Using a pre-experimental design, this study involved 85 students, being given an experimental treatment in the form of a freedom to choose and use their own media to present an English advertisement, one of the basic competences the students had to master in the semester when the data were being collected. A pre-test in the form of oral interview was given at the beginning of the study, followed by the implementation of the research treatment. At the end of the study, the students took a post-test of a similar format. In other words, the data in this study were in the form of the students’ speaking performance. With the help of SPSS, a test was employed to check the effectiveness of the media. Abstract

This study aims at exploring the effects of collaborative writing (CW) on students’ argumentative essays and their perceptions about its implementation. It involved 42 students from a state university in Indonesia, grouped into two: 14 students of control group and 28 of experimental group. In the control group, argumentative writing tasks were completed individually; in the experimental group, these tasks were conducted in pairs. Writing quality was determined by a holistic rating procedure that included content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Results of the study showed that CW had an overall significant effect on students’ L2 argumentative writing quality.  However, this effect varied from one writing aspect to another; the effects were significant for content, organization, and vocabulary, but not for grammar and mechanics. In addition, the findings also revealed that the students enjoyed the CW activitis, and most of them perceived CW positively as it improved their L2 writing performance. Keywords: argumentative writing, collaborative writing, writing quality, students’ perception

Abstract

Writing an argumentative essay might put more challenges toEFL low proficient students.  This paper seeks to shed light on the contribution of pre-writing techniques to the development of logical thinking expected in an argumentative essayamong Indonesian EFL university students. With two objectives leading the discussion, the paper suggests pre-planning to construct thinking while simulatenously reading going along with the writing as a source of input. Clustering and outlining, the proposed two pre-writing techniques, are found to facilitate the students’ abstract thinking prior to writing and assist the higher order thinking skill for better writing outcomes. It is suggested that pre-writing techniques should be a regular practice especially for low proficient student writers, with each technique serving different purposes. Keywords:argumentative writing, clustering, outlining, pre-writing techniques

Abstract

EFL students are required to have a good writing skill. Of course, it will take a process; students should practice a lot and teacher should respond students’s work in order to be better. Many studies have investigated the effect of teacher’s feedback on students writing. In general, the finding showed that there was a positive effect of giving feedback on students’s writing; giving feedback on an assignment helps learners reduce their errors on that assignment during the revision process, the accuracy of students who received written feedback in the immediate post-test outperformed those who did not receive feedback, feedback given  by teacher can improve students' writing performance, and so on. In giving feedback, teacher should consider several things in order that the feedback provided gives good result.

Abstract

This cross-sectional survey study investigates the preferences of freshmen and sophomores for corrective feedback in speaking instruction, which includes perception of corrective feedback, types of error to be corrected, timing of correction, sources of correction, and types of corrective feedback. Using questionnaire and interview to collect the data, the study found that the two groups welcomed the feedback, acknowledged the benefits of corrective feedback, but felt embarrassed when being orally corrected. Both the freshmen and sophomores wanted all their errors to be corrected. Whereas the freshmen preferred the grammatical errors to be always corrected, the sophomores preferred the phonological errors. With regard to the timing, the two groups expected their errors to be corrected after they finished speaking. Additionally, the two groups favored teacher feedback. Finally, regardless of the different types of errors, the most preferred feedback was explicit feedback, whereas the least preferred one was paralinguistic signal.

Abstract

Experiences of ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse schoolBeing ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse school is a challenge. This study aims to explore the experiences of students from various ethnic groups as ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse school. These experiences cover both the barriers and the success of those students in adjusting to the culturally diverse school. Five students coming from diverse ethnic groups were recruited as the participants. This study adopted a qualitative design by using a semi-structured interview as the research instrument. The interview data were transcribed and then coded into several themes based on the focus of the research. The results showed that the ethnic minority students might find difficulties adjusting to the school at first. However, they gradually adjusted to the school because of these following factors: teachers’ support, students’ cohesiveness, students’ cooperation, and teachers’ equity. The results of this study imply that the ethnic minority students once experienced some challenges in adjusting to the school environment before they were facilitated with more positive schooling experiences related to student-student relationships and student-teacher relationships.

Abstract

This quasi experimental study aims to investigate how written retelling technique affects the reading comprehension of university students having different personality learning styles (introverted vs. extroverted). A reading comprehension test and a questionnaire were utilized to collect the data. Two groups of students were involved in the study, with the experimental group receiving the treatment of being taught using a written retelling technique and the control group being taught using the oral retelling technique. The results of the study revealed that the first group of students showed better performance in reading comprehension test than the latter group. Even though there was a significant difference between the extroverted and the introverted students in reading comprehension achievement, the findings suggest that written retelling technique was more effective regardless of the personality learning styles.  Permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v45i12017p027
