Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the role of adoption of oil palm cultivation technology that has been recommended by the government (RI Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture No 131 / Permentan / OT.140 / 12/2013 concerning Guidelines for Good Oil Palm Cultivation) on production efficiency from smallholder plantations on the dependent smallholder and independent smallholder in Riau and West Kalimantan. Specifically, this study is: (1) to analyze the factors that influence the level of production and analyze the technical efficiency of smallholder oil palm in Riau and West Kalimantan, (2) to analyze the effect of intensity of technology adoption on productivity and efficiency of smallholder oil palm production in Riau and West Kalimantan, (3) To identify the factors affecting technical inefficiency in smallholder plantations in Riau and West Kalimantan. The research objectives were analyzed by using a stochastic frontier model to estimate productivity, the level of technical efficiency, and producer inefficiency simultaneously with allocative efficiency and economic efficiency. The results showed that smallholder oil palm farmers who adopt all recommended technologies compared to farmers who adopt not all recommended technologies had higher production efficiency. Analysis of technical efficiency showed that farmers in the dependent smallholder were more technically efficient than independent smallholders. Farmers who adopt more technology and had more experience, had higher efficiency than others. Farmers who were often associated with extension workers and more experience had higher efficiency than others. Abstract

The palm oil industry is one of the agricultural, industrial sectors with a strategic role in the national economy, especially in Indonesia. Although this industry has a high contribution in Indonesia, the oil palm plantation companies have not shown satisfactory performance. Internal firm conditions and macroeconomic variables may influence the performance of oil palm plantation companies. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the firm performance determinants and efficiency of oil palm companies in Indonesia. The samples in this research are 12 oil palm companies listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) for the 2014-2019 periods. The panel regression analysis and the Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation (PROMETHEE) are applied in this study. The first result in the panel regression shows that the firm size, exchange rate, and world CPO price affect ROA as the operational performance. Moreover, liquidity, leverage, and inflation do not affect ROA as operational performance. The second result in panel regression shows that inflation, exchange rate, and CPO World Price affect PER as the market performance. However, market performance is not affected by liquidity, leverage, and firm size. The efficiency analysis shows that the firm ranking tends to fluctuate in the observation period. This analysis defines that the oil palm plantation companies in Indonesia, on average, have a similar performance. Abstract

The European Union is one of the main export destinations for Indonesian palm oil. However, this area requires the sustainable development of palm oil products. Four countries from the European Union region are consistently export destinations for palm oil: Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Spain. RSPO exists as one of the institutions that ensure sustainable development in palm oil production. This study aims to analyze whether there were differences before and after implementation of RSPO in export market share and the competitiveness of CPO and RPO exports to the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and Spain. The analysis was carried out during 1995-2020 using the paired sample t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The analysis results show that there are differences in the export market share and competitiveness of Indonesian CPO exports to the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Germany. The same finding was also found in RPO, especially in Indonesia's export market share. However, there is no difference in the export market share and competitiveness of Indonesian RPO exports to the Netherlands before and after implementing the RSPO in 2008. Abstract

The development of digital technology and a pandemic have increased online transactions on digital platforms. The most widely used digital platforms for online transactions in Indonesia are Shopee, Tokopedia, and Bukalapak. Digital platforms will become essential actors in the agribusiness system in the future. Fresh agricultural products marketed on digital platforms are included in the fruit and vegetable category. This research aims to analyze the factors that influence the total sales of fruits and vegetables on the digital platforms. The method used in this research is panel data regression. The results show that the effect is positive and negative based on types of products. The number of reviews through digital platforms influences significantly on total fruit and vegetable sales. However, the price does not influence significantly on total sales. Meanwhile, other factors include rating, store type, and promotion provide results of varying significance by commodity. Because review is the most important factor that affect total sales in digital platforms, seller needs to focus on how to control reviews in each digital platform. The understanding can help the seller to increase their total sales. Keywords: digital farmer, e-commerce, marketing, marketplace, robust least squares

Abstract

Crop-livestock integration is a future agricultural system that can increase the added value of farming while and being environmentally friendly. However, it is not widely used by oil palm farmers. Oil palm integration with cattle is expected to meet the demand for oil palm organic fertilizer and utilize palm fronds as animal feed. The objective of this research is to analyse the factors that influence farmers’ decisions to implementing oil palm-cattle integration. A survey was conducted with 300 respondent who were chosen with purposive sampling with two categories: integrated farming and non-integrated farming. The logistic model was used to analyze adoption factors. The result shows that factors influencing the decision of farmers to adopt oil palm-cattle integration are the time of involvement of household head in farming, extension services, income from oil palm, and the household’s dependent ratio. Meanwhile, the factors that do not encourage farmers to adopt oil palm-cattle integration are formal education and involvement in farmer groups. The results observed several socio-economic factors that can lead to the increase of the crop-livestock integration such as farmers still requiring good extension and training. Abstract

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, trailing only China, India, and the United States, with a population of 276,361,788 people. Efforts to fulfill the demand for rice as a staple food are concerning. The policies established by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Trade do not match. The Ministry of Agriculture carries out a pro-rice production policy. The Ministry of Trade carries out a pro-rice import policy. This study included both descriptive and quantitative analysis. The type of data used in this research is annual time series secondary data with a research period from 1980 to 2020. The model used in this study was developed using the Two Stage Least Squares (2SLS) approach. The results showed that the Ministry of Agriculture's goal was to boost output, but this might lead to overstock and consequently reduce rice prices, according to the Ministry of Trade. The Ministry of Trade's rice import policy has always been withheld by the Ministry of Agriculture because, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, imports will lower the rice price, reducing farmers' income. This shows that production and trade policies are not well-suited. Production policies, with an average annual increase of 2%, outperform trade policies, with an average annual increase of 141%. Abstract

Palm oil is one of the agricultural commodities grown in world trade. North America is one of the regions with high import demand, so that the region can be observed as an export destination. This study aimed to examine the palm import demand in three selected North American Countries (United States of America (USA), Canada and Mexico) and its determinants. Autoregressive Distributive Lags (ARDL) was applied in this study between 1990 and 2017. The results indicate that the demand for palm oil in North American countries has increased. However, the import growth and shares have fluctuated relatively. GDP, GDP Indonesia, GDP Malaysia world palm oil prices, soybean oil prices, and biodiesel production significantly affect palm oil imports in the USA in the long and short-run. The GDP and GDP of Indonesia are the factors that influence palm oil import in Canada and Mexico in the long run. However, we found the impact of GDP Malaysia and GDP Indonesia in Canada in the short-run. Moreover, Indonesia's GDP and GDP significantly influenced palm oil import in Mexico. This research implies that oil palm exporting countries need to consider these factors, especially GDP, before expanding their market to North American countries as one of the biggest palm oil markets in the global world. Abstract

The attack levels of plant pest organisms (PPO) highly influence the productivity of paddy rice farming. With the increasing human awareness of the dangers of using pesticides, especially for the environment and human health, PPO control prioritizes preventive control by applying the principles of integrative pest management (IPM), which prioritizes the application of healthy crop cultivation, routine observation, utilization of natural enemies and farmers as IPM experts. The use of inputs by farmers in production activities can affect the resulting production. This study aimed to estimate the effect of input management, IPM, and non-IPM on paddy rice production. The analysis used in this study was the Cobb-Douglas production function with the multiple linear regression method. Partially, each variable of land area, seeds, inorganic fertilizers, and dummy variables of IPM or non-IPM farmers significantly affected paddy rice production in Kampar Subdistrict. Variables of organic fertilizers, natural pesticides interacted with frequency, chemical pesticides interacted with frequency, and labor partially had no significant effect on lowland paddy rice production in Kampar Subdistrict. It is necessary to re-enact counseling on IPM in Kampar Subdistrict, Kampar District, to apply IPM principles that prioritize preventive PPO control to avoid the dangers of using pesticides for the environment and human welfare.
