Abstract

The extraction method using Wet Peroxide Oxidation (WPO) is a digestion method for separating microplastic particles and other organic/inorganic precipitation, with a liquid oxidation process using peroxide and iron salts as catalysts. Polyethylene (PE) is a type of plastic that pollutes the environment due to its high level of use in the packaging sector. The aim of this research is to determine the optimum conditions for the Wet Peroxide Oxidation (WPO) extraction method and obtain an effective method for identifying microplastics. Variations in oven temperature are 70⁰C, 80⁰C, 90⁰C, 100⁰C, and 110⁰C; variations in Fe(II) concentrsation 0.025 M, 0.05 M, 0.075 M, 0.1 M, and 0.125 M; heating temperature variations 30⁰C, 45⁰C, 60⁰C, 75⁰C, and 90⁰C. The research results showed that the optimum oven conditions occurred at a temperature of 90⁰C producing a microplastic mass of 0.5943 grams, the optimum Fe(II) concentration of 0.1M produced a mass of 1.2966 grams, the optimum heating temperature occurred at 60⁰C producing a mass of 0.7128 grams. For samples, characterization using FTIR showed that no new groups were formed after being treated under optimal conditions. Meanwhile, for XRF, no impurity elements were identified after the sample was treated with optimum conditions.

Abstract

Methyl orange dye is an organic pollutant often found in textile industry waste and harms the environment due to its nature, which makes it difficult to decompose naturally. One method that has attracted attention in its processing is the Photo-Fenton process, which utilizes hydroxyl radicals (•OH) as powerful degradation agents. This article summarizes recent developments in applying heterogeneous Photo-Fenton to Methyl Orange degradation, focusing on degradation efficiency, factors influencing reactions, and degradation pathways. This study discusses the influence of reaction parameters such as initial pH, H₂O₂ concentration, catalyst concentration and light intensity on the degradation rate. In addition, various types of heterogeneous catalysts, including metal oxide-based and ferrous composites, were analyzed based on their effectiveness and stability in the Photo-Fenton system. The Methyl Orange degradation pathway is proposed based on an intermediate product identified in previous studies, suggesting that the reaction proceeds through a gradual oxidation mechanism until simpler and more environmentally friendly compounds are formed. The results of this study show that the heterogeneous Photo-Fenton system provides advantages over homogeneous systems, especially in increasing degradation efficiency and prolonging the catalyst reactivity cycle. The use of heterogeneous catalysts allows for the formation of larger numbers of active species, thus accelerating the breaking of the Methyl Orange structure. In addition, further research is needed to improve the stability of the catalyst, optimize reaction conditions, and evaluate its potential application on an industrial scale. This study will be a reference for developing a more efficient and sustainable Photo-Fenton-based waste treatment method.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder whose prevalence continues to rise, necessitating safer and more effective therapeutic alternatives. This study aims to explore the potential of active compounds from the calamus plant (Acorus calamus L.) as candidates for α-glucosidase enzyme inhibitors using an in silico approach. Pharmacokinetic screening, toxicity prediction, and Lipinski's Rule of Five screening were conducted to assess the pharmacological suitability of the compounds, followed by molecular docking using MOE 2022 software. The results of the study showed that several compounds from the jeringau plant (Acorus calamus L.), such as galgravin and veraguensin, have strong binding affinity to the α-glucosidase enzyme with docking scores of −8.40 kcal/mol and −8.37 kcal/mol, respectively. Pharmacokinetic prediction results indicate that the test compounds have good absorption and meet druglikeness criteria. This study suggests that active compounds from jeringau have potential for development as natural-based antidiabetic agents. However, this research is limited to computational analysis without experimental data support, and compound selection is based on GC-MS results without further isolation or characterization. Further studies through in vitro and in vivo testing, as well as molecular dynamics simulations and ADMET predictions, are required to validate these findings comprehensively.
