Abstract

This research analyzes the denotation, connotation, and myth present in GoJek advertisements through the lens of Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology, the study interprets the imagery within the GoJek advertisement video. The analysis adheres to the data flow model by Miles and Huberman (1994), which encompasses data reduction, display, and conclusion formulation. The results indicate that the thumb serves as a central symbol in the GoJek advertisements. On a denotative level, it signifies physical actions like using a smartphone, wiping tears, counting money, and utilizing the GoJek application. On a connotative level, the thumb is linked to themes of empowerment, efficiency, social connectivity, and resilience. The research further uncovers various myths associated with the thumb symbol, including narratives about modernity, progress, individual potential, and the impact of small actions on communal well-being. By utilizing Barthes’ semiotic framework, this study emphasizes how GoJek advertisements leverage visual signs to convey persuasive messages that resonate with the intended audience within their cultural and social context.

Abstract

Literary works have always been influenced by mythological traditions, which offer a wealth of symbolism and thematic complexity. The research aims to analyse the novel's characters, themes, and symbols. With an emphasis on how the incorporation of mythological themes enriches the novel's moral and spiritual aspects, this research explores the function of literary tradition and mythology in C.S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The steps for collecting and analysing data are reading the novel, categorizing and identifying the characters, and then analyse them. The study identifies eleven mythological characters and analyse their symbolic roles. The characters are Mr. Tumnus, The White Witch, Ginnarbrik, Mr. and Mrs Beavers, Maugrim, Santa Claus, Aslan, Centaurs, Giants, Dryads and Naiads, and Werewolf. The benefit of the research is to provide a greater knowledge of how mythology continues to impact modern literature and our understanding of human nature by evaluating the ways in which Lewis creates the characters and shapes the plot by drawing on mythical traditions.

Abstract

This research analyzes the types of metaphors in Paul Laurence Dunbar’s ‘The Seedling’ using Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory. A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two different things. A metaphorical poem has the ability to create and translate the figurative language contained in the content of the poem, especially where there are deep personal and emotional experiences”." The research uses descriptive qualitative methods to obtain a clear and systematic description of the metaphors found in this poem. The findings show that there are three kinds of metaphors identified in the poem "The Seedling." Those are ontological, image scheme, and orientational. The metaphors used in Paul Laurence Dunbar's 'The Seedling' speak to the stages of human improvement, utilizing characteristic pictures such as seeds, roots, daylight, and rain. Each allegory is utilized to portray desires, dreams, trusts, and the plausibility of developing into a grown up in spite of having to overcome numerous challenges. Understanding the meaning and function of metaphors will broaden our conception of language as a learning medium with strong implications for language and literacy teaching.

Abstract

The management of personal finances among youth has become increasingly important due to changes in contemporary lifestyles. This study thoroughly examines the influences of a hedonism lifestyle, frugal living, and family financial education on personal financial management, with financial literacy serving as a moderating variable among Generation Z students at public universities in Malang City. Through the application of a quantitative methodology, data were amassed via the distribution of questionnaires to the collegiate populace. The data scrutiny was executed employing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via SmartPLS version 4 on a sample of 135 participants. The results indicate that a hedonism lifestyle exerts a negative yet statistically insignificant influence on personal financial management, whereas frugal living and family financial education demonstrate a significant positive impact. Financial literacy fails to function as an effective moderator in the relationships between hedonism lifestyle, frugal living, and family financial education concerning personal financial management. These findings highlight the imperative for the formulation of more comprehensive financial education programs aimed at empowering students to enhance their financial management proficiencies.

Abstract

The accumulation of organic waste in Indonesia is dominated by household waste, namely food waste and is also produced from household industries such as tempeh processing, namely soybean husk waste. One of the best solutions that can be done to minimize the accumulation of organic waste is to use Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae. The organic waste will be consumed by BSF larvae and converted into nutrients for larval growth and development. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of a combination of soybean husk waste and food waste on the growth and productivity of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae. This study is an experimental study of Complete Random Design (RAL) using 5 treatments, and 4 replicates, namely P1 (100% soybean husk waste), P2 (50% soybean husk waste + 50% food waste waste), P3 (75% soybean husk waste + 25% food waste waste), P4 (25% soybean husk waste + 75% food waste waste), P5 (100% food waste waste). The main parameters discussed in this study are larval growth including weight and length and larval productivity in the form of protein levels. The supporting parameters discussed are the Survival Rate and Waste Reduction Index values. Data analysis uses normality test, homogeneity test, ANOVA, and Duncan test at a confidence interval of 95%. The results showed that the combination of soybean husk waste and food waste had a significant effect (P<0.05) on larval growth and productivity. The best combination treatment that contributed to the development (length and weight) of BSF larvae was in the P3 treatment with the highest yields of 1.38cm and 0.17g respectively. In addition, the Survival Rate, Waste Reduction Index, and larval protein levels were the highest in the P1 treatment at 100%, 4.82%, and 13.07%, respectively.
