Abstract

Vlog Project or Picture Series: Examining Effective Techniques in Teaching Speaking Skills. Objectives: This study investigates whether there are significant differences between students who are taught using the vlog project and picture series techniques. Methods: Quasi-Experimental method was used to collect information through two groups as experimental, and one control group, the number of samples is 58 students. The data obtained were analyzed using ANOVA test and continued with the Scheffe test. Findings: The findings in this study reveal that the use of the vlog project technique is, to some extent, more effective than the use of picture series and conventional techniques. It is evidenced by the value of the mean difference in the Scheffe test, which is positive for the other two groups, namely 2.70760 and 5.46316. Conclusion: vlog project technique significantly affects the teaching-learning process of speaking in the eighth grade, especially for recount text. Keywords: teaching techniques, speaking skills, vlog projects, picture series DOI: 10.23960/jpp.v11.i2.202111

Abstract

The museum building is a type of building that serves as a place of education and the knowledges place to introduce a history, events, creatures, etc. The purpose of the museum itself is to educate those things to the all generations in the future, so that the knowledges on a civilization will not be disconnected and disappear. As time passes, the museum building also has a diverse design architectures. One of them, concept of contemporary architecture style has its own style and not binding on a particular style. The museum building with the application of the contemporary architecture’s concept to make buildings with the characteristics of the distinctively and character. From that issue, arises the issue of how the application of the concept of contemporary architecture in the building of the museum. The aims of this research is to analyze the application of contemporary architecture in the Tsunami Aceh Museum building. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method with the stages of the analysis based on characteristics of the contemporary architecture of the application in the case study museum building. The result on this research is a conclusion of the application of the concept of contemporary architecture to the museum.

Abstract

Native or non-native English-speaking academics are compelled to write scientific articles in internationally reputable indexed journals today. With high demand of academic English, more and more articles are rejected by the editorial board for various reasons, mainly in the cohesion and coherence of their writing. This research seeks to map the types and patterns of cohesive device used to support the coherence of scientific articles. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this study compared the use of cohesion devices (CD) by both groups' writing (native & non-native) to further bridge the difficulties faced by non-native writers in shaping their academic writing cohesively and coherently. This study may also serve as a needs analysis that allows for the creation of models, materials, and teaching approaches to scientific article writing for learners of English as a foreign language.

Abstract

The student's attitude is needed to be self-directed learners to maintain lifelong learning in the ever-changing world. Thus, this study aimed to reveal whether graduate students' self-directed skills and attitudes vary based on university type and gender. Also, this study explored the relationship between graduate students' attitudes and self-directed lifelong learning skills then, further identified the lowest attitudes predictors for SDL, and analyzed how the students perceive the lecturer's role in self-directed learning. In a mixed-method study, 92 students from two selected public universities took questionnaires to measure their attitudes and self-directed learning and four students involved in the semi-structured interview. The obtained results showed that SDL and attitudes were found not to vary based on the university type. However, gender made a significant difference in SDL in favour of female students. Then, attitudes variable statistically significantly predicted students' SDL and perceptions of confidence and ability that emerged as the attitude dimension, seemed to be the lowest associated with the students' SDL. The majority of the students are still unaware of the SDL behaviour and see the lecturer as a factor that decisively affects them in developing greater independence. Further theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the English speaking skills of eighth-grade students of MTs Al Falaah Pandak using short videos to aid the learning process in which English is taught as a foreign language. The research was classroom action research with the subjects consisting of 30 eighth graders of MTs Al Falaah Pandak. This research utilized both the qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The qualitative approach to collecting the data was done through observations and interviews with the observation checklist and interview guidelines carefully designed as the instruments. The quantitative approach was done through a survey with questionnaires, field notes and tests as the instruments. The results indicated that using short videos as input in the teaching and learning of speaking can improve the students' speaking skills, as shown by the students' test results that improved gradually from cycle 1 to cycle 2. In cycle 1, the average score of the students' speaking test was 65.8. This noticeably improved in cycle 2, where the average score was 75, showing an improvement by 9.2 points. Further implications and potential implementation of using short videos as input in the teaching and learning of speaking in EFL classes are discussed.

Abstract

Translating culture-specific items (CSI) is difficult because the cultural items of the source language do not necessarily have the exact equivalent in the target language. This study aimed to describe the types of CSI in Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap movie based on Newmark’s (1988) categorization, Molina and Albir’s (2002) translation technique, and the translation norms. It employed descriptive qualitative research, and the data were collected using note-taking technique. The study results found 60 cultural items based on Newmark’s parameter types. The most frequently employed CSI type is socio-culture, with 29 data instances. Additionally, the category of the organization was observed in 20 instances, material culture was found in 8 instances, gesture and habit were present in 2 instances, and ecology was represented in 1 instance of data. 10 out of 18 translation techniques were used, but the most widely used translation technique was the literal translation, with 16 instances. Meanwhile, three dominant techniques were literal, adaptation, and generalization, which became the translation norms of CSI. The literal translation technique shows the closeness of SL (Source Language) and TL (Target Language) so that several concepts already have equivalents following the meaning of the SL.

Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in education has created new opportunities for improving academic writing in higher education. This study investigates the utilization of Chat GPT, an artificial intelligence-powered conversational model, as a tool to assist in writing. Students who used Chat GPT for academic writing were interviewed using a qualitative approach and semi-structured interviews. The data research showed that Chat GPT provides consumers with information regarding its origins, advantages, and trustworthiness. Additionally, it is regarded as a valuable instrument for creating ideas and facilitating the writing process. Nevertheless, the study revealed both benefits and drawbacks associated with its utilization, emphasizing the importance for teachers to maintain a balance between its advantages and potential negatives. The outcomes offer a more profound comprehension of Chat GPT's function in academic writing and propose additional investigation to evaluate its enduring influence on students' writing abilities and rectify any partiality in AI-generated text

Abstract

Architecture could be defined as the relation of form-function-meaning in a cultural framework. This paper aimed to understand the position of architecture in culture. The method used was correlation and interpretation. Correlation method connected architectural forms with cultural forms, while interpretation method provided an interpretation of the relationship between the two, and the position of architecture in culture. The results showed that architecture as part of culture had almost the same form between the two. Architectural term included forms, functions, meanings, and ideas, while cultural term included physical culture, behavior patterns or social, value, and ideas systems. The architectural form became part of the physical form of culture, the architectural function became part of the form of social cultural system, the architectural meaning became part of the cultural value system, and the architectural ideas became part of the cultural ideas systems

Abstract

During the late period of colonialism in Indonesia, many buildings with various styles emerged in major cities, especially Jakarta, Bandung, Cirebon, Semarang, Solo, and Surabaya, in which the government and Dutch architects played an important role. This study aims to explore the architectural styles of modern Indonesian buildings in the late colonial period. The method used is comparative descriptive through literature study and field observation. The descriptive method was carried out on buildings by Dutch architects which were considered prominent. The analysis was carried out by comparing several buildings based on modern Western architectural references. The results of this study show that there were many modern buildings with various styles, which can be grouped into 5 styles: Neo-Classical, Neo-Renaissance, Art Deco, Vernacular, and Modern Tropical. These styles are the result of a tug-of-war between modern Western and Indonesian traditional architectural styles.
