Abstract

This study analyses the character development of the main character, Queen Elizabeth I, in the film Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) using a Feminist Existential approach. The study aims to examine how Elizabeth’s character evolves as a woman and a ruler amid political pressure, gender constraints, and personal sacrifice within a patriarchal society. Feminist existentialism, particularly drawing on the ideas of Simone de Beauvoir, is employed to explore themes of freedom, choice, responsibility, and self-definition as reflected in Elizabeth’s actions and decisions. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive method, with the film serving as the primary data source. Data are collected through close observation of dialogues, scenes, character interactions, and cinematic elements that reveal Elizabeth’s psychological and ideological development. The analysis focuses on how Elizabeth negotiates her identity between her role as a woman and her position as a monarch, and how she asserts her autonomy despite societal expectations. The findings indicated that the character development of Elizabeth's are; 1) possessing a highly protective spirit, 2) becoming an Intellectual, 3) have self-confidence, 4) responsible, 5) possesses courage, and 6) caring for fellow women. This study contributes to feminist film studies by highlighting the representation of female agency and existential freedom in historical cinema, and it offers insight into how film narratives can reflect women’s struggles for self-determination and leadership.

Abstract

This study employs a literature review method to analyze post-disaster election crises—often characterized by incumbent victories and shifts in power—through the lenses of leftist and liberal theory. The findings reveal that the leftist approach (Gramsci, Marx, Arendt) highlights the state's vulnerability, while the liberal approach critiques this perspective. This paper proposes the concept of a “third way” that emphasizes social-democratic cohesion to bridge the theoretical divide. This paper finds that the leftist approach—rooted in the thought of Gramsci, Marx, and Arendt—is highly valuable for understanding the relationship between state power and other scholarly studies. The leftist approach views the election crisis not merely as a neutral exercise of state power serving the people’s interests, but as a process that is also vulnerable to resistance against the state. However, this paper acknowledges that the power debate regarding the electoral crisis, as framed through the leftist paradigm, still has weaknesses. The leftist approach has consistently maintained that the state’s role as an oppressor is a weak one. Consequently, various criticisms have emerged from liberals, particularly regarding the understanding of the electoral crisis in the context of natural disasters. Beyond the polar divide between left and right in understanding the concept of the electoral crisis in the context of disasters, there is not only a relationship of class power dynamics but also a strong interdependence between society and democracy. Cohesion is the key concept in understanding the electoral crisis in the context of a disaster by juxtaposing the left and right approaches.

Abstract

This research is based on low learning outcomes in Social Sciences (IPS) subjects, the reason is that students' interest in the learning process is still not optimal, besides that the learning model applied in class is limited to the lecture method with learning resources that only rely on textbooks. Apart from that, teachers do not provide examples of material that is relevant to real problems, and students are also less active in learning activities. The aim of this research is to improve the learning outcomes and activities of class VII G students on demand, supply and price material at SMPN 36 Surabaya. In the design research used is classroom action research which is carried out in 2 cycles, each cycle consisting of four stages, including planning, action, observation and reflection. This research uses a quantitative analysis method using descriptive analysis techniques. Data was collected using formative tests. The implementation of pre-cycle learning, showing an average value of 68%, then increased to 79% in cycle 1 and 88% in cycle 2. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model with the help of Wordwall media increases learning outcomes of class VII G students at SMPN 36 Surabaya.
