Abstract

Nagari Ketaping in Batang Anai District has great potential for culinary tourism, especially through traditional fried snack vendors such as sala lauak. However, the extensive use of cooking oil in these activities leads to the generation of used cooking oil (jelantah), which poses serious health and environmental risks. Repeated use of the oil produces free radicals and carcinogenic substances that may cause degenerative diseases, while improper disposal into waterways leads to pollution and ecosystem damage. This community service program aims to educate and raise awareness among members of the majlis taklim in Nagari Ketaping about the dangers of used cooking oil and to demonstrate its potential for conversion into economically valuable products. The main participants are housewives who also operate small fried snack businesses. The outcomes include a scientific publication in Pelita Eksakta Journal (FMIPA UNP), a video documentation, and online media dissemination through Berita Minang.

Abstract

This systematic literature review analyzes the complexity of illegal gold mining (ASGM) from an environmental policy perspective through a review of 53 selected scientific publications (2000-2025). The results reveal that ASGM is the largest source of global mercury pollution, contributing 37% of anthropogenic emissions, which triggers environmental and health crises through bioaccumulation and biomagnification mechanisms in the food chain. Regulatory frameworks exist in Indonesia, such as the Minerba Law, the PPLH Law, the RAN PPM, and the ratification of the Minamata Convention. However, the main findings of this study identify a significant implementation gap between policy and practice in the field, caused by weak law enforcement, structural corruption, suboptimal inter-agency coordination, and the lack of viable technological and economic alternatives for communities. The root of the problem lies in a governance deficit, where a command-and-control approach fails to address the reality of ASGM as an economic lifeline for marginalized communities. Therefore, a sustainable solution requires a paradigm shift towards inclusive governance that integrates guided formalization, alternative economic empowerment, and a supply-chain approach to disrupt the distribution of illegal mercury.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of education, population, and technology on household waste management decisions. This study used multiple linear regression analysis with data obtained from BPS Susenas 2023 data in the West Sumatra region. The findings of this study revealed that the level of education (junior high school, high school, and university), population, and technology, did not have a significant influence on household waste management decisions. Although some variables such as technology and education level have a positive relationship direction towards waste management, the results are not statistically significant, which means they are not strong enough to influence households' decision to manage waste. These results suggest that households' decision to manage waste does not only depend on education, population, or technology use, but may also be influenced by other factors, such as environmental socialization, local policies, availability of waste management facilities, and ingrained habits.

Abstract

This research highlights the potential of anionic polyacrylamide as a main treatment agent for liquid waste from educational laboratories, particularly in the removal of copper ions. This study using experiment with varies the concentration of anionic polyacrylamide with 3, 5, and 7% weight per weight. The initial concentration of copper in liquid waste was very high ranging between 600 mg/L. The findings indicate that the application of anionic polyacrylamide in wastewater treatment significantly reduces the concentration of copper ions, especially in wastewater from educational laboratories. Specifically, anionic polyacrylamide, at a concentration of 3% w/w, effectively removed almost all copper ions from the wastewater found in analytical chemistry laboratory and also achieved the quality standard of treated wastewater for copper parameter. The pH of the treated wastewater is critical in determining the overall effectiveness of the treatment, with a higher pH resulting in more effective coagulation of copper ions. The effectiveness of the treatment is influenced by the pH of the wastewater and the concentration of the polyacrylamide used. Further studies are needed on other types of heavy metals that can be coagulated using this method in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding.

Abstract

Public health reflects a complex and dynamic interaction between various determinants, where environmental conditions play a crucial role in influencing disease distribution patterns. The type of research used is qualitative through a descriptive approach. Data from this study were collected through medical records of patients visiting the Lubuk Alung Health Center during the period January to December 2024. The data collection process was carried out by health center officers by accessing medical records to document the type of disease and the number of cases based on their respective work areas. Furthermore, each case of disease was classified according to the type of disease and the patient's area of residence. This study was conducted in the work area of the Lubuk Alung Health Center, Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra. The results of this study found that the distribution of the ten most common diseases was greatly influenced by local environmental conditions in seven villages, namely Air Tajun, Balah Hilir, Lubuk Alung, Pasir Lawas, Pangkalan Kasiak, Sei Abang, and Singguling. The disease with the highest number of cases was ARI (393 cases), followed by Diabetes Mellitus (355 cases), Hypertension (196 cases), Schizophrenia (168 cases), Dyspepsia (135 cases), Cephalgia (35 cases), Febris (56 cases), Skin Disease (45 cases), Heart Disease/HT (50 cases), and Other Diseases (51 cases). Balah Hilir and Pangkalan Kasiak villages showed the highest prevalence of diseases in general, with Balah Hilir recording the highest cases of ARI (97), Diabetes Mellitus (63), Dyspepsia (30), and Heart Disease/HT (11), while Pangkalan Kasiak dominated cases of Diabetes Mellitus (79), ARI (85), and Hypertension (65). Sei Abang also had high figures for ARI (67), Schizophrenia (17), and Skin Disease (12). In contrast, villages such as Pasir Lawas and Lubuk Alung had relatively lower cases of most diseases. This uneven distribution of disease indicates the strong influence of local environmental factors such as air quality, sanitation, lifestyle, and health infrastructure, so that specific area-based interventions are needed to improve overall public health.

Abstract

The Batang Arau River in Padang City exhibits contrasting environmental conditions between its upstream and downstream segments. The upstream–midstream areas still maintain good water quality with positive carrying capacity, while the downstream segment has exceeded its natural assimilation limit due to increasing pollutant loads originating from domestic and community activities. This study aims to analyze water quality, calculate carrying capacity, and model the relationship between community behavior and the river’s assimilation capacity using a system dynamics approach. The modeling results indicate a continuous decline in carrying capacity driven by population growth and waste generation, illustrating that human behavior has a direct impact on the ecological balance of the river. Therefore, sustaining the ecological function of the Batang Arau River requires integrated pollution control policies, community-based waste management, and continuous environmental education to enhance public awareness and ensure the long-term sustainability of the river ecosystem.
