Abstract

Teaching semantic concepts in tertiary linguistics programs has presented significant challenges for instructors. However, there needs to be a more in-depth exploration of this issue, hindering the understanding of underlying problems that impede effective semantics instruction. This qualitative phenomenological study aims to fill this gap by examining the difficulties faced by 15 experienced linguistics lecturers while teaching semantics courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Through in-depth semi-structured interviews, four major themes emerge, encompassing key pedagogical obstacles. First, students needed help to grasp complex, abstract, and philosophical semantic theories. Secondly, the technical precision required for semantic role labelling and predicate logic translation proved overwhelming for learners. Thirdly, establishing relevance to real-world applications proved to be challenging. Finally, excessive abstractions led to widespread student disengagement, motivation issues, and avoidance. The findings highlight the significant need for instructional design and pedagogical support in tertiary linguistics education to improve semantic teaching ability and learning outcomes. Proposed measures include specialized instructor training, scaffolding complex concepts, leveraging technology, fostering interdisciplinary connections, and enhancing social perceptions of semantics utility. These initiatives aim to develop the sophisticated semantic thinking required for advanced linguistics practice. Further quantitative research is suggested to validate and generalize these qualitative insights, informing nationwide improvements in systemic semantics curriculum.

Abstract

AbstractThe aims are to analyze the culture categories and get the most dominant category presented in the textbook.  Qualitative research design, specifically content analysis of textbooks is employed in the study. The objective examination of the text data's content using a systematic coding process to identify themes or patterns is a research method known as qualitative content analysis (Hsieh and Shannon, 2005, p. 1278). The primary data source for this study is a junior high school English textbook for ninth graders called Interactive English. The researcher employs established categories to analyze the data, including food and drink, locations, art, ceremonies, social behavior, beliefs and values, history, and individuals. These categories were developed by Adoskou, Moran, Dweik, and Al-Sayed in 1990, 2001, and 2015. The textual and visual data are examined based on the cultural categories of source culture, target culture, and worldwide culture. According to the findings, source cultures are shown more frequently than target and other cultures.  It appears in 6 categories, which means that there are 2 categories that do not serve the source culture, namely; belief and value and arts categories. However the source culture is not dominated in each category, but for the percentage, it is the highest percentage of all (41,7%), international culture is 36,1 %, and target culture is 22,2%. The source culture also appears to be the most prevalent category in the interactive English textbook, with a significant number of entries in numerous categories, followed by the target culture and the international culture.   Keywords: international cultural, source cultural, target cultural, international cultural

Abstract

Improving the quality of teaching requires a thorough attention on various critical areas. Anxiety is a significant issue in the classroom, which has an impact on the current subject being discussed. Novice educators often encounter nervousness. Teaching loses its effectiveness in terms of conveying information to pupils. The presence of anxiety throughout the learning process has negative effects on the level of discomfort experienced. Technological advancements can significantly reduce this problem, especially in reducing anxiety throughout the learning process. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of using the PowToon application in reducing teacher anxiety while teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses. This literature study analyzed eight scholarly studies that investigated the effects of incorporating PowToon and other electronic media in educational training. The study's findings indicate that PowToon provides a multitude of advantages for learning. PowToon is highly regarded as a helpful tool for educators due to its ability to facilitate teaching and explanation. Using PowToon helps stimulate students' creativity by mitigating the monotony sometimes associated with uninteresting educational settings. The findings suggest that the use of PowToon media can successfully reduce anxiety, boost instructor confidence, and make the learning process more enjoyable. Hence, this study can provide valuable perspectives for instructors who lack confidence in their pedagogical skills.
