Abstract

Positioning women in literary works by women’s writers almost always has a dynamic turn. Asma Nadia, as a women’s writer is a representation of Forum Lingkar Pena which tends to flip the early women’s narrative model in Reformation era. This narrative model positions women, who are as if in a autonomus and auto-regulative narrative, into their subordinative position. The reversal of women’s narration by women’s writer with the religious perspectives brings up questions like: how is the positioning represented? How are the construction and the position of women in the turning point of the Reformation? What kind of reproduction of womanhood is formed in the novel? This paper aims at investigating the construction of womanhood in the novel with the religious perspectives by Asma Nadia, Bunda Kisah Cinta 2 Kodi. The alternatives in facing the religious structures are negotiated by the writers in various ways. Pardoxes emerge as the consequences of those alternatives.

Abstract

Identifying the correlation between masculinities and piety in Abidah El-Khalieqy’s Perempuan Berkalung Sorban [A Woman in a Turban] is a way to understand how gender works within a particular culture. As masculinity is not a monolithic concept, the mode of its correlation with piety varies. Based on the analysis of the characters and their characterizations in the novel, it is found that, from the perspective of the female narrator, the practice of piety leads to victimization and oppression of women when it is inscribed with hegemonic masculinity and vice versa. By applying narratology, this research is able to reveal the discursive practices from the combination of masculinities and piety. Khudori is a new kind of character which shares a positive masculinity dreamt by moslem women although his maculinity resembles the non-hegemonic ones. The other kinds of masculinity in this novel that function as a contrast show that the combination of piety and hegemonic masculinity is not desirable. On a structural side, Khudori is created as a part of the structural aspects which serves as a dramatic functionality that fits him best to be a flat character.

Abstract

Academic graphic designers possess strong cultural capital from higher education and deep knowledge of design. This capital includes academic qualifications, high technical skills, and extensive social networks. Internet technology opens global opportunities for them to leverage these skills. Through various digital platforms, they can showcase their work, obtain international projects, and join global communities. These platforms provide them with wide market access, enabling independent work and significant income. However, behind this freedom, they must follow platform rules that reduce their autonomy. Many academic designers then employ junior designers to expand their business, transforming into petite bourgeoisie within the digital economy, controlling junior labour while still subjected to the control of large digital capitalists. This practice creates a tiered exploitation, where senior designers extract more value from less experienced junior designers. This transformation shows that although internet technology and digital platforms open up significant opportunities, they also bring new challenges in the form of injustice and exploitation in the workforce, placing academic graphic designers at the intersection of economic freedom and structural dependency.

Abstract

Metaphor is a part of human cognition that plays an important role in human knowledge and experience. This study aims at examining novel metaphors based on the metaphorical language used by Indonesia’s state leader, President Joko Widodo, in his speeches on COVID-19 and their functions for pandemic handling and post-pandemic preparednessin Indonesia. Data were speeches produced during the first and second waves of the pandemic and taken from official website of Cabinet Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia. The metaphors identified in the speeches were analysed using Critical Metaphor Analysis proposed by Charteris-Black (2004, 2011, 2021). The identified novel metaphors were categorized under the following seven source domains: breakfast, computer, crater, test, teacher, momentum, wheel, and fire. The identified metaphors could be classified into three types of novel metaphor: linguistic structural metaphors, metaphors with new target domains, and new mapping metaphors. Results of analysis revealed that the metaphors of examination/test, teacher, and fire were high in frequency. As for the function, those novel metaphors could be interpreted as  Jokowi's way to reflect changing realities and motivate actions. Overall, the use of metaphors implied Jokowi's priority responses toward pandemic, i.e. to persuade the importance of solidarity and collectivity, strong sense of perseverance and resilience, as well as mutual cooperation. This study is expected to give insight that government leadersemploy metaphors as appropriate to situational context as the metaphors they can be effective in shaping public opinion and winning public support for health measures and policymaking in time of crises.

Abstract

This study examines the typology of gastronomic tourism in Gianyar Regency, Bali, within the framework of the Triangle Concept of Indonesian Gastronomy (food, culture, and history). A qualitative approach was employed through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation of gastronomic practices in Ubud and its surroundings. The findings identify four main typologies: observational culinary tourism, emphasizing aesthetic and sensory experiences; participatory culinary tourism, particularly cooking classes that transform domestic space into cultural learning arenas; agro-gastronomy, which integrates farming, local food production, and eco-tourism; and food festivals, functioning as platforms for cultural representation, entrepreneurship, and international collaboration. These typologies demonstrate how gastronomy in Gianyar is not merely a culinary attraction but also a vehicle for cultural preservation, social transformation, and sustainable community-based tourism. By highlighting the synergy of food, culture, and history, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of gastronomic tourism as both a symbolic and economic driver in Bali’s destination development.

Abstract

Films often represent masculinities influenced by social constructions produced and legitimised by the state. This research examines how the state shapes multiple forms of masculinity through the film Seperti Dendam Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas. The film critiques the hegemonic masculinity constructed by the state, while also illustrating that masculinity is not monolithic. Instead, it consists of diverse and sometimes conflicting contextually negotiated constructions. This study uses multimodal discourse analysis to explore the interrelationship between the state, masculinities, and gender representation within the film. The findings reveal that the state plays a significant role in maintaining hegemonic masculinity through policies and regulations that reinforce patriarchal norms. However, the film also opens up spaces for renegotiation, particularly for heterosexual men who fail to conform to dominant standards, allowing them to reclaim recognition within the masculine hierarchy. Furthermore, the film, produced in the Reformation era, set in the Orde Baru era, reflects a transitional moment where representations of masculinity become more fluid and contested. In a patriarchal system, while masculinity is still maintained through social control mechanisms, its boundaries are increasingly permeable, enabling cultural shifts and new gender negotiations. This research contributes to gender and media studies by showing how films, particularly Seperti Dendam Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas, can challenge and disrupt patriarchal constructions of masculinity shaped by the state, thereby opening up new avenues for understanding and redefining masculinity.

Abstract

This article analyzes the representation of male virility as a form of social coercion in two Indonesian films: Test Pack (2012) and Seperti Dendam Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas (Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash,2021). Drawing on Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen's multimodal discourse analysis, the study explores how the two films construct and critique the pressure on men to prove their masculinity through sexual performance. Although set in different political eras, the Orde Baru and the Reformation, both films depict the penis as a symbolic measure of virility. Characters like Rahmat and Ajo Kawir demonstrate that heterosexual men can also experience subordination due to infertility or impotence, challenging dominant ideals of masculinity. Despite their distinct visual and narrative strategies, the two films reveal how virility operates as a persistent mechanism of social control, shaping male identity across time. These findings underscore the role of cinema in reflecting on and questioning gender norms, particularly ideals surrounding male sexual performance.

Abstract

Travel writing serves as a crucial medium through which narrators document and interpret their encounters with foreign cultures. This study examines Hanum Salsabiela’s Bulan Terbelah di Langit Amerika (BTLA) to explore how the narrator reports on the United States, expresses her self-identity during her journey in the United States, and represents the people of the United States through the lens of postcolonial travel writing. This research is significant because the narrator not only depicts the United States as a geographical and cultural space but also highlights the presence of Islam within it. As the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, it is not surprising that many Indonesian travel writers are drawn to Islamic regions such as the Middle East. However, in recent years, some have begun to explore Western countries, which differ significantly in culture and religion. The data collection methods used in this research are textual observation and note-taking. In addition, the data analysis employs discourse analysis grounded in the postcolonial travel writing paradigms of Carl Thompson. In conclusion, the study indicates that the United States is portrayed as a metropolitan country, yet it continues to face overlapping social issues, including homelessness, Islamophobia, and discrimination. BTLA functions as self-reflective travel writing, using the United States as a space for the narrator to explore and reflect on her identity as a Muslim. Furthermore, in representing the Other, the narrator still exhibits traces of a neo-colonial attitude, even though she strives to present a cosmopolitan perspective.

Abstract

The lack of research on literary elements in "babad" is in line with the limited study of Islamic elements within this genre. This research aims to analyze the Javanese poets' depictions of Islam in "Babad Tanah Jawi" and "Babad Giyanti." The study operates under the assumption that "babad" as literary works can allegorically create a contested space where Islam interacts with other traditions. A qualitative paradigm with a comparative structural approach is employed in this study, focusing on the narratives that shape the author's understanding of Islam in the 18th century. The findings of this research reveal that the court poet's portrayal of Islam in "Babad Tanah Jawi" shares similarities with another work in the same genre, "Babad Giyanti." These commonalities encompass the utilization of Islamic verses in the "bhabuka" text and "asmaul husna," the depiction of "walisongo's" role, the practice of "tawajjuh," moral Islamic teachings, and the political positioning characterized by ambivalence and negotiation among different traditions.
