Abstract

Background: The success of economic development is reflected in the level of welfare experienced by the society. According to data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the Islamic economy has become one of the largest contributors to the national economy, accounting for 46 percent of the total GDP. This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic banking in supporting economic growth in Indonesia. Method: A quantitative approach is employed using secondary monthly time series data covering the period from January 2018 to December 2023. The research applies the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) method in its restricted form, known as the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), using EViews 12 software. The variables used include total financing (TP) as a proxy for financial deepening, BOPO as a proxy for banking efficiency, FDR as a proxy for risk management, the number of bank offices (JK) as a proxy for financial inclusion, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a proxy for economic growth. Results: The results reveal that the role of the Islamic banking sector in Indonesia’s economic growth is stronger and more significant in the long run than in the short run. In the short term, total financing (TP) has not shown a significant effect on GDP, while banking efficiency (BOPO) exerts a direct and significant influence. In the long term, however, total financing and banking efficiency exhibit a more stable and significant relationship with economic growth, with Islamic banking efficiency (BOPO) contributing the most to GDP, at around 20–21%. Conclusion: These findings indicate that Islamic banking plays a pivotal role in sustaining Indonesia’s long-term economic growth, aligning with the objectives of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah in realizing economic welfare (ḥifẓ al-māl and ḥifẓ al-nafs) and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the shifting role of the surau within Minangkabau society in West Sumatra, where it once functioned as a central institution for worship, learning, and the moral formation of young men. Traditionally anchored in the authority of the buya, the surau embodied a living synthesis of Islamic teaching and customary values. Drawing on field-based research, including in-depth interviews with religious scholars, customary leaders, and cultural experts, this study traces a significant transformation in its contemporary meaning. The findings suggest that the gradual detachment of the surau from the figure of the buya has eroded its philosophical and cultural significance, reducing it to a largely symbolic or physical space. This shift is closely linked to the diversification of Islamic educational orientations and the growing influence of local political dynamics. As a result, the surau no longer operates as a formative cultural institution, raising broader questions about continuity, authority, and identity in Minangkabau society.

Abstract

This study examines strategies for developing Islamic banking financial inclusion services through Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) Agents as extended outlets for reaching underserved communities. Despite Indonesia’s large Muslim population, the outreach and service quality of Islamic banking remain limited compared to conventional banks, driven by human resource constraints, unattractive incentive structures, limited product and service features, aggressive competition from conventional bank agents, and inadequate infrastructure in remote areas. To address these challenges, this study employs the Analytic Network Process (ANP) using a qualitative approach based on expert judgment. Primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with five expert informants comprising academics, BSI practitioners, and regulators. Data collection involved observation, interviews, questionnaires, documentation, and literature review, and the analysis was conducted using the Super Decisions software. Kendall’s Coefficient of Concordance (W) was applied to assess the level of agreement among experts. The results indicate that the most critical constraints are low employee awareness, limited agent competence, unattractive incentive structures, and infrastructure limitations in remote areas. Priority solutions include increasing dedicated human resources for agent management, integrating agent performance into key performance indicators (KPIs), expanding product and service features, and strengthening below-the-line promotion. At the strategic level, the findings highlight the importance of strengthening human resources, developing robust and user-friendly digital agent platforms, and implementing cluster-based agent management. The Kendall’s W values indicate a moderate level of expert agreement, supporting the robustness of the ANP results. This study contributes to the literature on Islamic banking and financial inclusion by providing empirical, strategy-oriented insights into the development of agent-based Islamic banking services. The findings offer practical implications for banks, regulators, and policymakers seeking to strengthen inclusive, sustainable, and competitive Islamic banking ecosystems

Abstract

Abstract

This study tests a livelihood-oriented model of micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) reorganization in Sibolga City, Indonesia. Using survey data from 150 coastal food MSME actors and partial least squares structural equation modeling, the study examines whether Sharia digital transformation, Sharia green economy orientation, and Islamic capital enhance MSME reorganization directly and indirectly through multi-stakeholder collaboration. All direct paths are positive and significant (p < .001). Collaboration is the strongest predictor of reorganization (β = .556) and partially mediates the effects of digital transformation, green orientation, and Islamic capital. The model explains 41.7% of collaboration and 71.2% of reorganization. Multi-group analysis shows that digital transformation is more influential among enterprises with higher platform readiness, whereas green orientation, Islamic capital, and collaboration remain stable across groups. The study introduces a Synchronized Sharia Reorganization Model that treats technology, ecological responsibility, ethical-relational resources, and institutional coordination as complementary capabilities. The findings support inclusive coastal livelihood policy, particularly for women-participatory, household-based food enterprises.
