Abstract

Happiness (falah) constitutes the ultimate objective of Islamic economics, encompassing both material prosperity and spiritual well-being within the framework of Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah. However, conventional welfare indicators—such as GDP and income—remain limited in capturing the moral, psychological, and social dimensions of human well-being. This study aims to empirically examine the contribution of the five dimensions of Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah—preservation of religion (ḥifẓ al-dīn), intellect (ḥifẓ al-‘aql), life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), progeny (ḥifẓ al-nasl), and wealth (ḥifẓ al-māl)—to Indonesia’s National Happiness Index. Using balanced provincial panel data covering 34 provinces across three observation periods (2014, 2017, and 2021), this research applies a Fixed Effects panel regression model, selected based on Chow and Hausman tests, to estimate the impact of each dimension. The findings indicate that ḥifẓ al-nafs (proxied by labor force participation) and ḥifẓ al-nasl (life expectancy) exert statistically significant but negative effects on happiness. In contrast, ḥifẓ al-dīn (zakat), ḥifẓ al-‘aql (literacy rate), and ḥifẓ al-māl (GRDP per capita) show positive but statistically insignificant relationships. These results suggest the presence of non-material trade-offs, where increased economic participation and demographic improvements do not necessarily translate into higher subjective well-being. The study provides empirical support for the argument that national happiness cannot be adequately explained by economic growth alone. Instead, it requires a multidimensional framework that integrates spiritual, social, and ethical dimensions, as emphasized in Islamic welfare theory. This research contributes to the literature by bridging Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah with empirical happiness measurement and offers policy implications for designing more holistic and value-based development indicators in Muslim-majority contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of gold prices on the profitability of Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI), with a focus on its implications for social and economic issues within society. The research subjects include monthly gold price data from 2019 to 2023 and BSI’s financial reports for the same period. The study employs a quantitative approach using simple linear regression analysis with SPSS Version 23. The results reveal that gold prices significantly affect BSI's profitability, as measured by Return on Assets (ROA). The T-test indicates that from 2021 to 2023, fluctuations in gold prices have a significant impact on BSI’s profitability, with a T-value of 13.526 > T-table 1.67 and a significance value of 0.000 < 0.005. The coefficient of determination shows that gold prices account for 75.9% of the variation in BSI’s profitability. These findings highlight how gold price can influence Islamic banking products and impact investment decisions within the community. The results suggest the need for better risk management strategies by BSI to mitigate the effects of gold price volatility and address potential social and economic instability arising from asset price changes. This study provides valuable insights into how gold price can affect economic well-being and the stability of the Islamic banking sector.

Abstract

Maqashid sharia is the main reference for maintaining social balance in society which is the basic goal of Islamic sharia. The author presents in simple terms the maqashid al-shari'ah theory according to Ibn Assyria's view. Points that are considered important in this issue include the definition of maqasid al-shari'ah, its content, and its implementation of Islamic banking. The low level of service quality provided by Islamic banking has resulted in a decrease in the level of customer trust, especially towards Islamic banking. Therefore, the author wants to examine the aspects of service quality which includes tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and Empathy. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. Opinion of ibn Asyur which is considered in accordance with the Islamic Banking approach. Everything that contains the meaning of maintaining/maintaining the five maqasid al-shari'ah, is called mafsadah, rejecting/removing mafsadah means maslahah

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the preferences of the Medan City community in choosing sharia insurance by considering various factors, such as the level of religiosity, financial literacy, service quality, and socio-economic aspects. This study uses a qualitative approach with an in-depth interview method with five respondents from various professional and social backgrounds. The results of the study show that the community's understanding of sharia insurance is still diverse. Some people understand the concept of mutual cooperation (ta'awun), but many still have doubts regarding the transparency of fund management and the real benefits provided. The religiosity factor plays an important role in community decisions, but the low level of financial literacy is the main obstacle in understanding the benefits of sharia insurance. In addition, the affordability of premiums, ease of the claim process, and innovation in marketing also influence community preferences. The main challenges in increasing community participation include lack of education and socialization, negative stigma towards insurance, and the assumption that sharia insurance claims are more complicated than conventional insurance. To overcome these challenges, sharia insurance companies need to improve digital-based education, involve religious figures in socialization, and develop products that are more flexible and in accordance with the needs of various segments of society. With the right strategy, sharia insurance can be a more inclusive financial protection solution that is in accordance with sharia principles.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of understanding, religiosity, and culture on frugal living behavior among Generation Z in North Sumatra. The study addresses the increasing relevance of frugal living amid rising living costs, digital consumerism, and economic uncertainty. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of cognitive, religious, and socio-cultural dimensions to explain frugal living behavior within the context of Generation Z in North Sumatra. A quantitative approach with a causal associative design was employed. Data were collected from 100 respondents using purposive sampling and analyzed through multiple linear regression. The findings indicate that understanding, religiosity, and culture positively and significantly affect frugal living behavior, both partially and simultaneously. Culture was identified as the most dominant factor influencing frugal living practices. The model explains 65.5% of the variation in frugal living behavior. These findings imply that promoting sustainable financial behavior among Generation Z requires not only improving financial understanding but also strengthening religious values and cultural norms that encourage simplicity, self-control, and responsible consumption. This study contributes to the literature on behavioral economics and Islamic economics related to sustainable consumption behavior among young generations.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing trend of impulsive buying behavior among university students, driven by the development of TikTok features such as live streaming shopping and the FYP algorithm, which encourage spontaneous consumption. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of live streaming shopping and the FYP algorithm on impulsive buying and to examine the role of Islamic financial literacy as a moderating variable among FEBI UIN North Sumatra students. This research uses a quantitative approach with an associative method through questionnaires distributed to 103 respondents and analyzed using PLS-SEM. The results show that live streaming shopping and the FYP algorithm have a positive and significant effect on impulsive buying, while Islamic financial literacy has a negative and significant effect. However, Islamic financial literacy does not act as a moderating variable. In conclusion, although students possess Islamic financial literacy, the influence of TikTok features remains strong in driving impulsive purchasing behavior.

Abstract

The success of MSMEs in developing the sustainability-based halal fashion sector will largely depend on the implementation of effective strategies, as well as their ability to compete in the local and international markets. Sustainability in the context of halal fashion MSMEs involves several aspects, including the use of environmentally friendly materials, efficient management of natural and human resources, and attention to the social and economic welfare of workers. This study aims to analyze the development strategy of Sustainability-Based Halal Fashion Batik Style MSMEs. This study uses a qualitative motto by using the Nvivo application that supports searching for common words in data processing frequencies, displaying analysis in the form of tables and word frequencies that often appear based on the results of data coding. The results show that the words that appear most often are development, environment, society, growth, sustainable, meaning there is a relationship between these factors. The results of the study show that Langgam Batik develops its business based on three main pillars of sustainability, namely economic, social, and environmental. In terms of economy, product diversification and marketing with social media. From the social aspect, these MSMEs play a role in community empowerment through job creation and the preservation of cultural heritage through North Sumatran batik motifs. From an environmental perspective, there are opportunities to implement more environmentally friendly processes, such as the use of natural dyes that are less polluting. Therefore, support from the government, academics, and the business community is urgently needed to expand market reach and increase the competitiveness of halal fashion MSMEs at the national and international levels.
