Abstract

Microplastic pollution in wastewater has become an urgent environmental issue due to its resistance to degradation and its potential to contaminate the food chain. This study aims to develop a natural coagulant based on chitosan extracted from the waste shells of Scylla serrata (blue swimming crab) as an eco-friendly solution for precipitating polystyrene (PS) microplastics in wastewater. Chitosan was obtained through demineralization, deproteinization, and deacetylation processes, and its effectiveness was tested in a solution containing 50 mg of pure PS microplastics in 250 ml of wastewater. The results showed that the optimum pH for coagulation was 5, achieving a removal efficiency of 98.4%. The optimal chitosan concentration was 0.5%, resulting in a 97.6% removal rate, while the optimal stirring speed of 700 rpm yielded an efficiency of 89.2%. These findings indicate that chitosan derived from crab shell waste is an effective and sustainable coagulant for mitigating microplastic pollution and holds promising potential for application in environmentally friendly wastewater treatment.

Abstract

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) microplastics are among the primary contaminants in aquatic environments and pose potential risks to human health. Coagulation is an effective method for reducing microplastics; however, conventional coagulants such as alum may leave harmful residues. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of chitosan synthesized from crab shell waste (Scylla serrata) as an eco-friendly biocoagulant in the coagulation of PET microplastics. Chitosan synthesis was carried out through three stages: demineralization, deproteinization, and deacetylation. The coagulation process was conducted under varying pH conditions (3, 5, 7, 9, and 11), with a chitosan dosage of 500 mg/L and a sedimentation time of 45 minutes. The results show that optimal conditions were achieved at pH 7, with microplastic removal efficiency reaching 98.4%. Characterization using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), and stereo microscopy confirmed successful floc formation and active interaction between chitosan and microplastics. The study concludes that chitosan derived from crab shell waste has strong potential as an effective and environmentally friendly alternative coagulant for treating water contaminated with microplastics.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited research on the use of natural biocoagulants for microplastic removal, despite the significant environmental and human health impacts of this phenomenon. The aim of this research is to analyze the influence of pH variation, chitosan dosage, and settling time on the coagulation effectiveness of polystyrene (PS) microplastics, and to determine the process's optimum conditions. A quantitative method was employed, using PS microplastic solution samples (30 mg/L) treated under varying pH levels (4–10), chitosan doses (10–50 mg/L), and settling times (10–50 minutes). Data were collected through laboratory experiments and analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and stereo microscopy. The results indicate that optimum conditions were achieved at pH 6, with a chitosan dose of 30 mg/L and a settling time of 30 minutes, resulting in microplastic removal efficiency exceeding 90%. These findings support the theory of electrostatic interactions between the amine groups in chitosan and the negatively charged surface of microplastics. The main conclusion is that crab shell-derived chitosan is effective as an environmentally friendly biocoagulant for reducing microplastic content in wastewater. The study contributes to the growing literature on biocoagulation and offers practical recommendations for wastewater treatment managers to adopt sustainable natural coagulants. Moreover, it opens avenues for future research on chitosan-based composites for treating various types of microplastics.

Abstract

Waste management in Padang City is currently facing a critical phase with the Air Dingin Landfill predicted to reach full capacity in 2026 and having a worrying Environmental Risk Index (IRL). This problem is exacerbated by a large fiscal shortfall, where the regional budget allocation is far less than the ideal requirement of IDR 133 billion per year. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of waste policies and formulate a communal-based integrated management strategy as a sustainable solution. The research method uses a qualitative approach through literature studies, a review of Regional Regulation Number 21 of 2012 and flagship government programs such as “Padang Bagoro” and “Padang Mamilah”, as well as secondary data analysis of waste management data (SIPSN). The results of the analysis indicate a functional gap between seasonal social participation and low sorting behavior at source, as well as weak law enforcement due to limited supervisory personnel. This study recommends policy restructuring through a communal-scale management approach (RT-RW) that maximizes communal management and integration with the sub-district Waste Management Institution (LPS) and industrial sector to reduce the logistical burden and extend the technical life of the landfill.

Abstract

Semiconductors are materials capable of conducting electricity within specific limits, a property that is essential for applications in photocatalysts and solar cells. Copper oxide (CuO), a transition metal oxide, exhibits favorable properties as a p-type semiconductor and is characterized by a narrow bandgap ranging from 1.2 to 1.8 eV. However, CuO has a limitation in the form of a high electron–hole recombination rate, which requires modification through doping and additive incorporation. This study aims to analyze the effects of zinc oxide (ZnO) doping and the addition of monoethanolamine (MEA) on the characteristics of CuO nanoparticles synthesized using the sol–gel method. This method was selected because it can produce materials with a large surface area and good stability. Characterization was conducted using ultraviolet–diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–DRS) to determine bandgap energy. The findings show that the optimal bandgap value was obtained at 20% ZnO concentration, with a bandgap energy of 1.33 eV, while the addition of 2 mL MEA produced a bandgap energy of 1.42 eV. The decrease in bandgap value indicates that ZnO doping affects the optical properties of CuO. A smaller bandgap narrows the distance between the valence band and the conduction band, thereby facilitating electron excitation and requiring lower photon energy. This study contributes to the development of modified CuO-based semiconductor materials by demonstrating the potential role of ZnO doping and MEA addition in improving optical characteristics relevant to photocatalytic and solar cell applications.
