Abstract

The pandemic Covid-19 has made the world face one of the greatest challenges we have ever experienced over a century. Every sector (health industry, education, aviation, navigation, agriculture, media) is confronting such potential catastrophe that all are struggling to survive in this new normal. Due to these unavoidable trying times, there is a paradigm shift, a transition in every sphere. The education fraternity is considered the platform to build up the future generation is suffering the most because of the campus closure where other sectors are allowed to continue their activities so far. It has gone through several transformations from (traditional way of online teaching) to cope up with the situation and still struggling to reach up its goal. There was a chance for loss of the academic year if there was no online education, no transition from the traditional way of the teaching-learning process. This paper is an attempt to focus on the transition of the English teaching-learning process for the continuation of academic performances, the features of online English education, the types of online English education, the role of English teachers in this regard, strategies to make an effective online English class, challenges that we are encountering and some recommendations that are needed for the continuation of English teaching-learning performance during future trying times like epidemic, pandemic, war and so on.

Abstract

In the context of higher education, IT’s popularity and transparency has increased students’ higher awareness of writing in different evolving forms. It is undeniable that publishing scientific research is now seen more as success determinant in academic careers. Along with this demand, students need to deepen their advanced literacy and academic language skills to achieve good scientific writing. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of Systemic Functional Genre approach in students’ reading literacy. A quantitative method of quasi-experimental design was carried out in this study. There were two groups involved: the experimental group (EG) and the control group (CG). During the implementation, both groups experienced in the different treatments. The population selected in this study was the second-semester learners of English Department, Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta. In selecting the sample, the researchers purposively choose two groups (n=60 students). To collect the data, the researchers implemented a reading test. Based on the research finding, the study indicated that the SFG-based Approach had a significant positive impact on improving the students’ reading literacy.

Abstract

This research aimed to improve the students’ speaking skill in English lesson by puppets games. This research was conducted by using Quasi-Experimental. The subject of this research was Class X MIPA of SMA Perjuangan Depok 2018/2019 academic year, which consisted of 29 students. The objective of this research was to teaching students’ speaking skill in English Lesson by using Puppets Games at Ten Grade of SMA Perjuangan Depok. The data were gathered through quantitative and qualitative data. The result of this research showed that there was increasing of students in speaking skill. The mean of pre-test was 58.34. The mean of post-test was 77. Based on the result analysis, it can be concluded that there was a significance using puppets games in teaching speaking at tenth grade senior high school. The result showed that the result of T-test calculation is 13.090 more higher than T-table 5%, it gained score 2.045. Therefore, it can be conclude that teaching speaking using puppets games is effective to improve speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMA Perjuangan Depok. The results of this study are expected to be useful to related parties such as principals, teachers, parents, students and further researchers.

Abstract

Language learning activities are required for all students of the Faculty of Education at Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta. So far, the learning process in the classroom has been carried out conventionally. Lecturers come to class, deliver lessons, and assign homework to students. Teaching and learning activities are routine activities that frequently bore students and make them uninterested in taking the class. Students' boredom requires an alternative learning process that does not adhere to conventional concepts but has adopted novelty by using free applications that can be downloaded on each student's smartphone. Google Classroom, an online learning system that allows lecturers and students to carry out the learning process wherever and whenever they want, is one solution that can be provided. It is expected that students' English learning will improve as a result of their use of Google Classroom. As a result, it offers a variety of new learning opportunities and can accommodate students' preferences. The use of Google Classrooms is also consistent with the rapid development of technology, which is supported by the slogan of the Industrial Revolution era 4.0. It has also touched the 5.0 era, which leads to the use of technology products that can be used in the classroom learning process and supports the new minister of education's policies regarding freedom of learning.

Abstract

One of the learning models that can be implemented in increasing the students ability in English language is using Problem Based Learning (PBL). Problem Based Learning is a learning model that focuses on giving the solution for students in learning process. PBL provides the chance for students to find their problem and also creating the alternative solution to deal with their problems in English language learning. The aims of this study, by using PBL can increase the students’ ability in mastering English language. The participant of this study chosen from primary school teacher education department (PGSD) faculty of educational sciences, Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta. There several consideration in choosing the department as the object of this study. First, the student of this department lack of interest in joining the English subject, the learning process becomes ineffective. Second, as the future candidate of teacher for elementary school students, they need to concern with the ability of English language. Third, the average ability of students in mastering English is weak. The method used for this study based on qualitative/interpretive paradigm. This method concern on viewing the focus and problems of this study in a comprehensive way. The finding, based on the result of the study it can be shown that the students ability in English language increased as the researcher targeted from the beginning. And the learning process becomes more active after the use of Problem Based Learning. So, it can be concluded that the use of Problem Based Learning (PBL) can increase the students’ ability in mastering English Language.

Abstract

The present study aimed to determine the efficacy of students' vocabulary mastery by Charade Game. This research has used 8th students of SMPN 18 KOTA TANGERANG SELATAN as a sample population. There had been 30 students throughout this group. The researchers used a simple cluster sampling technique to select the sample. The method of this study was quantitative and a quasi-experimental design of the pre-test and post-test. The data used for this study were gathered through pre-test and post-test vocabulary. Pre-test and post-test data then were analyzed numerically via SPSS19. The findings of this research clarified that the student pre-test score was 57 but then after treatment, the student post-test score was 81.83. The findings also indicate that the tobtained value was 15.79 and the tcritical value was 0.05. These findings mean that Charade Game was likely to succeed in mastering vocabulary.

Abstract

The study aimed to find out whether fly swatter game can give influence toward students’ vocabulary mastery. The subject of this study was grade VII-2 of SMPN 9 Tangerang Selatan in the academic year of 2018/2019, which consisted of 42 students. The method used in this study is a quantitative method with the design of the pre-experimental study. The data from pre-test and post-test were analyzed statistically using spss 16. The result of this study showed; the students’ pre-test mean score was 45.4 and the students’ post-test mean score was 86.6. The result of t-test was 21.55 and significant (2-tailed) was 0.00 < p (0.05). The hypothesis (H1) was accepted, which means there is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group. It can be concluded that applying fly swatter game in teaching vocabulary to 7th grade students of SMPN 9 Tangerang Selatan is effective.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness to use Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Questionnaire as a tool that adapted in Speaking skills from first-year until a fourth-year grade of Thai students in TSAI. This study used a Quantitative Method with Survey research by implementing the design of an online questionnaire. In this study, the participants are all Thai students, the Faculty of Education in TSAI who have been studying in Jakarta and west Jawa with 46 Participants. The data were collected by giving Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Questionnaire as the instruments. The result of significant scores of Thai students after examined the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Questionnaire is x 3 556 within the high-anxiety level, it can be said that there are major factors that affecting speaking anxiety during English oral presentation skills of Thai students, the Faculty of Education in TSAI.

Abstract

The current study investigates the impact of multiple intelligences-based Instructions on developing speaking skills of the students of English. Therefore, the problem of the current study can be stated in the lack of speaking skills of the students of English school in Junior High School, MTs Al-Ihsan Jakarta Barat. To confront this problem, the researcher developed a multiple intelligences-based program to enhance the speaking skills paying due attention to the individual differences among students. The sample of the study consisted of sixty fourth-year perspective students of English. The Quasi-experimental research design was used in the study as the researcher used the one group post-test to assess the usefulness of using this approach. Results of the study proved the effectiveness of Multiple Intelligences-(MI) On Developing Speaking Skills of the 9th Grade Students’ of MTs Al-Ihsan Jakarta Barat.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to prove that using a web-based music study is effective in boosting active listening. This research conducted in Private Elementary School Khalifa IMS Tangerang Selatan. The population of this research is third-grade students, and the sample is P3C consists of 25 students. The method of this research is quantitative method and using pre-experimental design. To collect the data, the writer used a pre-test, and post-test that given to the students. The resulting score of the data indicated that, the total score of students in the pre-test was 1338 with the average were 53.52. The lowest score of the pre-test was 37 and the highest score was 60. The total score of students in the post-test was 2211 with the average were 88.44. The lowest score of the post-test was 80 and the highest score was 97. It is significantly different from the result of pre-test and post-test scores. The results of the pre-test and post-test were calculated by using manual statistically. The calculation indicated that t – observe were 4.79 with t – tables were 1.70 and the significance 0.05. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. The writer concluded that using Web-based music studies in teaching English was effective to improve students’ listening skills.
