Abstract

Dengen (Dillenia serrata) is a type of tree from the Dilleniaceae tribe which is widely distributed in Asia, including Indonesia. This tree is found in many areas of Indonesia, including Sulawesi. This tree grows in areas with an altitude of 80"“140 meters above sea level (asl) and is a perennial plant with a hardwood trunk texture The specific objective this research is to study the characteristic macroscopic and microscopic direction radial and vertical, including variations in fiber quality classes. This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Biology and Wood Preservation, Mulawarman University and the Faculty of Forestry, Tadulako University. The stages of this research include: a). Sampling, b). Observation of macroscopic characteristics, c). Observation of microscopic anatomical features, d). Preparation of maceration preparations and measurement of fiber dimensions. The macroscopic characteristics of dengen wood show: the core is dark brown-pale brown, the sapwood is not observed. The radius looks very conspicuous in the form of a dotted band image in the radial plane. Medium to rough texture, straight grain direction. The impression of touch is a bit rough with a slightly shiny color and is classified as a rather hardwood. Microscopic characteristics of dengen wood have vessels that are almost entirely solitary, diffuse axial parenchyma. Dengen wood has two types of rays lying and upright, multiseriate rays consisting of 3-6 cells. Its microscopic characteristics are vessel grouping and frequency, axial parenchyma type and the composition of the rays does not vary in the vertical and radial directions; while the vessel length, diameter, height and width of the rays and length and thickness of the fiber wall varied in the vertical and radial directions. The dengen Wood fiber belongs to Quality Class II.Keywords; Anatomy, fiber quality, radial, Vertical, Macroscopic and microscopic AbstrakDengen (Dillenia serrata) merupakan salah satu jenis pohon dari suku Dilleniaceae yang tersebar luas di kawasan Asia termasuk Indonesia. Abstract

Abstract: This article is a historical study that discusses the Existence of the Bajamba Eating Tradition in the Kurai Community of Bukittinggi City in 1984-2021. This article aims to explain how the survival of the tradition of eating bajamba in the Kurai community after the city of Bukittinggi became a tourist destination city and the strategies carried out by the Kurai community to maintain the tradition of eating bajamba, after the city of Bukittinggi was inhabited by immigrants from various ethnicities. This research uses a historical method consisting of four stages, namely heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this study show that the Kurai community still maintains the tradition of eating bajamba, because eating bajamba is a self-identity for the Kurai community, eating bajamba has existed and has been done since the past, in the implementation of eating bajamba it describes strong customs, closeness, and intimacy in the Kurai community. The community carries out various strategies to maintain the tradition of eating bajamba, by carrying out the tradition of eating bajamba at every Kurai traditional event, holding monthly meetings for the Bundo Kanduang, holding cultural festivals, and adding P5 activities for students to get to know the traditions that exist in their area. Abstract

Abstract: This article discusses the revitalisation of Kampung Cina in Bengkulu City (2016-2022) with a focus on the background, stages, and impacts of the revitalisation carried out by the government. The revitalisation of Kampung Cina was motivated by the government's awareness of the potential of Kampung Cina as a cultural and historical tourism destination and to welcome the Visit 2020 Wonderful Bengkulu program. The programme aims to increase tourist visits to Bengkulu because although Bengkulu's tourist attractions are many, the number of tourists who come is relatively small. The reason why this research is important is because the topic of research on Kampung Cina in Bengkulu city has not been studied in depth, even though the historical and cultural values contained can add to science. This research uses the historical method which has four steps, namely heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The main sources used are documents and interviews. The results of this study show that the government has several policies for Kampung Cina in Bengkulu. The revitalisation of Kampung Cina is divided into several stages namely; 1) physical revitalisation in the form of making sidewalks, installing street lights, and painting buildings. 2) economic rehabilitation, the government held a bazaar to improve the economy of the Kota Tuo community. 3) socialisation, the government communicated the revitalisation to the community. The revitalisation of Kampung Cina has a good impact on the economic, social, and tourism sectors despite the constraints of Covid-19. Abstract

Traditional markets are markets that are traditional in nature where sellers and buyers can bargain directly, buildings usually consist of stalls, outlets, stalls and open platforms opened by sellers and market managers. Pasar Rakyat is one of the markets in Kota Pariaman which is located on Jl. St. Syahrir No. Kelurahan, Kp. Perak, Kec. Central Pariaman, in 2019 the People's Market was built by the City Government without eliminating the history of the United Market. This study uses data sourced from primary data and secondary data. The data collection method uses interviews, observation and documentation with 81 people's market traders as informants. The data analysis method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The results of this study state that the government's policy towards relocation is good, but there is a decrease in the income of traders after being relocated due to the lack of visitors due to the large number of illegal traders selling in front of the market so that consumers are reluctant to enter the People's Market. Besides that, the small number of kiosks that were built meant that traders only sold a few of their wares, with the limit of asbestos stalls being easily broken and the lack of air ventilation so that the air was hot on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Keywords: People's Market, Market Relocation, Merchant Income

Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to analyze difficulties encountered by students of the English Education study program at Tadulako University in reading comprehension of literary works. A qualitative approach with a descriptive research design applied in this research. The samples were 98 students chosen randomly. Data were collected from existing documents, that is the results of pretest administered in the Reading for Literary Appreciation class. Results of data analysis showed that the students’ reading comprehension of the three genres of literary works – prose, poetry, and drama is low with percentage intervals of comprehension 18-37%. Eight difficulties encountered by the students in reading comprehension of literary works. They were vocabulary mastery, making inferences, recognizing the author’s opinion/bias, summarizing and paraphrasing, identifying figurative language, analyzing poetic or sound devices, evaluating author’s style, and analyzing the story elements. The findings provide information on students’ difficulties in reading comprehension of a variety of literary texts (prose, poetry and drama), which previous research have not yet investigated it. Therefore, teachers can design and apply strategies to help students improve their reading comprehension. Future researchers, furthermore, can find these findings resourceful to support their studies.   Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Literary Works, Reading for Literary Appreciation

Abstract

The ability to speak English is very important, but it will not be successful without being supported by the ability to listen to understand the verbal language. The poor listening skills of the English Education students at Tadulako University in the final exam of the Listening for General Communication course became the basis for conducting this study. The results of the test showed that around 80% students failed the course with percentage intervals of comprehension levels of 0-39%. Therefore, this study is carried out to specify if using Cognitive-Strategy Based Method and Metacognitive-Strategy Based Method is effective in improving the participants’ listening comprehension as well as to compare the effectiveness of the two strategies. This study applied experimental design involving 80 samples evenly distributed in two classes. One class was instructed using Cognitive strategy, while the other one was taught using Metacognitive strategy. Results of data analysis demonstrated that both the Cognitive and Metacognitive strategies effectively improve the participants’ listening comprehension. There is no significant difference in terms of the effectiveness of both strategies in improving listening skills of the participants. In practice, they support each other resulting in learners better listening comprehension.

Abstract

The ant species diversity in tropical Asia has been investigated in several locations, however, these studies mainly focused on well preserved forests or plantations. The ant fauna in urban parks has only been investigated in a limited number of locations in Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao, and Indonesia. We investigated the ant fauna in the Purwodadi Botanical Gardens, East Java, and compared it to the ant fauna obtained in the Bogor Botanical Gardens. In the Purwodadi Botanical Gardens, we employed the following sampling methods that were also carried out in Bogor: (1) visual searching of ants on tree trunks, (2) visual searching of litter and top-soil ants by hand sifting (3) visual searching of ant colonies, (4) visual searching of foraging workers. In total, 109 species in 44 genera from 9 subfamilies were collected. The number of species collected from litter and soil in Purwodadi was remarkably smaller than that in Bogor, while the ant species diversity on tree trunks was similar to that of Bogor. Of the109 species, 68 were common to Bogor. Arboreal ants were more similar than ground ants between Bogor and Purwodadi.
