Abstract

Early childhood education must be designed meaningfully and child-centered to foster creative thinking as a fundamental 21st-century competency. Creative thinking in early childhood is reflected in children’s capacity to generate diverse, flexible, and original ideas, as well as to develop concepts grounded in their learning experiences. The Project Based Learning (PjBL) model is considered relevant for nurturing this competency, as it engages children actively in learning through contextual, project-based activities. When integrated with the Deep Learning approach, instruction extends beyond activity completion to encompass meaning-making, experiential reflection, and purposeful understanding of learning objectives. This study aims to analyze and synthesize findings from prior research on the implementation of the Project Based Learning model integrated with Deep Learning in developing creative thinking ability in early childhood. A qualitative approach employing a literature review method was applied, examining 20 peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2025. The findings reveal that Project Based Learning encourages children to develop ideational fluency, cognitive flexibility, and simple problem-solving skills through meaningful learning experiences. The Deep Learning approach strengthens children’s cognitive processes by emphasizing comprehension, reflection, and the connection between learning experiences and generated ideas. The integration of both approaches has been shown to create learning environments that are not oriented toward a single correct answer, but instead accommodate the diversity of children’s thinking.

Abstract

General Background Early childhood education is increasingly required to respond to digital transformation by integrating technology-based learning experiences that support foundational cognitive skills. Specific Background One emerging approach is plugged coding, which introduces basic programming concepts through digital devices in play-based classroom activities for children aged 5–6 years. Knowledge Gap Despite growing attention to coding in early childhood, limited empirical evidence explains how teacher roles, readiness, and pedagogical strategies shape the development of computational thinking within real classroom contexts, particularly under practical digital constraints. Aims This study aims to examine the implementation of plugged coding learning in early childhood education and to analyze the role of teachers in supporting children’s computational thinking development. Results Using a descriptive qualitative case study at a public kindergarten, findings show that children demonstrated indicators of computational thinking, including sequencing, pattern recognition, and initial debugging, while teachers employed scaffolding strategies such as prompting questions, visual demonstrations, and guided reflection. However, variations in teacher readiness and challenges related to device availability, technical issues, and screen-time management were evident. Novelty This study provides an in-depth qualitative account of teacher-mediated plugged coding practices aligned with a play-based curriculum in an authentic early childhood setting. Implications The findings underscore the importance of continuous teacher training, adequate digital infrastructure, and pedagogically appropriate learning media to support sustainable integration of plugged coding in early childhood education. Highlights: Children demonstrated sequencing, pattern recognition, and basic error correction during technology-supported activities. Pedagogical scaffolding and play-based design were central to guiding learning processes. Limited devices and teacher digital readiness shaped classroom implementation strategies. Abstract

Abstract

Peer guidance is a method that provides opportunities for students to share the students’ knowledge with their peers and help their peers based on the skills the students have. Tutors are given the responsibility of helping the students in learning when they encounter difficulties in learning. The relationship between the students and their peers is closer than the teacher and the students and something that students are given to their peers usually could give a better effect than not given since the language used was easy to understand by using their own language. Peers refer to close friends or best friends. Qualitative research methodsdescribed in this article are used to know in detail the events experienced by the subjects either descriptively or thoroughly in the form of sentences. The method used was very effective for students and the teacher in which students were not bored and the teacher was not monotonous in teaching. The factor that affects peer guidance came from the same age level, which allowed children to have the same interest, talks, and activities in order to encourage friendship relationships with peers. Active learning is an activity in which students directly, intellectually, and emotionally play an important role and participate actively in learning. Active learning is an active learning system that refers to independent learning. The inhibiting factor and difficulty frequently occurred in active learning are how to solve the differences on the student characteristics.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the experiences of children, parents, and teachers in early childhood education coloring competitions, as well as the meanings constructed within these practices. The study used a qualitative approach based on narrative inquiry. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis to identify patterns of meaning across participants’ narratives. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation conducted during a coloring competition event held in Surabaya. The participants consisted of six children aged 4-6 years, five parents, and three teachers or organizers selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis followed Braun and Clarke’s six phases: familiarization, coding, theme generation, theme review, theme definition and naming, and report writing. The findings indicate that parents’ motivations range from recreational to competitive orientations. Teachers and organizers tend to maintain coloring competitions for practical reasons, while children’s responses range from enthusiasm to pressure. These findings suggest that coloring competitions serve as a social practice that shapes children’s experiences within a competitive value framework. This study offers a critical perspective on art practices in early childhood education. In practice, it suggests reorienting art activities toward more appreciative formats, such as open-ended drawing festivals that allow children to express themselves without competitive pressure.
