and students' perceptions of the Motekar game. The Motekar game media is expected to not only improve students' understanding of Sundanese cultural and financial literacy but also encourage the formation of positive character in students through regional language and culture learning in line with the principles of education for sustainable development (ESD) in terms of education quality. In addition, Motekar media also has a novel concept and content. In terms of content, Motekar presents a variety of cultures from West Java, while in terms of concept, Motekar presents a strength-based approach so that in the game there are no negative rules such as “going to jail without a specific mistake”.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low financial literacy skills of elementary school students, which stem from the lack of contextual and meaningful learning experiences. Social studies (IPS) instruction tends to remain conventional and does not actively engage students in understanding financial concepts in real-life contexts. Therefore, the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model was implemented to enhance students’ financial literacy through a project involving their roles as sellers and buyers in a Market Class activity. This research aimed to examine the effect of the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model on improving students’ financial literacy skills. The study employed a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The results showed that the implementation of the PjBL model had a significant impact on improving the financial literacy of fourth-grade students. This was evidenced by the paired sample t-test in the experimental class, which yielded a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that H₀ was rejected and Hₐ was accepted. Additionally, the experimental class achieved an average N-Gain score of 0.84 or 84%, with a minimum score of 0.68 and a maximum of 1.00. Meanwhile, the control class had an average N-Gain score of 0.16 or 16%, with scores ranging from 0.04 to 0.54. Thus, the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model proved to be more effective in enhancing students’ financial literacy skills in social studies learning.
