Abstract

The study was aimed to quantify volume of surface runoff, soil erosion and nutrient loss from the forest-agriculture landscape (forest margins) in Lore Lindu National Park Central Sulawesi.  Surface runoff volume and soil erosion were measured daily on erosion plots. It was installed on  several land use types i.e. forest land,  maize,  young cocoa, medium cocoa, old cocoa, vanilla, shrub and bush and bareland, on the soil Typic Dystrudepts with slope ± 40%. The nutrient content in surface runoff and sediments were analyzed from selected surface runoff and sediment samples.  Surface runoff and soil erosion from agriculture land were respectively 2.1 to 3.4 and  3.6 to 5.8 times higher than from forest lands. Meanwhile, surface runoff and soil erosion from bareland were respectively 7.0 and 23.7 times greater than forest land respectively.  Sediment nutrient contents from forest land were  higher than agriculture land.  In the contrary, total nutrient lost from agriculture land were higher than forest land ones.  Nutrient losses carried by surface runoff were larger than those losses carried by sediments.  Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) loss in surface runoff was 6,1 to 8,0 times higher than total organic carbon (TOC) loss in sediments.  Likewise, nitrate (NO3-) loss in surface runoff was 1.9 to 12.1 times higher than total nitrogen (TN) in sediments as well as potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium losses.  Potassium is dominant cation loss carried by the surface runoff, while calcium is mainly carried by sediment. Keywords:  Dissolve organic carbon; forest-agriculture landscape; nutrient loss; soil erosion; surface runoff[How to Cite: Hidayat Y, K Murtilaksono and N Sinukaban. 2012. Abstract

Effort to Increase Oil Palm Production through Application Technique of Soil and Water Conservation (K. Murtilaksono, W. Darmosarkoro, E.S. Sutarta, H. H. Siregar, and Y. Hidayat): The study was carried out at block 375, 415, and 414 (block 1, 2, and 3) Afdeling III, Mangement Unit of Rejosari, PT Perkebunan Nusantara VII, Lampung from June 2005 until December 2007.  Objective of the study is to examine the effect of soil and water conservation measurement, namely bund terrace and silt pit that are combined with retarded-water hole on production of oil palm. Sampled trees of each block were randomly selected as much as 36 trees.  Parameters of vegetative growth (additional new frond, total of frond, number of new bunch), production (number of bunch, fresh fruit bunch (TBS)), and average of bunch weigh (RBT) were observed and recorded every two weeks.  Production of palm oil of each block was also recorded every harvesting schedule of Afdeling.  Tabular data were analyzed descriptively by logical comparison among the blocks as result of application of bund terrace and silt pit.  Although the data of sampled trees were erratic, bund terrace and silt pit generally increasing number of frond, number of bunch, average of bunch weight, and fresh fruit bunch.  Bund terrace gived the highest production of TBS (25.2 t ha-1) compared to silt pit application (23.6 t ha-1), and it has better effect on TBS than block control (20.8 t ha-1).  Aside from that, RBT is the highest (21 kg) at bund terrace block compared to silt pit block (20 kg) and control block (19 kg).

Abstract

The soil aggregate stability index is one of the critical indicators of soil physical quality, primarily related to the soil's ability to absorb water into the soil and the soil's resistance to rainwater splashing and surface flow erosion in the soil erosion process. The study aimed to determine the soil aggregate stability index class criteria using the dry and wet sieving methods on the OSK 10701 sieve type and to identify the stability of soil aggregates on agricultural land, plantations, and forests around the IPB Dramaga campus. The transformation of the soil aggregate stability class criteria from the conventional sieve to the OSK 10701 sieve types gave excellent results with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.89. The soil aggregate stability index differs significantly between soil types and land uses. Podsolic Jasinga has a higher aggregate stability index than Podsolik Dramaga, Regosol Dramaga, and Latosol Dramaga in the upper layer (0-20 cm) and the lower layer (20-40 cm). Forests have a better aggregate stability index than conservation agricultural land, conventional agricultural land, rubber plantations, and oil palm plantations. The difference in stability index between land uses is closely related to soil organic matter contents. Although the soil is denser/more compact, the soil in oil palm and rubber plantations has a lower stability index and is classified as unstable.

Abstract

Soil quality is a determining factor for crop production. Therefore, proper assessment of soil quality—by integrating various soil characteristics into a Soil Quality Index (SQI)—is essential to reflect overall soil productivity. This study aimed to determine the SQI and its relationship to fruit crop productivity across seven locations with varying soil characteristics. The research was conducted at SMK PP Saree and SMKN Nisam in Aceh Province; SMKN Gelumbang and SMKN Banyuasin 3 in South Sumatra Province; SMKN Metro and SMKN Gedong Tataan in Lampung Province; and SMKN Kelapa in Bangka Belitung Province. The SQI analysis used eight key soil parameters considered critical for determining and managing crop growth and productivity, namely: effective soil depth, texture, bulk density, pH, organic matter content, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and base saturation. Each parameter was scored on a scale from 0 to 5. The results showed that the Soil Quality Index can effectively assess soil quality using these eight key parameters as a dataset. The studied soils were categorized as having medium to very good quality, with low organic carbon and low CEC identified as the most common limiting factors. Furthermore, the SQI demonstrated a strong positive correlation with fruit crop performance, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.832.

Abstract

Ciujung Watershed is an important land located in Banten Province, Indonesia. The Upstream Ciujung Watershed has seen numerous changes in land usage. Before implementing the best watershed management practices, we must first gather knowledge about the watershed's features. This report seeks to provide information about the characteristics of the Upstream Ciujung Watershed, covering land-use changes, hydrological responses, and water balance. Land use changes were analyzed using satellite imagery from 2016 and 2021, with changes traced using ArcGIS and Excel; hydrological response method for flow regime coefficient (FRC) and annual flow coefficient (AFC) in the 2012−2016 and 2017−2021 periods. Water balance was analyzed by calculating water demand in 2021 and availability water from 2012−2021. The study found that deforestation occurred between 2016 and 2021. Primary forest, secondary forest, and production forest area fell by 51 ha, 1,073 ha, and 3,119 ha, respectively, while dryland agricultural area increased with a mix of shrubs, plantations, and settlements, contributing to the alteration in the watershed. The FRC and AFC values from 2012 to 2016 were 49 (poor) and 0.32 (moderate). Meanwhile, the FRC and AFC for 2017–2021 were 60 (moderate) and 0.30 (moderate). The water balance of the Upstream Ciujung Watershed in 2021 indicates a water surplus of 663,739,545 m3/year, while the dry season in September shows a shortfall of −5,468,643 m3/month. Keywords: annual flow coefficient, flow regime coefficient, hydrological function, watershed management
