Abstract

It is widely believed that L2 learners who have positive attitudes towards the target culture and its people are likely to learn the target language more effectively than those who do not possess such attitudes. As technology continues to be increasingly integrated into language learning, this article aims to explore EFL students' attitudes towards technology acceptance via Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), as well as the potential advantages of VLE in the EFL classroom. A quantitative approach was employed in this study, which involved 30 students from English language education departments at a private university in Indonesia. The students' computer attitudes were assessed using a Likert scale questionnaire with four factors, including affective, perceived usefulness, perceived control, and behavioural intention. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) developed by Davis (1989) was utilized as the framework to further examine these factors. The results indicated that the students had a positive attitude towards the Computer Attitude Scale (CAS) factors, which were categorized into affective, perceived usefulness, perceived control, and behavioural intention. The implications of each of these categories in the framework are discussed in relation to behaviourism theory.

There needs to be more understanding and knowledge about managing the students and classrooms with diverse student behaviour to solve the problems, particularly when identifying students' problems and understanding their different characteristics. However, this study explored teacher classroom management strategies in teaching speaking classes, especially in secondary schools. This study aims to (1) explore and describe the classroom management used by English teachers in teaching speaking. (2) find out the teacher strategy used to deal with the students' problems during classroom management's teaching and learning speaking process. (3) examine the impact of classroom management strategy in teaching practice. This study uses semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis to collect the data. The data findings reveal that teachers have different ways of dealing with different classroom situations based on their experiences and understanding, especially in speaking classes. Most of them claim to take action on how to respond to students' problems, such as understanding classroom management strategies, organizing, problem-solving, and applying teaching strategies. These strategies have a positive impact on learning engagement in the classroom, such as the students being more interested in learning English lessons, obeying the rules, talking actively, and having motivation.

Abstract

Writing skill is one of the difficult skills to acquire in learning a second language. Therefore, the feedback that the students receive from the teachers should be understandable and improve students’ writing skills. This study examines the teachers’ experiences in giving feedback on students’ writing performance through a sociocultural perspective. The participants of this study were 8 English teachers of junior and senior high schools in Padangsidimpuan, North Sumatra. The data were collected through online interviews and analyzed in a thematic approach by transcribing, coding, categorizing, and interpreting. The result shows that teachers prefer to use teacher-student conferencing in giving writing feedback since joint participation and transaction occur in the learning process. It is compatible with the principle of the sociocultural approach. In addition, teachers are more concerned about students’ grammatical errors rather than structure and content. It is due to students finding it difficult to implement the grammatical rules into their writings. Furthermore, unfocused corrective feedback points out a range of error types. However, the strategy is hard to implement for students with lower proficiency levels.

Abstract

Project-based learning (PjBL) integrated with information and communication technology (ICT) has emerged as a promising learning model to nurture students' 4Cs skills (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity) in the EFL classroom. Therefore, this study aims to explore the perceived benefits and challenges of integrating PjBL with ICT in nurturing students' 4Cs skills in EFL classrooms. The research employed a qualitative single case study design involving semi-structured interviews with four EFL teachers and focus group discussions with twelve students. Thematic analysis was conducted on the collected data to identify emerging themes and patterns. The findings revealed several perceived benefits, including improved oral and written communication abilities, enhanced individual and group collaboration, clearly defined and implemented problems and solutions, and fostered creative idea generation, selection, and presentation. However, challenges such as time management issues, technical problems, physical and psychological burdens, and lack of sufficient teacher training and scaffolding were also identified. The study suggests that integrating PjBL with ICT can nurture the 4Cs skills essential for success in the 21st century. However, effective implementation necessitates resolving the highlighted issues, which include adequate teacher training, resource allocation, and support mechanisms. The implications of the research extend beyond the EFL classroom, showing the potential of this pedagogical model to cultivate crucial 21st-century skills across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

Translanguaging offers potential significance in assisting EFL students’ engagement in L2 communication, making it valuable to investigate whether students’ perception of translanguaging correlates with their willingness to communicate in a second language. This mixed-methods study explores the relationship between students’ perception and L2 willingness to communicate in classroom communicative settings. 65 participants from two universities enrolled in an English education program participated in this study. The quantitative data were collected using 5-Likert scale questionnaires and qualitative data through in-depth interviews with subset participants. The quantitative data, including descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analysis, were formulated in SPSS 26. Meanwhile, the interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings showed that students’ perception of translanguaging correlates significantly and positively to their L2 WTC (r = .587). Based on the qualitative data, key themes related to the significance of translanguaging, such as facilitation of understanding, self-confidence improvement, reduced anxiety, and promotion of a positive classroom environment emerged as factors contributing to the students’ increased L2 WTC. These findings suggest that students’ perception of translanguaging influences their attitudes toward L2 communication, leading to a decreased or increased WTC level. Thus, translanguaging should be encouraged as an alternative strategy in L2 classrooms to enhance communication in EFL settings, particularly by maximizing L2 understanding and fostering an emotionally safe learning environment.

Abstract

Translatability and untranslatability have been significant issues in song translation, particularly regarding figurative expressions. The present study aims to investigate the translatability and untranslatability of figurative language found in the song lyric “How Far I’ll Go” and its translated version, “Seb’rapa Jauh Ku Melangkah”. It also examines the translation techniques employed by the translator to address these issues. This qualitative study was conducted in the light of Kennedy’s (1979) classification of figurative language and the application of Molina & Albir’s (2002) translation techniques.  The finding of the study revealed two types of figurative language translation: translatability and untranslatability. Translatability was found in the translation of personification and hyperbole, while untranslatability was found in the translation of lyrics featuring alliteration, symbolism, and assonance. To address these translation challenges, the translator employs several techniques: particularization, amplification, and reduction were used to translate the personification and hyperbole.  In contrast, amplification and particularization were applied to tackle the untranslatability present in alliteration, symbolism, and assonance. The untranslatability issue arises due to several factors: linguistic and cultural untranslatability, that can result in meanings from the source language being not equivalent or are unknown in the target language. To address untranslatability, the translator often needs to make creative decisions to capture the core meaning and message of the source text while considering the linguistics, cultural, and stylistic context of the target text. Song translation is a complex process that involves more than just the ability to transfer meaning, but also creativity and cultural sensitivity.

Abstract

The controversy over the scarcity of cooking oil in Indonesia has made it difficult for all levels of society, from the lower, middle, and upper classes, to obtain cooking oil. With the scarcity of cooking oil, one of the fifth presidents in Indonesia, Megawati, commented and was featured in the Kompas.com news entitled "Membaca Kecerobohan Komunikasi Politik Megawati dalam Polemik Minyak Goreng". This research will focus on Megawati's response to determine how the discourse analysis process works. Critical analysis of news and the compass's alignment with Megawati in Teun A Van Dijk's theory. This qualitative research uses Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model, which divides the analysis into three structures: macrostructure, super macrostructure and microstructure. The research results show that through model analysis theory, Teun A Van Dijk's systematic system can make it easier for researchers to find the background of the problem through macro analysis. From this analysis, Kompas tries not to offend Megawati with sentences that change the meaning. Kompas's position in the news is neutral, in the middle between Megawati and other sources.

Abstract

Abstract. The research on Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1892) is motivated by the social reality of patriarchal oppression in marriage. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The study examines the critique of patriarchal oppression—the state in which societies grant men more power and privilege than women. The figure of John portrays patriarchal oppression as a husband who oppresses the narrator as a wife. The study reveals the effects of patriarchal oppression on the narrator’s life. There is also the narrator’s resistance to patriarchal oppression. This research explains further about patriarchal oppression resistance since previous studies focus on women’s difficulties in a patriarchal systemKeywords: patriarchal oppression, feminism, women, the yellow wallpaper
