Abstract

This study investigates the interplay between pragmatic constraints and syntactic structures in the English language, emphasizing how context influences language use. Through a qualitative literature review, the research highlights the significant role of pragmatic considerations in shaping syntactic choices. Key findings reveal that speakers modify their syntactic structures to fulfill communicative goals, manage politeness, and emphasize information based on contextual cues. Furthermore, the analysis examines cross-linguistic perspectives, demonstrating the variability of these influences across different languages. The implications of these findings extend to language education, second language acquisition, and computational linguistics. The study concludes with suggestions for future research into the evolving dynamics of syntax and pragmatics in digital communication.   Keywords:Pragmatics, Syntax, English Language, Contextual Meaning, Language Use, Politeness, Cross-linguistic Perspectives, Language Education.

Abstract

This research investigates the role of memes as a communication tool in Indonesia, particularly focusing on their ability to convey social and political criticism through humor. Memes have emerged as a significant medium for expressing public opinion and fostering discourse on national issues. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the study analyzes 15 memes collected from social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. The analysis employs two pragmatic theories: Implicature Theory and Speech Act Theory, to explore the underlying meanings and social implications of these memes. Findings reveal that memes not only entertain but also engage audiences in critical discussions about societal challenges, reflecting a growing trend of using humor as a means of social commentary. This study contributes to the understanding of meme dynamics in non-Western cultures and highlights their potential in shaping public discourse.

Abstract

Pragmatics is the study of how we make sense of what others say when we talk. Meaning links our words with our body language. It can change depending on the circumstance, the relationship between the individuals, and other social variables. Its quick growth has made English a worldwide language that brings people together. English is a language that many people from different places and cultures can speak. In everyday life, people use English in many different situations and talk in many different ways. Speakers need to know about different aspects of pragmatics to avoid misunderstandings when they talk and listen. Using English in fun and interesting ways can help everyone, especially those learning it as a second language, get better at talking and writing. Thomas describes "down to soil competence" as the ability to think carefully about what words mean.. It seems like you just shared a number (524) without any extra information or instructions. Please show me the text you want me to make easier to understand. Being good at business means you can talk clearly and choose the right words for different people and situations. The main goal for anyone teaching English to people who don’t speak it as their first language is to help them get better at it, which can be difficult. Abstract

A study on politeness strategies in classroom discussions highlights their role in fostering respectful and effective communication among university students. Using qualitative methods, the research observes a class of 30 students, focusing on verbal and non-verbal interactions during discussions. Four main politeness strategies are identified based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) framework: positive politeness, negative politeness, off-record strategies, and bald on-record strategies. Positive politeness dominates in collaborative contexts, encouraging rapport and active participation, while negative politeness helps manage disagreements and maintain respect in hierarchical settings. Contextual factors such as cultural background, discussion topics, and classroom dynamics significantly influence the choice of strategies. Abstract

The importance of this research lies in its contribution to the development of education policies, the formulation of more effective teaching strategies, and the guidance for education practitioners. With a better understanding of the factors influencing learning success, this research is expected to be a valuable guide in improving the quality of education in Indonesia to meet global demands and prepare future generations optimally. Observational analysis research is a research approach in which the researcher directly observes certain phenomena or events to gain a deeper understanding. In this context, "observational analysis" refers to the process of analyzing data obtained through direct observation. This method is usually used to explore in-depth information about behavior, interaction, or specific situations in a natural environment. Observational analysis research is often adopted in the fields of psychology, sociology, anthropology, and education (Moleong, 2010). Based on the background description of research related to the analysis of aspects of learning success in Indonesia through observational studies, it can be concluded that education in Indonesia faces complex and diverse challenges. Some obstacles, such as regional disparities, varying teacher quality, access to technology, and the role of parents in education, provide a context that requires serious attention.

Abstract

This study explores how Gen Z perceives the role of Instagram in supporting their English learning in the digital era. As digital natives, Gen Z prefers interactive, visually engaging, and flexible learning experiences, making Instagram an appealing educational platform. This research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews and observations with 15 university students in North Sumatra who actively use Instagram for learning English. The findings reveal that Instagram facilitates enjoyable learning through its visual and interactive features, allowing students to improve their grammar, pronunciation, and writing skills. Additionally, Instagram fosters collaborative learning and engagement through interactive tools such as comments, Reels, and live sessions. However, challenges such as multitasking and cursory content engagement can hinder the development of profound language skills. Instagram's potential as an extra learning resource is highlighted in this study, along with the necessity of its methodical incorporation into teaching methods. The results promote more research on social media optimization for language learning and advance our understanding of digital-based learning.

Abstract

Curriculum development in Indonesia has experienced various changes over time. This change aims to improve the quality of education and adapt it to the needs of society and current developments. However, the impact of these curriculum developments on the quality of education needs to be analyzed critically. In this research, the literature review method was used to collect and analyze data from various related sources regarding curriculum development in Indonesia and its impact on the quality of education. Data was obtained through literature searches, academic journals and other related publications. Curriculum development in Indonesia has experienced several significant changes in the last few decades. Each change is controlled and adjusted by the Minister of Education based on certain experiences and considerations. The main aim of curriculum changes is to improve the quality of education, provide education that is relevant to society's needs, and able to compete at the global level. However, the impact of these curriculum developments can vary. On the one hand, curriculum changes can provide benefits such as increased relevance to the world of work, skills development, and integration of technology in learning. However, on the other hand, curriculum changes can also have negative impacts such as an overly heavy curriculum load, a gap between theoretical and practical subjects, and a lack of training and resources for teachers in implementing the new curriculum. Curriculum changes can also affect the education system in general, including learning methods, evaluation and further curriculum development. Therefore, careful assessment of the impact of curriculum changes on the quality of education needs to be carried out continuously to ensure the desired results are achieved. Curriculum development in Indonesia is an ongoing process in order to improve the quality of education. In making these changes, it is important to consider the impacts, both positive and negative. Evaluation of curriculum changes and close supervision are needed to ensure that the education system is able to provide quality and relevant education for students.
