Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of speech acts in Ustadz Adi Hidayat's lecture entitled "The Key to Success and Happiness", with a pragmatic approach through the theory of speech acts developed by J.L. Austin and John Searle. Austin's theory classifies speech acts into three types, namely locution, illocution, and perlocution, which are then further elaborated by Searle into five illocutionary categories: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with content analysis techniques on video transcripts of lectures. The results of the study showed that locutionary acts were used to convey literal information about Islamic values. Illocutionary acts were found in the form of assertive (affirmation), directive (advice and command), expressive (expression of emotion and belief), and interrogative (rhetorical questions). Meanwhile, perlocutionary acts successfully formed psychological and spiritual effects on listeners, such as religious awareness, increased motivation for worship, and a more transcendental orientation to life. These findings confirmed that religious lectures contained rhetorical and pragmatic power that had a significant impact on the audience. This study contributes to enriching the study of pragmatics, especially in the context of Islamic preaching communication.

Abstract

The linguistic richness of the Al-Qur'an makes semantic studies very significantly dominant so that readers are able to obtain the meaning and the point of the sentence. This study aimed to analyze the function of interrogative sentences hidden in each interrogative sentence in Surah Muhammad, which is focusing on this implications for education. This research used a qualitative approach content analysis method. The results of the study showed that each interrogative sentence contained in surah Muhammad has various non-literal meanings, thus affecting the implication in education to be different. This research used a qualitative approach content analysis method. In the perspective of education, the function of interrogative sentences can be interpreted as a way of extracting the implied meaning such as the laws and strategies taught by Allah swt. through the Al-Qur’an so that those rules can be applied in real-life situation and become a place for self-reflection to improve the quality of life so that life will be more meaningful and become an example in behavior. Speaking of education is a national investment that must always undergo continuous renewal and improvement with the global demands that provide increasingly complex challenges. The most fundamental sources of education are the Al-Qur’an and sunnah.

Abstract

Purpose – In recent years, challenges have persisted in the acquisition of Arabic vocabulary among students, and one contributing factor to this issue is the perceived monotony of the existing learning methods. Consequently, the objective of this study is to investigate the impact and efficacy of implementing the PBL method in the process of learning Arabic vocabulary.Method – The research employed an experimental approach with a quasi-experimental design utilizing a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design scheme. The selection of the experimental and control groups did not involve a random process. Data collection encompassed both testing and non-testing methods. Testing involved pre-test and post-test assessments to gauge proficiency in Arabic vocabulary. In parallel, non-test data was gathered through observation and documentation.Findings – The research findings indicated that the PBL approach in Arabic vocabulary learning exerted a substantial impact and demonstrated greater effectiveness when compared to conventional methods. This was substantiated by the N-Gain Score test results, with the PBL method achieving a score of 0.49, categorized as medium, while the conventional methods scored 0.26, falling into the low category. Research Implications – The implications of this research show that the application of this method can significantly improve students' vocabulary understanding. These findings emphasize the importance of a supportive learning environment and the role of students as active agents in learning. A limitation that needs to be considered in this research is that it focuses on only one school with a limited sample. This means that the generalization of the findings only applies to that context.

Abstract

This study investigates the language ideology that informs policy and practice in military educational institutions, with a particular focus on Arabic instruction for military personnel. It explores how beliefs about Arabic as a strategic foreign language are embedded within institutional policies and pedagogical approaches. Employing a qualitative case study at the Language Education and Training Center under the Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense, data were gathered through document analysis, interviews, and classroom observations. The findings indicate that Arabic is ideologically positioned as a language of strategic significance for international defense cooperation, aligning with the national motto Trigatra Bangun Bahasa. The Arabic curriculum, guided by the Ministry of Defense Regulation No. 1 of 2024, reflects an instrumental ideology that links language learning with defense objectives and intercultural competence. This study underscores the dynamic interplay between ideology, policy, and pedagogy in shaping linguistic competence in military settings. Hence, it contributes to broader discussions on how institutional language policies articulate forms of strategic nationalism in multilingual contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study conducts a corpus-based analysis of MSME catalogs to illustrate how the cognitive shortcuts of persuasion techniques can effectively influence the target customer in food and beverage promotion, particularly from a psychological perspective. This qualitative descriptive study investigates a specialized corpus of MSME food and beverage promotions derived from the product catalogs at BRI EXPO (RT) 2025 from 6 categories of the cognitive shortcuts: authority, social proof, consistency, reciprocity, scarcity, and linking to increase social influence by Cialdini’s Principles of Persuasion. The data consists of product descriptions within the food and beverage category, resulting in 6814 tokens. The data is categorized using concordance software Sketch Engine. The data analysis used domain, taxonomic, componential, and cultural theme analysis. The final findings of this research reveal that MSME food and beverage ads predominantly use the cognitive shortcuts of commitment, reciprocity, scarcity, and social proof to persuade consumers linguistically. These shortcuts are often represented through verbs and adjectives emphasizing quality, trust, exclusivity, and community validation. Each product category applies these shortcuts differently, reflecting both market positioning and cultural values. While authority and liking are less frequently used, their inclusion could enhance emotional and credibility-based appeal. It is clear that this study contributes to the marketing corpus, particularly on promotion catalogs of MSMEs.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how interpersonal meaning in Arabic command speech is realized in the film Farha (2021) and how it is transferred into Indonesian subtitles. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research draws on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and directive speech act theory to analyze 117 command clauses taken from the film and its official subtitles. Each clause was examined through the interpersonal categories of mood, obligation, polarity, person, and tenor to assess the strength and equivalence of illocutionary force across languages. The findings indicate a predominant use of imperative mood, high obligation, positive polarity, and second-person forms, reflecting direct and hierarchical communication typical of conflict settings. Overall, the Indonesian subtitles maintain the core interpersonal force of the Arabic source text, though some shifts occur in obligation intensity, command merging, and lexical choices. This study contributes a systematic model for evaluating interpersonal equivalence in Arabic–Indonesian audiovisual translation.

Abstract

The study of subtitle translation in religious animated films has become increasingly significant as it requires not only linguistic equivalence but also the ability to construct pragmatic meaning through the integration of multiple communicative modes. The episode “Bahaya Pamer” from the animation Muhsin and Mahasin serves as an interesting object of analysis because it conveys Islamic moral values of modesty through verbal and visual interactions rich in educational messages. This research analyzes the Arabic–Indonesian subtitle translation strategies and the role of multimodality in constructing pragmatic meaning and supporting the delivery of moral messages. Employing a qualitative approach with content analysis, the study examines eight dialogue segments containing speech acts and multimodal elements encompassing visual, auditory, and gestural dimensions. Drawing upon Speech Act Theory (Searle, 1979), Multimodal Discourse Analysis (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006), and the audiovisual translation strategies model (Díaz Cintas & Remael, 2021), the findings reveal that literal transfer, adaptation, and expansion are dominant strategies used to adjust emotional and cultural contexts of the target audience. The coherence among modes reinforces pragmatic meaning and highlights the relationship between language, moral values, and visual context.
