Abstract

Learning activities in developing the character of reading fondness in elementary school students during the COVID-19 period have raised various difficulties for both teachers as directors of the learning process and students as learning implementers. Challenges that are not responded to appropriately and wisely by schools have resulted in low reading habits. This paper aims to describe student reading behaviour and analyze the teacher's role during the learning process. Data were obtained through an online questionnaire from 122 students and seven teachers in three elementary schools in Riau, Central Kalimantan, and East Java. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis and reflective thinking. The results show that responsive and proportional teachers in delivering learning have succeeded in developing reading behaviour in students. This paper suggests the need for more in-depth data collection methods to understand the case better.

Abstract

The view that mental health can only be understood with a single approach can explain the existing phenomena. This paper aims to provide an alternative measurement model in conducting studies on student mental health. Data were obtained from 840 students at four state Islamic universities in East Java. Data was collected through the mental health scale. The percentage technique was used to examine the level and profile of mental health, while the variance analysis technique was used to investigate the differences between men and women. The analysis results show that the subjects have a high level of mental health and have a minimum mental illness profile. There was no evidence of a difference between men and women in terms of mental health. The results of this study have implications for the use of mental health measuring tools to be used as an alternative in measuring mental health.

Abstract

Among the various developmental tasks traversed by individuals, old age is a difficult time. In general, the elderly have problems in terms of adjustment, this is due to a variety of changes both physical and psychological accompanying age, but it is also caused by various changes in the status that arose in those days. The three changes of regression experienced by the elderly are physical, mental and social changes. This change will result in the ability to control itself. Dhikr as one form of therapy in Islam is considered capable of affecting self-control in the elderly. Based on these findings, it is recommended for the general public to pay attention to the elderly as they are vulnerable to experiencing periods of regression in their lives. One of the efforts that needs to be done is by giving the opportunity to do dzikr.

Abstract

This paper highlights the importance of learning motivation and critical thinking skills to an EFL learner. Apart from gaining language ability in speaking, reading, listening, and writing, an EFL learner must also be equipped with other factors or skills to succeed. Hence, this study aimed to determine how much learning motivation correlates with critical thinking skills amongst tertiary English Language Education Department students at Universitas Islam Indonesia. By deploying a purposive sampling technique, 50 participants were involved in this study. It comprises 16 male students (32%) and 34 female students (68%). Critical thinking and learning motivation questionnaires were utilized to garner the data, and the data were further analyzed using the product-moment correlation. This study also utilizes in-depth interviews to gain more perspective on critical thinking, learning motivation, and how it shapes behavior. The results demonstrated that learning motivation positively and significantly correlated with critical thinking skills. Across varied levels, contexts, and periods, the current study confirmed the persistent theory concerning the correlation between learning motivation and critical thinking, as prior related studies already demonstrated. Further studies are called to be conducted by engaging a more significant number of samples to reveal broader insights
