Abstract

The notion of social media activism has often been linked with both event and heroic acts in the public with the aim to transform the society. The problem with this framework is its reliance uponperformance, while lacking of awareness on the mundane aspects of everyday life, where public issues seep into with its own complexity. To fill this gap, the study uses Social Learning Theory as well as Uses and Gratification Theory to understand to what extent social media supports learning for sustainable living. By way of an ethnographic study on online community, the study found that the women under study have utilized the social media strategically to respond to the health issue and environmental problem, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, through the discourse practice of sustainable living. Keywords: online community, social media activism, social learning, sustainable living.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the active and passive usage of the Javanese language by youths aged 10 to 17 in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Conducted in the province's five territorial units of Bantul Regency, Sleman Regency, Kulon Progo Regency, Gunung Kidul Regency, and Yogyakarta City, the specific objective is to determine the extent to which children and adolescents use mass media — particularly television, radio, and social media — as instruments to access contents in Javanese. It is crucial to examine how the constant flow of information affects their exposure to Javanese on various platforms as well as their use of the language on social media This quantitative study surveyed 330 elementary, junior high, and senior high school students from both public and private schools in the province’s rural and urban areas. Similarly, despite its popularity, social media has yet to be used to the maximum by Yogyakarta youth to access content in Javanese or as a means to express the language — a setback created by the dominance of the Indonesian language.

Abstract

This article explores the experience of cultivating religious senses and sensibilities through ritual Sufi dance. In contemporary Indonesia, Sufi dance serves both as a performance and a ritual. As a performance, it is staged at specific events; as a ritual, it acts as a religious practice, engaging the body and fostering a connection with God to experience spiritual ecstasy. Employing a phenomenological approach, the research data were gathered through interviews, participant observation, and social media. This article focuses on the Tari Sufi Mafia Sholawat group, the predominant Sufi dance community in Java, and illustrates how sound and listening during Sufi dance rituals significantly nurture and enhance religious sensibility and the affective body. Furthermore, it identifies various sounds present in the Sufi dance performance that resonate with listeners’ senses and sensibilities. These sounds evoke a range of bodily actions and emotional responses from the performers, such as hand movements, closed eyes, weeping, and screaming. The dancers perform these movements within a sacred space, thereby amplifying their spiritual impact.

Abstract

This paper is to figure out R. Ng. Yasadipura I’s poe(li)tical imagination of Islam in Babad Tanah Jawi. The ‘politics’ is defined not merely as instrumental utility, but intertwined with ‘poetics’, an aesthetic strategy which allegorically unveils an interpretation of the undecidability of  Islam as central Islam or peripheral Islam, as Arabia Islam or Javanese Islam. Based on the biographical and structural approaches, this article attempts to analyze textual, ideological, and religious traces of this 18th century Javanese Muslim bhujangga and its relation to the way he describes Islam in Babad Tanah Jawi. Yasadipura I is a political subject, since he describes Islam not merely as a religious consensus, but also dissensus to other identities. This dissensus is partly a logical consequence of—using Jacques Rancière’s term—Yasadipura I’s ‘class migration’, ranging from Muslim student (santri) from Kedu, royal advisor (menteri) of Surakarta court, to prolific writer and translator of Hindu-Buddhist kakawin and Islamic Malay suluk.

This is a qualitative study which gathers data through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. This research aims to address three primary questions: (1) How the agency of "women's leadership" of Maria T. Geme within FKUB NTT?; (2) What is her perspective on women's involvement in issues of  religious harmony and peace building?; (3) What are Maria  thoughts and works while leading FKUB NTT, and what it's implications for interfaith dialogue and religious harmony? This study concluded that Geme is the first and only woman in the history of Indonesia to lead FKUB at the provincial level. Her leadership strategy is to integrate women's leadership and her agency in the development of FKUB initiatives, in order to emphasizes women's involvement on the issue of religious harmony with mubadalah paradigm (mutuality). Therefore, preserving and strengthening local wisdom is one of important things in developing and fostering interfaith dialogue and religious harmony.

Abstract

Abortion is a complex issue. On the one hand, abortion is an illegal act according to positive law and is prohibited by religion in Indonesia. On the other hand, abortion is a shortcut to solving unwanted pregnancies by married and unmarried couples. This study aims to see how the media frames news about illegal abortion, how positive law regulates this act and what the triggers doing illegal abortion. This research is qualitative research with a content analysis approach. The results of the study show that the media tends to be neutral by not taking sides between the perpetrators and the victims. This research also reveals the fact that the high demand of the Indonesian people for an illegal abortion service is at least triggered by two things, the legal system, and social norms applied in Indonesia. The legal system prohibiting abortion in Indonesia is incapable to prevent and provide a deterrent effect against perpetrators of abortion criminalization. In addition, Indonesian society’s system of social norms is very sensitive to immoral cases, such as pregnancy out of wedlock. As a result, many pregnant women who are out of wedlock choose to hide their pregnancies and then secretly carry out illegal abortions

Abstract

Traumatic events such as the Holocaust transcend through generations. Hirsch strengthens this argument by saying that post-memory is a study of the structure of intergenerational and trans-generational memory transmission in the form of traumatic knowledge and experiences. This study raises the meaning of memory transmission in the Dora Bruder novel by Patrick Modiano. The method used in this article is the content analysis of the story. The data are collected form of sentences that describe the meaningful forms of memory transmission. There are three interpretations from the results of memory transmission. They are the narrator’s interpretation of a location as signifiers of the incommensurability of return, the narrator’s interpretation as an agent and actor of allo-identification, and the emergence of a desire to reject the act of forgetting. Analysis using post-memory illustrates that the generation of heirs to the traumatic memories inherits various challenged and debated questions, intending to expose and retell that story to the public.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine how the secular media in Surakarta represent Islam in the case of Charlie Hebdo. Therefore, this study used discourse analysis of Theo van Leeuwen focusing on how the subject or actor of the show in the media. This study concluded that the media represent Islam not only with “Western ideology” through idioms such as radical Islamist militants and terrorists, but also with "Islamic ideology". It is done through the construction of Islam as a religion of moderation and delegitimize Charlie Hebdo as magazine satyr abusing freedom. Various strategies are used ranging from strategy passivation to interdetermination. In this case, there are two poles of attraction in both media, namely the Western and Islamic ideology. If both media are quoting from Western sources, the Western ideology dominates the media narrative. Conversely, when both media used Islamic sources, the influence of Islamic ideology dominates the narrative of both media.

Abstract

This study compares the folktale “The Story of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp” from the Arabian Nights, and the animated film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation under the title “Aladdin”. The story of Disney’s animated film “Aladdin” is based on the “The Story of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.” The comparison of the two is focused on the aspect of Islamic values, its shifts and changes in the animated film Aladdin. The study applies Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, by applying the three stages of analysis.  The first level is micro level, on the language practice. In the second level, mezo level, discusses the discourse practice that covers the intertextuality that explore the production and consumption of text as the reference in delivering the ideas. In the third level, macro level, it interprets the social context of particular events. Abstract

This study aims to explore the practice of “flexing” and the luxury lifestyle as represented in the media both through the self-representation of female public figures on their social media accounts and through coverage by mainstream outlets. These figures include actresses, entertainers, and other widely recognized social personalities. The research is urgent given that the public display of wealth and opulence disseminated through the media generates a domino effect within society, particularly in shaping consumption patterns and fueling an increasingly pervasive culture of consumerism in Indonesia. The proliferation of consumerist culture both reflects and exacerbates social inequality in Indonesia, where poverty remains a fundamental challenge. A gendered perspective, especially feminist scholarship focusing on the concept of “false solidarity” is employed as the analytical lens in this research. Here, false solidarity refers to performative gestures of empathy that reinforce inequality, mock economically disadvantaged women, and normalize such practices through state institutional complicity. The method used is Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), which examines social practices that contain elements of inequality among members of different social groups, as conveyed through the linguistic discourses circulating on social media.
